Bill makes a good case for the idea that the thing most likely to change professional football is not the current controversies about player behavior, or even the issue of concussions. The most likely change agent is the transformation of the broadcast television business (and, more and more, the broadcast Internet business).

UPDATE: Vikings Bar Peterson From Team Activities

This slimy week has gotten even slimier.

Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has been in Montgomery County, Texas, for reckless or negligent injury to a child.

NFL.com reporter Ian Rapoport reports that the indictment "stems from the disciplining of a son with a switch." He says the investigation has been going on for some time, and that Peterson testified before a grand jury weeks ago.

SNF: Finding Soft Spots in Bears, 49ers Defenses

My latest column for NBC Sports, taking a look at the Bears and 49ers run defenses and how you can run up the middle on both of them. Stat from this piece I wouldn't have guessed: the 49ers were 31st in Stuff Rate on runs marked Mid/Guard last year, ahead of only the Jaguars.

Quinn Signs Long-Term Deal with Rams

Adam Schefter is reporting that the St. Louis Rams have signed defensive end Robert Quinn to a four-year extension worth up to $66 million, with $41 million guaranteed. The deal will keep Quinn in St. Louis through 2019.

Quinn, the Rams' first-round pick in 2011 out of North Carolina, was a first-team All-Pro last year, ranking second in the league with 19 sacks. In Football Outsiders' stats, he had 33 Defeats, tied with Indianapolis' Robert Mathis for seventh in the league. Among linemen, only the incomparable J.J. Watt (35) had more.

Josh Gordon Suspension Cut to 10 Games

Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon, originally suspended for the entire 2014 season, will have his suspension cut to 10 games. That means he will be eligible to play on November 23 against Atlanta, plus the Browns' final five games against the Bills, Colts, Bengals, Panthers, and Ravens.
