NFL Moves Touchbacks to the 25

So, the NFL has decided to move a touchback after a kickoff to the 25 instead of the 20. This is another move designed to reduce kickoff returns in an attempt to reduce injuries... and it is going to totally backfire. That five-yard move creates a huge incentive for squibs and pop-up kicks and other plays designed to force the return team to take the ball back from inside the 20. It also changes the math to make surprise onside kicks a better value; a failed onside now gives the other team five fewer yards.

NFL Bans All Chop Blocks

The biggest rule change approved at the NFL owners' meetings: the chop block (an offensive lineman blocking a defender below the waist when that defender is already engaged with another blocker) is now illegal in all situations. Previously the block had been legal in specific situations (outlined in this Deadspin article), but it will now be illegal in all scenarios, all over the field.

Bears Deal Martellus Bennett to Patriots

Time for the Patriots to take another chance on a disgruntled player. The Bears have been trying to send Martellus Bennett elsewhere for over a year now, and finally found a trading partner. They'll deal Bennett to the Patriots along with a sixth-round pick, and get a fourth-rounder in return. Bennett could finally allow the Patriots to really feature their two-tight end sets for the first time since Aaron Hernandez was cut, or he could spend the entire season complaining that he's behind Rob Gronkowski for targets.

NFL Teams Prepping For RFID Data Dump

For two years now, the NFL and Zebra Technologies have been monitoring the real-time position and movement of all players via microchips in the shoulder pads. So far all we've gotten out of that is "Next Gen Stats" that show us a player's top speed during a play or similar data that seems impressive, but not terribly useful.

Pats Trade Chandler Jones to Cardinals

Per Adam Schefter on Twitter, the New England Patriots have traded defensive end Chandler Jones to the Arizona Cardinals in exchange for guard Jonathan Cooper and a second-round draft pick.

Jones is entering the final year of his current contract. The 2012 first-round pick had a career-high 12.5 sacks last year and 36.0 in four seasons in New England.

Martavis Bryant Suspended For 2016

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Martavis Bryant has been suspended without pay for a minimum of one year for violating the league's substance-abuse policy.

NFL Penalizes Kansas City Two Picks for Tampering

I forgot to post this story for discussion when the penalty was first announced, but the NFL announced it is taking away Kansas City's 2016 third-round pick and 2017 sixth-round pick as punishment for tampering with Jeremy Maclin during the 2015 offseason. That's right, the Kansas City Chiefs are CHEATERS!... for doing something that's against the rules but every team in the NFL does and we all know it. Apparently, Andy Reid spoke to Maclin during the "legal tampering period" when team officials are only supposed to be contacting agents, but not the players themselves.

Eagles Trade Away Alonso, Maxwell, Murray

Monday's start to the legal tampering period produced a lot of noise and some actual news: Howie Roseman took a look at some of what Chip Kelly did in his brief tenure as the Eagles' head personnel man, and decided those weren't players that he wanted to keep. Linebacker Kiko Alonso and cornerback Byron Maxwell went first, to the Miami Dolphins. Later in the day, Adam Schefter broke the big deal, DeMarco Murray to the Tennessee Titans. Neither deal can officially be completed before the new League Year begins on Wednesday.
