Johnathan Franklin's Career is Over

This isn't a hugely important player loss, but it is a sad one. While Eddie Lacy is on the precipice of stardom, the other running back Green Bay drafted last year, Johnathan Franklin, will probably never play again due to a neck injury sustained during a kickoff last year in Week 12. The Packers will be giving him a waived/injured designation, and in a tweet today Franklin indicated that he needs to move to the next phase of his life. I hope he invested his rookie salary well.

Patent Office Cancels Redskins Trademark Registration

The United States Patent and Trademark Office has canceled the Washington Redskins trademark registration, calling the football team’s name "disparaging to Native Americans." It was a case filed by five Native Americans. This will limit the team's options regarding merchandising. Now that we're talking money, maybe we can finally get Dan Snyder to change the damn thing.

Chuck Noll Passes Away

The legendary Steelers head coach passed away Friday at 82. Noll, who turned around a Pittsburgh franchise that had been pathetic for virtually its entire history until his hiring in 1969, is the only head coach to win four Super Bowls. He had a career record of 193-148-1 in the regular season. RIP, and condolences to his family and friends.

Mandatory Monday: Front Seven Ratings

Lots of FO analysis weaved into these ratings. After years working here in various capacities, I still discover new things hidden right under my nose, in plain sight. The defensive DVOA ratings against running backs and tight ends makes a fascinating indicator of the "shape" of a front seven's performance: maybe they are forcing tight ends and backs to block all the time, or covering them well, or abandoning too much in the name of pass rush (the Browns), leaving the screen and hot read game wide open.
