Here's a good piece from SB Nation about our current No. 1 favorite underrated NFL player, Tampa Bay linebacker Lavonte David. The Miami high school product dreamed of playing for the U, but ended up following a winding road through community college and Nebraska to a home on Florida's other coast.

We'll just quote this Tweet from @AroundTheNFL verbatim: "Bills DT Marcell Dareus suspended first game of the 2015 season for violating the NFL Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse." This is concerning an arrest in 2014. The Bills will host the Colts in Week 1 without their defensive tackle.
Dareus has released an apologetic statement through the team's PR account.

The NFL owners today officially voted to move the line of scrimmage for extra points back to the 15, making the XP now equivalent to a 33-yard field goal. The line of scrimmage remains the 2 for the 2-point conversion. In addition, returning a blocked kick, fumble, or interception on a point-after try will now be worth two points for the defense.
I hate this rule change so much. Why do we need to make the point-after try complicated? If you want to increase excitement, just move the line of scrimmage to the 1 to encourage going for 2-point conversions.

Hey folks, Tanier here! With DeflateGate slowly eroding my sanity, I jumped at the chance Bleacher Report gave me to tell the story of the Providence Steam Roller. It was meant to just be an oddball feature about 1920s football, but I found some fun parallels with the current state of NFL football in New England.
Take the time to link and share this one. If we get lots of "reader engagement," B/R will let me write more stuff about old-timey football.

Justin Smith is officially retiring, which everyone pretty much expected anyway. I prefer players announcing their retirement right after their actual final season more than this recently popular practice of sitting around a couple years hoping you get one last contract, then signing a one-day deal with the team you are most identified with just so you can retire.

The Miami Dolphins have signed Ryan Tannehill to a contract extension that will keep the quarterback in Miami through 2020. Adam Schefter reports that the deal is for $96 million, including $45 million guaranteed.
Tannehill's passing DVOA in his first three seasons: -9.9%, -9.8%, and then 4.1% in 2014.

In case you were wondering how the Green Bay Packers ended up as an a cappella group in the new movie Pitch Perfect 2, it's apparently all David Bakhtiari's doing.

The third overall pick in this year's draft tore his ACL in his first-ever NFL practice and is done for the season. Man, fate just hates Jacksonville.

It's not sports-related, but we wanted to let all our readers know about the new book from sometime FO writer Robert Weintraub: "No Better Friend: One Man, One Dog, and Their Extraordinary Story of Courage and Survival in WWII."
What did the Vikings quarterback do well in his rookie season, and how high is his ceiling?
