Monday Morning Digest: Cowboys in Crisis Mode, Patriots in Peak Form

In this week's Digest ...

  • The Patriots give Tom Brady a special teams boost.
  • The Saints treat the Bills the way a garbage disposal treats a moldy meatball.
  • The Jaguars try to cough up a big game in the fourth quarter but cannot out-choke the Chargers.
  • The Steelers limbo even lower than usual to play down to another opponent.
  • Another fluky touchback robs the Bears and the NFL of a little bit more fun and fairness.
  • Strip-Sack Savage rides again for the Texans
  • ...and much more.

The Kids Are Alright

Good post here on the Eagles blog "McNabb or Kolb," showing that quarterback performance in the second year seems to predict a player's career a lot better than performance as a rookie. That's very good news for fans of Carson Wentz or Jared Goff.

Ezekiel Elliott Suspension is ON, Again

A three-judge panel from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit denied Ezekiel Elliott‘s motion for an injunction blocking his suspension. It will start this Sunday against Atlanta, going through Week 15. Probably. This thing has changed so many times, I have whiplash.

As first reported by NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Deshaun Watson suffered a torn ACL on a non-contact drill in practice today, ending one of the best stories of the 2017 NFL season and one of the most exciting rookie campaigns on record. This sucks.

Dolphins Trade Ajayi to Eagles

We almost overlooked this with all the other insanity going on at the trade deadline, but the Miami Dolphins have traded running back Jay Ajayi to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for a 2018 fourth-round draft pick.

On Thursday night against Baltimore, Ajayi gained 21 yards on his first carry, then 2 yards on his other 13 carries. Dolphins coach Adam Gase had harsh words after the game: "We've got to stop trying to hit home runs all the time. It's on the running back. Do your job. It's not hard to do."

Panthers Trade Kelvin Benjamin to Bills

The Carolina Panthers have traded wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin to the Buffalo Bills in exchange for third- and seventh-round picks in next year's draft.

The trade fills an obvious need for Buffalo, who find themselves in the thick of the playoff chase at 5-2 despite one of the NFL's worst depth chart at wide receiver. Running back LeSean McCoy leads the team in targets and receptions. Second-round rookie Zay Jones is second on the team with 37 targets, but has only caught 10 of those passes.
