Chilling Start to Cutler Era

Huh. Maybe this whole Jay Cutler thing wasn't such a good idea. Is it too late to start the "Un-bench Jake Plummer!" talk?

No Rematch: Florida to Meet Ohio State for BCS Title

Consider this a place to discuss the BCS matchups, and the decision of Florida over Michigan, until Confessions goes up Monday evening. Other than Florida-Ohio State, here are your matchups: USC-Michigan in an old school Rose Bowl, Wake Forest-Louisville in the Orange Bowl, Notre Dame-LSU in the Sugar Bowl, and Oklahoma-Boise State in the Tostitos This Is Not The Championship Just The Plain Old Fiesta Bowl. Link to Pete Fiutak's analysis.

Giants Sign Sean Landeta

Sean-freaking-Landeta has been allowed a weekend pass from the retirement home to punt for the Giants this weekend in the case that Jeff Feagles is unavailable. Of course, Jeff Feagles is only four years younger than Landeta himself. Not only is Landeta one of my favorite NFL players of all time (even when he made the move to Philadelphia), but he's the NFL's last link to the original Tecmo Bowl.

NFL Network Draws Intense Fan Reactions

This Washington Examiner article is a few days old but I wanted to link to it to point out one thing: maybe it was the beer, or the fact that my team's out of the playoff picture so I had no vested interest in the game, but I thought Bryant Gumbel and Chris Collinsworth were miles better than any other NFL broadcasting crew. During last night's Ravens-Bengals telecast there wasn't any yelling, no dopey mid-game interviews with celebrities, no sideline reporters and no graphics that obscured the action while conveying no useful information.

Facts Tame Lions

New England fans know that Bill Belichick will go out of his way to praise every upcoming opponent as if it was the best team in football. This week, it reached the ultimate point of absurdity with his comments about the Detroit Lions. "Third-and-18, it doesn't bother them ... Jon Kitna's completed 15, 20 passes in a row ... they have a very good offensive line." Put the crack pipe down, Bill. Honestly, how can you make the Lions look like a difficult opponent?

Bills’ Losman Emerges From the Class of 2004

My first thought after reading this headline: He has? Really? To be fair, after a rough start to his career, J.P. Losman has had quite a month. "Buffalo has won three of its past four games, and Losman engineered the winning score during the final possession in two consecutive games." So has Losman finally turned the corner or is his recent success just a blip on the radar? (free registration/bugmenot required)

Leinart Would Love to Play for Old Coach

Cardinals rookie quarterback Matt Leinart would welcome the opportunity to play for his college coach, Pete Carroll. "I love coach Carroll. He's real close to me ... We've been through a lot at USC for five years and he's seen me grow into the person I am today and the player I am today." Leinart added, "Also, I wouldn't mind the Bidwills giving Nick Lachey a job. He hasn't really been doing much since 'Newlyweds.'"

Language of a Losing Team? Read Their Bodies

Welcome to New York. The Times enlisted Tonya Reiman and Maxine Lucille Fiel -- according to the article they "do not know much about football, but ... are fluent in body language (they usually analyze politicians and celebrities)" -- to watch the Titans-Giants game tape. Not surprisingly, they noticed a lot of shrugging shoulders, drooping chins and Manning faces. And then there's this: “Manning is like a movie star, Fiel said. “He seems sort of elite, detached, above everything. I think he's an introverted, locked-up guy, not very connected to the others.
