There's a lesson in here somewhere and I think it's this: When you sign an offer sheet worth up to $21 million, you shouldn't be eating at Denny's. Unless of course, you're there for the Moons Over My Hammy. Otherwise, there's no excuse.

Is there ever not a good time to make fun of Barry Switzer? As Deadspin mentions, "If you think [John] Madden's too easy on the players and coaches in the NFL, here's a chance to re-shape your opinion." (And by the way, a few weeks ago I wrote that I didn't know unauthorized footage of NFL games appearing on the internet was a problem. After seeing this, I now get it.)

Let's see ... one receiver (Reggie Brown) spends the off-season hearing rumors that his team wants to bring in a big name (Javon Walker) to replace him in the starting lineup, and responds by accepting the challenge and devoting himself to workouts.

What's with all these seven-year, $49 million contracts? Obviously, I think at this point anyone who reads this site is sophisticated enough to understand that Arrington will not stay with the Giants for seven years or earn $49 million. But is Arrington a good fit for the Giants' defense? Is his personality a good fit for Tom Coughlin? And how will all these free agent acquisitions (Will Demps, Sam Madison, Brandon Short, R.W. McQuarters, etc.) mesh in New York?

From the story: "Asked ... whether keeping Billick was a move in the right direction, [Ray Lewis] paused briefly before saying, 'No comment.' " To which Billick responded, "Where I draw my conclusions from is my direct interaction with the athlete ... I have no problems with what was said. I'm excited about where Ray is right now..." No one ever accused Brett Favre of not speaking his mind, even if he continues to keep his lips zipped as to his own playing future.

Signing a backup quarterback isn't usually a big deal, but with no firm timetable for Carson Palmer's return from a knee injury, it looks like the Bengals will start the season with Anthony Wright, Doug Johnson and Craig Krenzel (you can decide where they're listed on the depth chart). Given Cincy's tough schedule and the uncertainty surrounding Palmer, this could be a 2003 Atlanta Falcons situation, complete with the aforementioned Doug Johnson.

The 49ers gave up their second- and third-round picks to acquire a first-round pick, No. 22 overall. None of us really knows what this means, of course, but feel free to speculate about whom the 49ers will take at No. 22 and where the Broncos are hoping to add depth -- what would April be without draft speculation?
