This thread is for discussion of action on the field before, during, and after Saturday and Sunday's games. You can talk about who you think will win or lose before the games start and last-minute news on Sunday morning. Then during the games, discuss strange plays, great performances, and stupid announcers (of which there are plenty). After the day is done, we'll discuss the results of the week Sunday night and Monday before our weekly commentary articles appear.

"The Redskins need a win to get into the playoffs. *clip of Mora saying "Playoffs?"* Thank you, Jim Mora."
This head cold is pushing me to the brink of insanity. Thank Bruschi I don't have to go to work Tomorrow........
Just got back from the Jets game. What a horror show. It was freezing, and it was ugly. Bollinger stinks, and so do the Bills.
Alex Smith... FIRST CAREER TD PASS! Brandon Lloyd comes through for him.
I really hope that CBS gives me another game in the 2nd half. It's 27-0 for crying out loud!
I'm never having a son.
Reg-gie! Reg-gie! Reg-gie!
RE: 73
Played the Giants very tight at home. Trashed Buffalo at home. Beat Dallas at home.
Did Cincy play their starters on defense today? I'm really hoping they did because Larry Johnson absolutely smoked them today.
If they did.........i'm really liking this matchup......
Can anybody tell me what that last bizarro sequence was in the Jax-Ten game? ESPN gamecast seems to melted under the pressure of making sense of it (I'm pretty sure there wasn't a 60-yard penalty...)
RE: 133
They have nothing on the Jets. Last week against the Patriots, I think their first first down came in the 3rd quarter or something.
Sid:
Were there as many no-shows at the Jets game as it appeared on TV?
RE: 163
Yeah, we should do that. I created one for a different website I'm a part of.
Hey, the Redskins recovered a fumble!
RE: 187
Bam Childress isn't even 200 pounds. How could he be playing DL?
Jerome Mathis just got a no gain recorded on a kickoff.
Tony Banks is in. I wonder where his dog is.
RE: 205
What did you expect them to be showing? FOX had the rights to the game, and CBS wasn't allowed to compete by showing football.
Steelers-Bengals. Sunday. 4:30. Be there ladies.
And Tony Banks rallies the Texans to retake the lead. Tony Hollings was in the game at RB too.
If this is a ploy to lose, it sure did backfire.
I hate the Redskins.... they are going to let Mike McMahon beat them? After winning 4 in a row?
And teams will want Gregg Williams as their coach after this?!?!
Clinton Portis gets 2 TDs after halftime, or Washington is going home...
And for the record, if they lose this game they don't deserve the playoffs anyways...
Walt Harris, worst starting CB in history...
321 - Looks like you jumped off the bandwagon a little early.
Bizzare Martz-type challenge from Andy Reid. Had he won it he saves about 4 yards. Obviously he lost.
Listening to the radio broadcast, Reid for some reason challenged the ruling of a catch, not the spot of the ball. Which was insanity, unless he thought he saw Moss bobble the ball before he stepped out, and that didn't happen.
The only way Reid's challenge makes sense as anything other than a temper tantrum is if he thought that Moss had stepped out of bounds before he caught the ball. On the replay I didn't see a good angle on Moss' route, so I don't know if it's that's at all plausible.
Clutch offensive pass interference by Greg Lewis.
And the Tony Banks experiment pays off for the Texans as he throws an out route right to the CB, Mike Adams, who takes it back to the house.
Stupor Bowl tied at 17 all.
Incredible 19 yard run by Michael Bennet to the 1 yard line, multiple broken tackles, spinning free, etc... he can do that, he has terrific speed, but somehow he's never consistant enough to be an everyday RB....
Clinton Portis out on a horsecollar... throw the flags you *****!
.... my halftime prediction is that Portis scores 2 TDs, the Redskins win... their secondary is a swiss cheese sandwich on burnt toast however...
Field position IS KILLING THEM
The crew calling Washington-Philly have a really bad case of not being able to use the word "open" without adding "wide" in front of it.
The Titans just gave up a touchdown pass by someone named Quinn. The score is now 41-0. If you don't hear from me on Monday morning, you'll know why.
Commentators in Min-Chi are waxing on how the 2005 Bears are not like the the team from 2001 that also went worst-first... sounds like some DVOA comparisons warranted to verify that...
Why do the Eagles keep throwing to McMullen? Why? What could possibly possess a team to throw the ball to Billy McMullen?
Ugh, did we need the vomit-cam on the sideline?
When they flashed that stat, that McMahon had a passer rating of 101.3, McMahon should have just put the ball down and retired on the spot. That's as good as it's going to get for him.
RE: 216
Am I the only Pats fan hoping the Pats get the 4th seed.
No. In fact, I had a long discussion recently on a different thread explaining why I thought New England should rest the starters and not try especially hard against Miami, for this reason.
Kris Brown shanks a 31 yard field goal! I don't know if I should be happy or upset (even though SF is eliminated from first pick).
Is Carr injured, or is Capers just out to sabotage my fantasy team?
334: Well, the main difference is the 2001 bears offense was merely bad, and not earth-shatteringly awful. And the defense was merely good and not tops in the league.
Heh, they're comparing beards, Kyle Orton vs Ragnar (Vikings Mascot)....
Sid,
Carr may have hurt his shoulder, but I really haven't heard them mention anything. I haven't heard anything from Andre Johnson since the first quarter either--that must be killing fantasy teams that are still playing.
CBS finally switched to the 49ers-TExans game and it's everything I could have hoped for.
QB's falling down untouched. PAsses into the ground. Shanked 31 yard field goals.
BEAUTIFUL!
Carr took a big hit early and got sent to the lockers, along with Andre Johnson. Which is why we have Tony Banks throwing to Donovan Morgan.
Lot of stupid penalties in the Eagles game. Spach, Runyan, Rock Cartwright, etc.
HUGE interception by Marshall....
followed by terrific 20 yard TD by Bro Sweets! Incredible turn of events....
Adam,
what you've seen since they switched over doesn't even match up to what happened earlier.
There was an 18 yard punt, a blocked punt, a LB lined up against a WR on a TD pass, a pick returned for a TD, etc.
Well, I notice that Josh Scobee missed the XP after I automatically put it on there. Nice jinx, but the score is still 40-0.
I hope the Redskins lose this game so tonights game means something, then I hope DAllas losses so Washington still gets into the playoffs.
Make sense?
Of course not.
that was a beast of a pick. Blocked the pass, and then picked it out of the air.
Troy Aikman asked the weirdest rhetorical question: "Is Andy Reid going to put the ball in the hands of Mike McMahon and let him throw?" Is there anything in Reid's history as a coach that would lead you to think the answer was anything other than yes?
At that point, McMahon's interception was inevitable...
Re # 334
Andrew, if you're watching the Eagles, 'vomit-cam' has been trained on McMahon all game.
Re #336
Sid, I remember that thread. You sold me #4 was best. :)
And after I post that, the Titans score to make it 40-7 and end the shutout. Stop scoring while I'm posting!
And your next dumb-f**k penalty in Philly is a kick off out of bounds.
3rd and 12 on the 36 yard line and the 49ers run it right into the middle of the line.
Nedney is lining up for a 52 yarder! Now the Texans take a time out to ice him!
What drama!
And now they're punting it after the time out.
We could have a tie. Texans keep the #1 pick, and SF stays at #3.
Moments after mentioning the Redkins tendency to force fumbles but not recover them, the Redskins recover a fumble. Then the announcer notes that this is something the Redskins have done all year long...
Fitting that Texans-49ers goes to OT...
No one wants to win.
McMahon should have listened to me. If he had, he'd already be spared an interception and a fumbled snap. With almost 10 minutes left in the game, who knows how many more turnovers he'll add to that.
Bush will decide he'll stay in school, just to spite the loser
RE: 292
Looks like a close one here. :)
One of my favorite ATS picks was Philly getting the points. A lot of mental mistakes have hurt them.
Elway said no to the Colts, Eli Manning said no to Chargers.
Has anyone ever said no to the first three teams to pick in the draft before?
Well I guess you can't doubt Michael Bennet's speed... if he breaks into the clear, he's gone. That's the first time he's broken into the clear since... 2001 I think.
And in stumbles Koy Detmer for Philly, securing the win for Washington. :)
now, if the bush bowl ends in a tie, who would get the first pick?
Koy Detmer sighting in Philly.
RE: 312
Yes. To tell you the truth, I was surprised so many people showed up. New Year's Day, I would assume people would be recovering from hangovers, not attending horrible Jets games.
But like good Jets fans, they got plastered in the parking lot first (loads of tailgating) before watching the game. That's been the recipe for watching the Jets this season.
Did anyone hear about Mike Martz showing up to Rams practice this week? Apparently he accused his assistant coaches of being disloyal.
Martz will be fired tomorrow according to ESPN.
Detmer vs McMahon, reminds me of one of my favorite comments in these game day discussions back on monday night massacre by the Eagles, where someone here astutely noticed that McMahon leads his defenders better than Detmer (following 2 INT returns off McMahon and a Detmer pick returned only to the 3 yard line)...
RE: 337
He's good at shanking chip shots on purpose. I bet he's one of the players Bob McNair paid off.
RE: 366
Houston.
#369 - thats fascinating. There is loyalty to your boss, but its asking quite a bit for people to put their jobs on the line for that. I mean they may all be gone anyway, but what exactly did Martz expect them to do? Walk out on the team?
RE: 341
Yeah, I'm starting Carr and Andre Johnson in one league championship. This game is killing my team. The other thing that killed my team is that I didn't have time to sub the Minny D in for the Chicago one. I heard last night Kyle Krenzel was playing, but I didn't have access to a computer last night, and this morning I was in a rush to get to the Jets game early (to meet someone who gave me free tickets).
So Tennessee waited for Jacksonville to hit 40 before they started playing. Wow.
Sid, I remember that thread. You sold me #4 was best.
I spent a lot of time doing that, too. :D I can't even remember what thread it was, otherwise I'd link it.
I bet Nedney could've hit that 52 yarder. San Fran punted into the endzone instead. Brilliant! (if you're trying to lose)
Now it looks like Houston is punting.
Washington is going to win the wild card now!
Detmer to McMullen! The first-down combo of the future.
the sound of game over being scribbled in notebooks...
That was Sean Taylor's first TD? Didn't he return a short INT for a touchdown in his rookie year?
Sid,
it is raining and windy in Candlestick today. The wind pushed away Kris Brown's kick earlier. San Fran probably should have tried to pick up the first down instead of running it three times to set up a field goal.
Is it really fair to call a turnover by McMahon or Detmer a takeaway? Giveaway is more like it.
Taylor scores on a fumble recovery. Game over in Philly. The Rams @ Cowboys is now the official 'End of Season Nobody Cares Bowl'.
Semi-Serious question for Eagles fans:
Does knocking Dallas out of the playoffs by losing to the 'Skins outweigh the pain of losing to Washington and seeing them make the playoffs on your field?
Great punt by the niners... could this be the second game ever to end in overtime on a safety? (and for 100 points, anyone recall the first?)
So in Yahoo!, I picked New Orleans and Detroit to cover. Both were getting 13.5 points. Both lost by 14. Gah. This is going to hurt me.
Another punt coming up in the Stupor Bowl. 6:30 left...
#381: Sadly, no. If the game had looked like it was over early, then I could have consoled myself with Dallas being knocked out of the playoffs, but since the Eagles had to go and make a game of it, it was hard not to get sucked into rooting for them.
382: Didn't it happen a couple years ago with the bears?
Tony Banks!
You cost us the third pick in the draft!
Wow, Detmer is HORRIBLE. He should be released. He can't get anything on his passes.
371
thanks
I guess this one won't. If the Bears pulled off the safety in overtime I missed it. The one I remember was in 1989, and resulted from a punt blocked out of the end zone by Mike Merriweather.
I bet Andy Reid never expected to discover that taking Mike McMahon out of a game could ever be a mistake.
Niners could kick a FG now from the 20. But they'll run a few plays to see if they can't avoid it somehow..
San Fran rules.
James,London-I'll take it.
So Mike Adams, a safety playing corner, picks off another Banks pass that dies in the wind and laterals it to Ben Emmanuel who returns it to field goal range.
San Fran is going to mercifully end this one. Houston gets the #1 pick.
Heh, just to make sure the Niners have their blocking right and the snap count right, the Texans call time out. They don't want Nedney to blow this...
MISS IT!
Oh well. It was fun to root for the tie.
Joe Nedney handles the wind in Candlestick better than any other kicker I've ever seen. San Fran should sign him to a long term deal ASAP.
The long snapper just downed a punt in SF.
I am an ecstatic Redskins fan.... they played like a toilet in the first half.
In the second half the Eagle QBs out-toileted them... although the Redskins defense stepped up big time...
There was also some luck on the fumble recovery to turn the tide... (McMahon kicking it back to where Salava'e was after the RB dove into get the ball).
re: 378 - Taylor first TD. He did have a TD in his rookie year on a short INT return, but that was in the preseason. This was first in the games that count.
Hail to the Redskins. Great game from Portis today. And defense was great in 2nd half after not appearing all that interested in first.
Assuming the Cowboys win tonight, the 1st round draft order will be:
1. HOU
2. NO
3. TEN
4. NYJ
5. GB
6. SF
7. OAK
8. STL (11 with win)
9. BUF (8 with STL win)
10. ARI (coin flip with DET for 9 with STL win)
11. DET (coin flip with ARI for 9 with STL win)
12. CLE
13. BAL
14. PHI
15. ATL
16. MIA
17. MIN
18. SD (19 with STL win)
19. KC (20 with STL win)
20. DAL (18 with loss)
21-32 to be determined.
Re: 403. I think you have some errors in there. For example I show Arizona with 128 SOS and Detroit with 129.
If St Louis wins, Arizona gains 2 to go to 130, and Detroit stays at 129.
If Dallas wins, Arizona gains 1 to go to 129, but Detroit also gains 1 to go to 130.
They don't ever end up tied.
Re: 404
You're right, I forgot to double-count STL in Arizona's schedule.
Not to put a damper on that OMG soooo cute dropkick, but did the Pats get away with something there? As I recall, in the NFL, once the third QB is in the game the second and first QB may not return. Flutie is listed as a QB substitution in the Gamebook, he's in and makes the dropkick and then McFumbles is back on the next drive. Is the hooded genius losing a step?? Is he just begging to be caught?? Am I incorrectly remembering a rule after my 7th bloody mary?? Anyone that can clear this up?
Rowdy Roddy --
I think the rule changes in the 4th quarter. Just for occasions like this, when you want to mess around with backup QBs.
I think you can play as a kicker or punter without it counting as an official entry. Remember, Tom Tupa was usually listed as his team's 3rd QB, but that didn't stop him from punting.
Re: 406
The 3rd QB can come in in the 4th quarter without affecting the other 2 QBs.
Never mind. I just remembered he would have already been on the 45 man active roster as the punter.
Just reported that Mike Tice, less than an hour after the game, was let go by the Vikings.
Only the NFL could implement a rule that makes no sense in the first place and then suspend the rule in certain situations for no good reason. I'm really just going to get it over with and learn the rules for cricket.
Mike Tice and Mike Martz fired on the same day? What easily-made-fun-of coaches will be left?
Here's the schedule for next week's games:
Saturday
Washington at Tampa Bay 4:30 p.m. ABC
Jacksonville at New England 8:00 p.m. ABC
Sunday
Carolina at N.Y. Giants 1:00 p.m. FOX
Pittsburgh at Cincinnati 4:30 p.m. CBS
So I'm assuming the Sunday Night Dimwits are doing the Wash-TB game, and Madden & Michaels the Jax-NE one.
So tonight is the final regular season game for the Three Stooges eh?
Damn.
I'll miss you boys!
Suzy Kolbers first piece of fluff on the sidelines will probably involve Bill Parcells two dogs........
#415:
I'm going to miss them, too. I think, especially since this is a meaningless game and I don't have to work tomorrow, I'm going to spend the game drinking.
So, who wants to start the FO Mock Draft thread? :D I call Titans. And I get the 3rd pick? Yummy...
Close. It was about Bill Parcells.
Last year the Bears beat the Titans in overtime with a safety.
The game is linked in my name. I don't remember who got credit for the sack but the Bears had Craig Krenzel at QB who was trying to throw the game away.
Re:#389
Chicago beat Tennessee last year with a safety in OT, 19-17.
So the Rams have a horrible run defense, Julius Jones is coming off a great game and is looking like he did at the end of the 2004, and....
7 carries for 7 yards.
Geez... That's what happens when you don't refresh before posting after having the page open for awhile....
Hail to the Redskins. Even if they're banged up and will be underdogs on the road all through the playoffs, they put on a heck of a run to justify their FO numbers.
RE: Gregg Williams getting a head coaching gig. What am I missing? Wasn't this guy a terrible game manager and head coach at Buffalo? He's a good defensive coordinator - actually, check that. He's the "assistant head coach - defense", much like Dave Wanstadt was for the Dolphins under Jimmy Johnson. It's the highest position you can have short of head coach, and it's the highest position he has demonstrated competence in.
To me, this seems like the "Peter Principle" in action - people are promoted to the level of their incompetence. Can't we just leave mr. Williams in the position he is good at, in stead of promoting him to a position he's failed at before? Maybe these are just the words a Redskin fan who doesn't want to lose yet another talented defensive coordinator (Ray Rhodes, Marvin Lewis) and force the D to change its system again. But if I were a fan of another team, I'm not sure I'd want to give the keys to Gregg Williams.
Andrew 389: It was in 2004, Bears over the Titans with an OT saftey. Gamee recap:
http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/recap/NFL_20041114_CHI@TEN
Assuming Dallas wins, I show 6 and on as this:
6. San Francisco
7. Oakland
8. St. Louis
9. Buffalo
10. Arizona
11. Detroit
12. Cleveland
13. Baltimore
14. Philadelphia
15. Atlanta
16. Miami
17. Minnesota
18. San Diego
19. Kansas City
20. Dallas
Re:#299
McMahon and his family went to the same church as my parents.
So I’m assuming the Sunday Night Dimwits are doing the Wash-TB game, and Madden & Michaels the Jax-NE one.
Surely you jest. The SNF dimwits only do regular season, IIRC. This is their last game, Bruschi be praised.
Hmmmm, guess I should have read the rest of the posts before posting.
RE: 418
You have 3+ months to wait, young grasshopper. And yes, the Titans are yours if you want them.
I was thinking how odd it is to have 33 people working on a fantasy offseason for a week, and then for those same people not to have much contact with each other until a full year later.
Adam, you are going to post a parody, aren't you?
I can't believe Wilkins. He only nails long FGs or something?
Sid, no, I'm pretty sure they do one of the first-round playoff games. Who else is ABC going to use? (Also, I think they do the Pro Bowl, but who cares?)
Yes. The ESPN crew is ABC's "second" crew, so they will do the Redskins-Bucs game as their swan song. As a Pats fan, I say, YES!
Now Mr. Summerall, if you'll excuse us, Mr. Cosby would like his sweater back.
Ah crap. Thankfully, they'll be doing the game I won't be watching anyway. I'll be watching the three other game, i"H.
So McBriar nuked the punt, but Dallas got a penalty, forcing Matt to punt again. The 2nd punt was 29 yards better for the Rams than the first.
You thought that after Jones had 7 carries for 7 yards, his YPC could only go up, right? Wrong. He's now under 1 YPC. Dallas's rushing DVOA is going to take a huge hit. They can't get anything done against one of the worst rush defenses going.
He pulled him towards the goal line! WTF?
11 plays for Julius Jones, and a total of 1 yard gained. I think it's time to pull him and bring in Marion Barber.
re 381:
I got all I wanted out of today's Eagles game. Reggie Brown played well, Ryan Moats played okay, and Bruce Perry looked really good. They lost because the Redskins have a good defense and the Eagles' QBs were Mike McMahon and Koy Detmer.
In other words, I'm okay with the loss because it means the Cowboys are done. Dallas sucks.
Mike Patrick: And now lets check in with Suzy Kolber down on the sidelines for a report on the FUTURE of Dallas Cowboys Head Coach Bill Parcells......Suzy.
Suzy Kolber: Thanks Mike, when you think of TOUGHNESS and DETERMINATION and INTIMIDATION the first head coach that comes into your mind HAS to be Bill Parcells. The champion of two super bowls, coached in another, he's been through it all and he said today that NOTHING is final and that he still may be back next season. Mike, back to you.
Mike Patrick: Thank you Suzy, is there anyone else you'd want coaching your football team?
Joe Theisman: Not for my money. In my opinion Bill Parcells is still today the best coach in the NFL. It's really just not even close.
Paul Maguire: Boy, you're telling me.
Mike Patrick: I couldn't agree more.
Mike Patrick: Drew Bledsoe under center on first and 10 here for the Cowboys and it's going to be a draw play to Barber who's going to FIGHT forward for a gain of 2 bringing up a 2nd and long situation.
Joe Theisman: This is why Bill Belicheck is the best coach in the NFL, he mixes things up and likes to come out passing on first and 10 just to keep defenses honest. We haven't seen that with Bill Parcells this season and I think it's really hurt the Dallas Cowboys. And if in fact Bill Parcells DOES decide to come back next season, this is something that he's really going to have to fix.
Paul Maguire: Ah come on little man. This was the right call here. Get the ball to your brusing back Barber and let him run some people over. The only problem is, watch right here, he didn't run anything over except a couple of ants on the turf. In fact, he didn't pick his feet up enough to even do that. If i've said it once, i've said it a thousand times, if you want to move the football in the NFL, and I mean if you REALLY want to move the football in the NFL as a running back YOU'VE GOT TO KEEP YOUR FEET MOVING. Watch his feet. They just don't keep moving. Right here. He hits a wall, and POW. HIs feet stop. Thats why they play didn't go anywhere. And you're blaming Bill Parcells for that?
Joe Theisman: I don't think i've ever heard you say that Paul. Well. I don't know. I just think you need to shake it up a little bit and let Drew Bledsoe make some plays for you.
Mike Patrick: 2nd and 8 for the Cowboys, give to Barber, Barber finds a crack and dances ahead for a gain of 7 which will bring up a 3rd and very short situation for the Cowboys.
Paul Maguire: Now let me tell you something right here. Watch Mario Barber on THIS play. On THIS play his feet never quit. Even after his down, watch his feet. They're still moving. HA. He's kicking all the way to the ground. Even after he's on the ground! HA! YOU GOTTA LOVE IT! HA!
Joe Theisman: Oh this is a great call by Bill Parcells right here sticking with Marion Barber and not panicking and forcing Drew Bledsoe to make plays. This is what makes Bill Parcells so great, he keeps his cool. Keeps his composure. And never panics. Most coaches on 2nd and long would have just gone straight to the pass, but not Bill Parcells, because he realizes he has some running backs that can make some plays for him.
Paul Maguire: The only problem is he didn't get the first down, and now it's 3rd down. And no team has plays for 3rd down in their playbooks. They just don't. You don't have plays for this situation. No way.
Mike Patrick: Bledsoe, out of the shotgun on 3rd and 1...take the snap, pass out to the flat COMPLETE TO JONES AND HE IS GOING TO GET FLATTENED IN THE BACKFIELD BY ADAM ARCHULETTA FOR A HUUUUUUUGE LOSS ON THE PLAY WHICH WILL BRING THE PUNT TEAM ONTO THE FIELD!
Paul Maguire: Would you look at this? Would you look at this? WOULD YOU LOOK AT THIS? WHAT ARE THEY DOING? HOW CAN YOU RUN A PASS ON 3RD DOWN AND NOT GET PAST THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE? HOW CAN YOU DO THIS? WOW. HA! STUPID! HA!
Joe Theisman: When I was playing at Notre Dame we used to run plays like this all the time.
Paul Maguire: Was that before or after you changed your last name.......Joseph.
Joe Theisman: I never changed my name. The announcers just kept pronouncing it wrong.
Paul Maguire: HA! It had nothing to do with rhyming with Heisman?
Joe Theisman: Speaking of Heisman, how about that Reggie Bush? I had a chance to sit down and talk with Cowboys owner/GM Jerry Jones this week and he told me that he has never seen a player like Reggie Bush in all his years of football. I asked him if he'd ever consider giving up all of his picks for any one player and he told me that no. No he wouldn't.
Paul Maguire: The thing that impresses me about Reggie Bush is his feet. Quick feet. Never quit moving.
Mike Patrick: Truely one of the greatest players to EVER play the position.
Mike Patrick: And now we'd like to welcome the corpse of Howard Cosell into the booth, Howard, it's a pleasure having you in the broadcoast booth with us.
Howard Cosell:...........
*Football fans across the country pause to reflect on the best and most accurate football commentary of the night*
Mike Patrick: Truely one of the greatest announcers to ever put on the headset.
Joe Theisman: I think maybe we could learn a little something from him.
Paul Maguire: Speak for yourself Joseph.
Howard Cosells Corpse:.......
Joe Theisman: I had a chance to lay down and get a back rub from Bill Parcells this week and he told me if he could coach for one more year he'd really love to win a super bowl.
Paul Maguire: Well. Thats not going to happen this season.
Joe Theisman: Well, I know that Paul. But thats why he said if he could coach one more. Implying that he'd like to win one next season.
Howard Cosells corpse collapses onto the floor thus ending the best commentary of the evening.
Mike Patrick: It's been a fun ride guys. But tonight is truely the end for us. Lots of great memories here on Sunday Night.
Paul Maguire: Did you see Howard Cosells feet when he came in here? Wow! HA!
Joe Theisman: I took a sponge bath with Ray Lewis this week...........
Joe Theisman: This is why Bill Belicheck is the best coach in the NFL, he mixes things up and likes to come out passing on first and 10 just to keep defenses honest.
Ahaha! That's great. Just like Randy Cross.
Jeff Wilkins misses another.
Anyway, bad night for rushing. Cason had a nice 14 yard run, but outside of that:
30 attempts for 58 yards. Less than 2 yards a carry. Ay caramba!
431
Looks like he cant even nail those either
There have not been many opportunities to say this, and there will never be an opportunity to say this again, but the Sunday night morons are right. That has got to be the dumbest intentional grounding call in the history of intentional grounding calls.
439: It's close, but Randy Cross would refer to Bellicheck as "Bill Cohwer."
Rough break for the 49ers- after a season of nearly unparalleled suckitude, they don't even get a top-5 pick out of it because there were teams that were lousy and didn't play the Rams twice. Their total DVOA is twice as bad as the #31 team. Ouch.
Even though my team is in the playoffs, I'm really looking forward to the draft already. Lots of good players at the top, and I can goof off in class by reading mock drafts instead of paying attention.
how horribly inept must your running game be for your cornerback to have the highest YPC on the night
That intentional grounding penalty was grade A bullplop.
RE: 443
Exactly.
The horror show called Julius Jones continues. 15 attempts for a total of 1 yard gained. I would recommend Bledsoe not throw to him, especially. If Jones sees he's going to lose yardage like that, he should just drop the ball. How inept can you get?
If I was Bill Parcells, Jones would not get on the field again tonight except if I felt like playing him on special teams.
re: way back at #216
I never figured I'd be so glad for a Patriots loss. Funny thing was, if Cassel hadn't botched the 2-point conversion throw, the game would have gone to OT. I'd rather see the Pats face the Jags than the hot Steelers, history be d*mned. And I'd prefer they meet the Colts sooner rather than later. Personally, with this year's Patriots team, I'll consider the season a success if they get past the Jags and don't get blown out by the Colts.
good job jones, you bust off a 28 yard run, then follow it up with a loss of 5 yards. we all applaud you
Re: 430
I'm a Titans fan. Of course I'm antsy for draft season to start- what else do I have to look forward to?
ha. suisham misses a 47 yarder. i bet cundiff wouldve made that........on second thought, no he wouldnt either
Am I the only one a little sick of the non-stop praise towards Leonard Little tonight? I mean.......I don't know. Maybe i'm just a little weird.
I do love Joe Theisman justifying this challenge despite the obvious fact it isn't a catch.
Yes! A double-reverse miscall! They're going out in style.
Now that was a helluva catch.
It was also nice to see Leonard Little totally wet the bed when he had an easy sack after all the praise dropped on him tonight.
Wow, Drew Bledsoe hit somebody in stride.
This seemed like a very dubious pass interference call to me.
RE: 452
No, you're not the only one. I think a lot of people would rather not hear the Three Stooges praise a murdering alcoholic.
You know, I was kind of hoping for the SNF finale that I'd have a little more than Dallas playing the most uninspired game I've seen in a long while.
#438 Brilliant, as usual.
No one mentioned how in the Redskins game Reid failed to challenge the fumble returned for a touchdown by Taylor that sealed the game. The first time through I couldn't tell if it was a pass or a fumble, and I was 100% sure Reid would challenge. On replay it was an obvious fumble, but even if you're almost certain to lose, you still throw the flag and see what happens, that was game over, why not take a chance? And after he made that ridiculous challenge for 3 yards earlier in the game.
It seems to me like coaches screw up so many obvious things like this in the heat of the moment that they should have somebody up in a both, away from the action who's job it is just to monitor the flow of the game and make obvious decisions like this. Someone who could relay down when to use one of the 3 remaining timeouts when there's 30 seconds left and the clock is running instead of wasting 15 seconds trying to spike the ball. Of all the time and money teams spend preparing for games it's just so amazing to me how many things like this get screwed up.
Re: 461
Reid couldn't challenge the Detmer fumble because the Eagles had no timeouts left. I agree, though, that his earlier challenge was ridiculous.
For the last three years, the Jets actually have had a clock management coach, Dick Curl (no kidding), who pretty much does what you suggest in your second paragraph. Lot of good it's done them, as they've pretty much become synonymous with poor clock management.
#452:
I'm a Rams fan, and I'm sick of the Leonard Little lovefest. He's having a big game against a statue while being "blocked" (I use that term loosely) by a rookie RT who is starting only because of injuries. If Little is indeed this good, as a Ram fan I question where was this kind of performance all season? The SNF crew hasn't missed a beat tonight.
Also, I managed to hear the crew say that Mike Patrick and Paul McGuire are moving to college next year. I'm counting down the days...
Paul McGuire quote of the night:
"My scariest moment working with you guys is the first time I saw Joe without makeup on. I mean, it was terrifying!"
I think Theismann and McGuire are dating.
Re: Leonard Little
I was freaked out by that as well... I think there was nary a mention of his accident and problems.
James, London (and other Skins Fans):
Yes it was sweet to knock Dallas out of the playoffs, and McMahon couldn't have done it in a better way, by making the Skins work for it and get quite beat up in the process, even as we all waited with anticpation for his bonedheaded plays of the day. In the past few weeks we've managed to beat up DC's secondary, the Giants Linebacking corps, and knock Dallas out with a TKO. Not bad.
Now its time to start the bloodletting. May McMahon and Wynn never wear and Eagles uniform again.
It's looking like Drew Brees has a torn labrum......
Wow, what did "Rusher McFumbles" do to deserve the ridicule? The kid just played his first meaningful game in like 5 years, and he's not even the worst rookie QB in the league. He gets his first 2 TD passes without even playing a full game. How long did it take the top pick in the draft to get his first 2?
468: Umm, we love Rusher McFumbles, the nickname came from a comment back in the pre-season, and it stuck. Anyways, how wierd would it be if the last pick in the draft turns out to be the better pro than the first pick.
