Week 7 Game Discussion Thread

This thread is for discussion of action on the field before, during, and after Week 7 of the 2006 NFL season. You can talk about who you think will win or lose before the games start and last-minute news on Sunday morning. Then during the games, discuss strange plays, great performances, and stupid announcers (of which there are plenty). After the day is done, we'll discuss the results of the week Sunday night and Monday before our weekly commentary articles appear.

A separate thread will go up Monday morning to discuss Monday Night Football so people don't have to reload all of Sunday's comments.

Please ask your fantasy football start/bench and waiver wire questions in the discussion thread for Scramble for the Ball.

First!

I think Oakland could get its first win Sunday.

Now here, in a much more appropriate location, I will note that the Colts injury report this week is a joke. Click on my name for a link to the ESPN coverage, but basically they just put 20 guys on the report, all listed as questionable. Why even have the report if you are going to let people do stuff like that?

3
by Dennis (not verified) :: Thu, 10/19/2006 - 6:44pm

A few years ago the league fined the Cowboys for not listing someone on their report, so the next week the Cowboys listed about 25 players as probable.

Looking for some advice...who are the better Week 7 bye-replacements?

1) Leinart (v. OAK) or Pennington (v. DET)

2) Dallas Clark (v. WAS) or Alex Smith (v. PHI)

3) Kevan Barlow (v. DET) or L. Washington (v. DET)

Thanks - week 7 will be a tough one.

5
by Sid (not verified) :: Thu, 10/19/2006 - 8:47pm

I'd go Pennington, Clark , and Barlow, unless return yardage counts

but this stuff is supposed to go in the Scramble for the Ball thread.

Re: #2

Reminds me of the Pats injury report in the days leading up to their game against Atlanta last year.

Ought to be interesting to see what the Pats and Colts pull against each other with fake injury reports in a couple of weeks :-)

Hey .... where are the Loser League updates for week 6?

(not that I'm winning ... er ... losing? that)

re: OC playcalling in 4th quarter ...

If the Bears put 8 in the box against a 2 TE/1 back set, how difficult would it have been to put one of the TEs in motion and thrown a screen pass to the back with the TEs helping out on blocking?

9

oops ... wrong thread ... my bad :-(

10
by PatsFan (not verified) :: Fri, 10/20/2006 - 3:49pm

Boston Herald reports that Seymour was seen wearing a cast on his right wrist, with his thumb and fingers free.

11
by PatsFan (not verified) :: Sat, 10/21/2006 - 12:59am

Faulk (RB) and Davis (backup LB) have been added to the Pats' questionable list.

12
by Mike (not verified) :: Sat, 10/21/2006 - 4:42pm

It will be interesting on Sunday to see if JAC offensive production is based more on actual skill and ability or on Leftwich's relationships with the teams other skill positions...most notably M. Jones-Drew and R. Willaims.

Leftwich is listed as questionable following the MRI on a sore left ankle, the same ankle that was injured last year. He will travel with the team but was seen wearing "the" soft boot.

Hmmm

13
by empty13 (not verified) :: Sat, 10/21/2006 - 11:08pm

Normally I would give JAC more credit with Garrard (possibly) taking Leftwich's place but he might have had only 1 day of practice. I will take the points on that game.

Polian is still miffed about Skins trying to sign away Wayne?

14
by Mike (not verified) :: Sat, 10/21/2006 - 11:52pm

Re 13:
Dont know about Polian/Wayne.

But if Leftwich does not start or finish the game, it is an almost certian lock that Garrard will be the back-up QB that is used. When Leftwich was out hurt last year (5 games) it was Garrard that stepped in and had a 4-1 record during his absense.

Still want to take the points? Remember that we ARE playing a HOU defense.

The question will be: Is Garrard rusty? What I don't know is whether or not he (Garrard) QBs the practice squad.

Pats have announced three of their inactives already (didn't even make the trip to Buffalo):
Kazcur (OL)
Hochstein (OL)
Graham (TE)

16
by BC Pat (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 9:49am

Does anyone know if Garrett Mills made the Patriots' 53-man roster.

17
by Trogdor (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 12:04pm

Today we get Denver and Cleveland. Just a few questions:

1) How many replays of playoff games from the late 80's will be shown?

2) How many additional times will the announcers mention these games?

3) How many people will be required to restrain me from finding these broadcasters and ripping their spleens out with chopsticks?

Just a reminder that (as always), IRC will be open for business in channel #FO on server bendenweyr.dyndns.org. This week doesn't feature Chicago playing a terrible team, so that's a guaranteed 75% less complaining from me!

23
by Fnor (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 12:58pm

To clarify, I like the Bears. I do, however, hate bad football.

27

Thanks.

I forgot that the NFL does that.

28
by calig23 (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 1:56pm

Hah. Polamalu tied his hair up.

29
by Moridin (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:01pm

hmm... steelers/atlanta or GB/Miami... such a difficult choice :)

So anyway, if they aren't showing a sunday night game, why aren't they showing two doubleheaders then?

Stupid cable bastards.

30
by James, London (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:03pm

Steelers @ Falcons or Chargers @ Chiefs folllowed by Vikings @ Seahawks or Broncos @ Browns in the UK. It's not a vintage slate of games.

31
by oljb (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:05pm

first atlanta pass.... dropped.

32
by Just Another Falcon Fan (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:05pm

Well, that's 1 drop.

33
by Moridin (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:07pm

Well, that's one way to move the ball. What kind of ball control was that?

34
by calig23 (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:07pm

Aiiiiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!

How hard is it to hold onto the fucking football!!!!!

34
by TomC (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:07pm

Gah, I hate the "regional matchup" programming model. How in God's name can you put on GB/MIA instead of CAR/CIN?

Whoo, PIT special teams, whoo!

36
by Just Another Falcon Fan (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:07pm

Now that's how Atlanta might win today, a positive special teams game.

37
by calig23 (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:08pm

TD, Falcons.

38
by Moridin (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:08pm

And Vick responds with a passing TD.

39
by Just Another Falcon Fan (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:08pm

Now that was the third pass by Vick on the money...result; one catch and a TD.

40
by asg (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:08pm

Tomlinson fumble? Wow, that, like, never happens.

41
by James, London (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:08pm

The Steelers Special Teams woes continue. Atlanta go 3 & out, punt and Santonio Holmes gets hits and fumbles the punt. Atlana recover at the Stellers 22, and 1 play later, Alge Crumpler catches the TD.

42
by Just Another Falcon Fan (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:10pm

Of course, it helped that it was actually play-action on first down...I guess those first two Dunn runs into the line set it up.

43
by asg (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:11pm

Philly WR fumbles in the Tampa red zone, Tampa recovers. Not the way you get McNabb to throw to you more.

44
by oljb (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:11pm

Holmes almost made up for it.

45
by throughthelookingglass (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:11pm

holmes fumbles...then almost breaks one

46
by calig23 (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:11pm

Here's a strategy idea for the Steelers:

Don't put anyone back on punt returns. At least you won't turn it over.

And now, Holmes nearly redeems himself.

47
by TomC (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:12pm

And the Santonio Holmes redemption story hits a little snag.

48
by James, London (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:12pm

Holmes almost redeems himself. But for a fingertip tackle by the kicker, he'd have taken the kickoff back for a TD.

49
by Just Another Falcon Fan (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:12pm

Koenen saved the TD, although there was a clear block in the back (uncalled) that set up the hole.

50
by TomC (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:13pm

Who was Big Ben throwing that to?

51
by calig23 (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:13pm

That should have been picked.

What is this? Let-down game?

52
by James, London (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:13pm

Screen play to no-one is almost picked.

53
by Just Another Falcon Fan (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:14pm

Ben threw the ball straight at Foley...guess I won't nominate Foley for the two-way team with those hands.

54
by TomC (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:14pm

I sense that PIT/ATL is the A game in this thread.

55
by calig23 (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:14pm

Shut up, Cedrick. You caught the ball, but shut up.

56
by Just Another Falcon Fan (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:15pm

It's a wonder how Grady Jackson has bounced around so much when he can make plays like that at his size.

57
by Just Another Falcon Fan (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:17pm

soft zone, weak rush, and Hall looks like he did last year...result, 1st down.

58
by calig23 (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:17pm

Another near pick, this one in the endzone.

59
by throughthelookingglass (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:17pm

atlanta should have had two picks by now

60
by andrew (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:18pm

Jason Taylor untouched hits Favre at the 12 yard line, fumble, recored by Miami. One play later Harrington hits Booker for TD. 7-0 Miami.

61
by calig23 (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:18pm

What the hell was that play?

62
by throughthelookingglass (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:18pm

and i'm getting sick of hearing how deangelo hall is one of the best players in the nfl.

63
by Fnor (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:19pm

#61: Looks like a designed draw. Not a smart play, but might have worked if the blockers kept the rushers to the outside.

64
by Sid (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:21pm

lol gamecenter says it was culpepper who threw the TD pass. Pretty funny.

65
by calig23 (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:21pm

Got to love the Steelers' special teams....

66
by andrew (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:24pm

Farve pass batted back to him... and he throws it downfield again. That's a penalty, he should know better given how long he's been in the league. He could've run with it though there wasn't much room (he probably should have just batted it down). Miami declined the penalty anyway.

67
by calig23 (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:24pm

Okay, the hair is back.

68
by Just Another Falcon Fan (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:25pm

I'm sick of hearing about the hair.

OK, that was a bad Vick pass.

69

Troy with the pick!

70

71

72
by Just Another Falcon Fan (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:26pm

And that ball was thrown too late...

73
by throughthelookingglass (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:27pm

great pick by polamalu.

74
by Matthew Furtek (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:29pm

KC just scored... Rivers overthrew Parker on 3rd down and #25 (Wesley?) picked it back to the SD 10.

Next play KC had #84 split in as a TE, he motioned wide and was pretty open in the end zone on a 3 step drop pass.

75
by calig23 (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:29pm

79
by Just Another Falcon Fan (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:31pm

Milloy sold out the blitz all the way giving up the run.

80
by Independent George (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:32pm

That wasn't Vick's fault - just a great play by Polamalu.

Is it me, does it sound like there are more Steelers fans in the stands than Falcons fans? They called a penalty on Atlanta, and it the crowd was cheering.

81
by the K (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:32pm

I'm the only one here watching Bills/Pats? Good, you aren't missing much. The Pats are going to win by about 50. And I'm a Bills fan.

82
by Just Another Falcon Fan (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:32pm

OK, Steelers are moving the ball at will on the soft Atlanta zone.

83
by throughthelookingglass (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:32pm

falcons need to get a pass rush started

84
by masocc (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:34pm

Random thought:
If a play isn't immediately blown dead for having two many men on the field...

and say you REALLY had it in for the opposing QB for some reason...

what's to stop a team from 'accidentally' putting 14 men on the field, and drilling the QB if he's silly enough to not take a knee?

"Oops, our bad, 5 yards"

85
by Just Another Falcon Fan (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:34pm

One of these days the Falcons will actually make the pick...

86

88
by throughthelookingglass (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:34pm

it seems every steeler pass is to a wide open reciever, or a tipped ball

89
by James, London (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:35pm

TD Steelers. How do you rush 4 and not even try to cover Hines Ward?

94
by the K (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:37pm

95
by Jerry P. (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:37pm

RE:78

No. Patriots drove it down the Bills throats. McGahee gets his one long run for the game to pad his stats to put the Bills at the Pats 17. The Bills fail to do anything and get 3. Moroney takes the kickoff the Bills 21. Bills were about to force a 3 and out when Brady gave himself up untouched. Two Bills pile on, half the distance to the goal. First down. Pats will score in a minute.

Dillon scores scores on a ~12 yard run before I can finish typing.

96
by Just Another Falcon Fan (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:37pm

That TD was a confusion in coverage; Crocker watched the middle receiver on the offensive left, leaving Ward, the inside receiver, wide open.

Of course, if you matched up in man coverage, that pass isn't open unless you actually left Crocker on Ward...well of course the Falcons would have done that.

96
by TomC (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:37pm

One of these days the Falcons will actually make the pick…

Yes, so Roethlisberger has a TD pass, a couple of on-target lasers into traffic, and at least 3 coulda-shoulda-been picks. Reminds me of another young QB much discussed on this site...

98
by Kalyan (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:37pm

2nd TD run by Corey Dillon and this is just the first Quarter.

Will help me if someone provides a review of the "unncessary roughness" on the Tom Brady Sack

99
by Sid (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:37pm

Atlanta missing their D-Line is hurting them this game.

100
by calig23 (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:38pm

Interesting. On Atlanta's last kickoff return, they faked a lateral. On this one, they do lateral it.

101
by Count (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:38pm

Patriots- Bills:

3rd and 10 from the Bills 22. Brady escapes some pressure, but can't find anyone open, so he just goes down by himself. Two buffalo defenders then hit him when he's on the ground, prompting yellow flags from every official in the area. Incredibly dumb play by the Bills. Dillon scores a running TD on the next play after the Patriots get new life.

102
by James, London (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:38pm

For those not aware left tackle Chad Clifton is out today. In the first quarter Jason Taylor already has two sacks and two forced fumbles.

Unless Harrington literally gives the game away Dolphins defense should win this game. I see nothing from the Packer offensive line that tells me they are going to be able to either run block or pass block.

Which speaks volumes about the Packer coaching staff. I have defended them based on seeing some positives plus only five games in but if you have two weeks and then do NOTHING that tells me a LOT.

As TMQ states: 4 & inches, down by 11 to current division leaders - NE Pats, why did the bills not go for a QB fake or try and advance the few inches required.

Is it time for the proverbial "game over" or as they say "the fat lady sings"

127
by throughthelookingglass (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:47pm

another fumble by pit. is that atlanta's offensive gameplan today?

128
by JasonK (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:47pm

120:

Barber read the play and was sitting on the slant route. McNabb didn't see him (and I don't think the receiver broke off his route like he should have).

129
by BadgerT1000 (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 2:48pm

You know what Favre has become? Lynn Dickey. Every Packer fan over 40 tells me if you gave Dickey time he was a good qb if not great. IIRC he averaged over 9 yards per attempt one year. But if the team got any rush at all Dickey would topple over and/or fumble.

Favre isn't quite that immobile but the sacks/fumbles combo is getting pretty extreme.

148
by Just Another Falcon Fan (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:00pm

OK, the Atlanta offense has to do something other than be offensive this possession, or it's going to be a long, long day.

149
by TomC (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:00pm

The Packers game plan appears to be "Intercept Joey, kick field goal." Don't know how sustainable that is.

150
by andrew (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:02pm

147 - The last Joey interception wasn't his fault. He his McMichael perfectly, who unmolested batted the ball up and a few yards past him to a Packer. The first INT was his fault, though.

151
by calig23 (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:02pm

GB has gone pass happy. But they have no choice since the O-line cannot do a thing other then get in the way of pass rushers.

GB had a short 3rd and 1 and Traylor shoved the center/guard back into the ball carrier.

That was pathetic.

171
by calig23 (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:11pm

182
by stan (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:15pm

I think that Vick should throw to Crumpler on every pass play. He's better triple-teamed than the rest of their receivers one-on-one.

183
by calig23 (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:16pm

3rd-8 at around the PHI 20, and the Bucs come out with a 3 man OL, with the extra linemen way off to the left. Then they call a timeout, line up normally, run a 6-yd swing pass that's wiped out by a tripping penalty. Weird.

206
by BadgerT1000 (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:22pm

So the Packers sack Harrington on 3rd down and instead of calling TO the Packers let the clock run. Even though they have 3 TO left. So now only 1 minute left in half.

What am I missing?

207
by stan (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:23pm

197,

I've never been a Falcons fan (even way back when they were on local TV ever week), but you have to love Dunn.

Vick's throw to Lelie (the first one) was what he needs -- receiver in man coverage gets away from long hair boy and he gets to make a backyard kind of throw without reading coverage.

Awesome catch by Jenkins! Soon as we trash everyone but Crumpler, they show up big.

208

steeler fans (and i'm one) have got to realize soon that this team will not go far this season. these sorts of fumbles and fluke special teams plays bring to mind the steelers of a few years ago.

211
by johnt (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:23pm

What's going to be incredibly annoying about this is all the headlines saying "Michael Vick's 3 touchdowns" like it's an amazing feat, when he gets the ball on the opponents 20, the 25 and the 45.

212
by Moridin (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:24pm

Of course, he still has a ~50% completion rate with only 86 yards and an int, but 3 tds certainly makes that sound alot better.

213
by Rocco (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:24pm

Nice of the Steelers to stop playing. I guess getting their season going isn't high on their agenda.

214

215
by BadgerT1000 (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:25pm

Again, what am I not understanding?

216

#208 - lol.

218
by stan (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:26pm

Vick's running ability hurts his passing in a way I haven't seen anyone point out. He is better throwing against man than he is against zone. Yet, his scrambling scares defenses into more zone coverage because DCs don't want their DBs to lose sight of him if he runs.

219
by andrew (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:26pm

Is there a stat that tracks passes that should have been intercepted?

220
by blahblahfalcons (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:26pm

"Fantastic blitz pickup by Dunn."

seriously. whenever I start to grumble that they don't throw to him enough, I am reminded what an asset he is as a pass blocker.

221
by JasonK (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:27pm

Eagles have 9 secs left in the half, ball at the TB 10 with no timeouts. They throw to LJ Smith on a crossing route at the 3; Barber tackles him at the 1, end of half. Just a dumb playcall.

222
by Harris (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:28pm

And McNabb fornicates with the canine yet again. All I can say is, after playing absolutely terribly in the first half, the Eagles are only down by seven and the Bucs offense hasn't done squat. I'm going to go see how much a man can drink in 20 minutes now.

229
by TWD (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:31pm

To be fair, the pass to Jenkins was a deep ball, and even Vick's detractors will admit that he has a decent deep ball.

I think part of the problem with Vick is that everybody's trying so hard. Atlanta has a good defense, a great ground game, so they only need Vick to be a half-decent passer (see Baltimore, 2000 or Chicago, 2005) to go places. I think they're better off letting him do his thing and shrug off his shortcomings instead of trying to find the perfect offense that will make him look invincible.

Re #242: Obviously, the answer is C, Michael Vick. Though I'll give consideration to D, All of the above.

248
by calig23 (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:36pm

Or, alternatively, teams should tell their players to not doing any celebrating of any kind, or they'll get fined. Just hand the ball to the ref.

249
by TWD (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:36pm

That group celebration thing is going a little far. It's not like they pre-planned it, Hines Ward just joined in on a spur of the moment thing.

And why are group celebrations so much worse than individual ones, anyway?

Ah, 3&10 from the 30, down 14, 1 minute in the half, and... it's a run!

Welcome back, Martyball.

Hijinx at end in MIami. Packers w/ 4 seconds left have 55 yards FG. They make it, but before play ends penalty on Miami, 15 yards, so he lines up for and makes a 40 yard field goal... and there's a personal foul facemask on Green Bay, so back to 55 yard FG.... and the officials stop it saying that the clock ran out on the previous FG attempt, and will not extend the half on an offensive penalty (not the same as a 10 second run-off I think).

by calig23 (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:37pm

Aiiiiiiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Just kick it out of bounds from now on.

penalty on the kicker ... can't trip someone.

So, is Pit's special teams going to drop to 32 behind Arizona after this game?

255
by TomC (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:37pm

OK, this ATL/PIT game is nucking futs.

256
by Diane (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:37pm

If you took the OVER in the Pit/Atl game, you are fine right now.

257
by Just Another Falcon Fan (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:37pm

That tackle by the Pittsburgh kicker looked like something out of Double Dragon; sit-spin-kick.

Re #237: To heck with the refs... the Steelers ST unit is going to wet their pants by the time Cowher's done with 'em.

259
by throughthelookingglass (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:38pm

excessive celebration penalty really hurt the steelers. atlanta has had amazing field position this game.

Picked off!!

Nie play, Mr. Farrior.

Awesome INT by Farrior

Finally some good luck this quarter

261
by oljb (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:39pm

Thank god the Steelers have a good defense to make up for the special teams debacle.

263
by Zac (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:39pm

andrew, you've got it mostly right. The Miami penalty was before the play, however. Apparently, that's why Green Bay just couldn't decline the penalty.

Too bad. Rayner kicked both kicks (including what would have been a franchise record 55 yarder) very well.

264
by andrew (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:39pm

and Vick sees it rebond for a pick. Pittsburgh still has time....

265
by Rocco (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:39pm

My kingdom for a kickoff coverage unit that didn't suck.

Nevermind, it worked out okay.

266
by James, London (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:39pm

A comedy of errors to end the half. Dunn has to catch that pass.

267
by Moridin (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:39pm

Okay, that int was just crazy. Touch Vick, its called Touch.

268
by TomC (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:39pm

Aw damn, that pick's on Dunn.

268

Hey Mike, Warrick is only a couple of steps away. That fastball ought to be a change.

Awesome. The Pitt kicker was a member of Cobra Kai. "SWEEP THE LEG"

273
by throughthelookingglass (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:40pm

and a pick anyways.

274
by andrew (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:40pm

Rayner's 55 yarder looked like it would have been good from 65. He's been a find.

275
by Just Another Falcon Fan (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:40pm

Sheesh, that was not too hard a pass; Dunn just took his eye off the ball. And did you notice the replay to the right; due to inept pass patterns, Polomalu had two receivers covered 10 yards downfield.

276
by stan (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:41pm

258,

(chuckle)

277
by masocc (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:42pm

Clearly, anyone with any chance of catching a ball from Vick needs to change their equipment. No visors. That way Vick can just drill it into their facemasks, and not have to worry about their hands.

278
by Diane (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:42pm

Rudi Johnson .... 500 carries without a fumble .... nice stat.

279
by TWD (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:43pm

To be fair, Simms said the pass was meant for Crumpler.

Then again, if Vick had touch, Dunn would have figured that the pass was too hard to be meant for him and wouldn't have tried to catch it.

280
by cd6 (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:43pm

Cowher's going to run out there and play kickoff coverage himself.

He'll show these dunderheads how it's done.

Although, this might a situation where they start playing all starters on special teams

281
by TWD (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:44pm

#277,

In other wprds, the Falcons need to sign Pepsi Machine.

282
by masocc (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:44pm

Oh, and the last time Vick tried 'Touch', he was using the alias of Ron Mexico... and we all know how that turned out.

283
by andrew (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:45pm

See, Vick was trying to bounce it off Dunn, off Farrior and then to Crumpler. He just didn't throw it hard enough to bounce off Farrior.

284
by Diane (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:45pm

Perhaps NFL Films will play the "benny hill" theme when they show the pitt special teams lowlights ...

285
by stan (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:45pm

Anyone watching the Atl-Pitt game want to venture a prediction on what we will see in the 2d half?

I keep waiting for the Steelers to stop turning it over and turn the game into a route by just passing it on every down. That would be my best guess for what should happen.

But I get the feeling that NOTHING in this game will play out as expected.

286
by calig23 (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:46pm

Just curious. When Sterling Sharpe opens his mouth, are those words coming out?

287
by stan (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:47pm

286,

good one

288
by James, London (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:47pm

Pittsburgh might be better off trying the onside kick every time. The field position can't be worse than they've been giving up, and the Falcons probably won't score.

289
by Bill (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:47pm

The longest streak of holding opponents under 50% on third downs belongs to... Arizona???

290
by TWD (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:48pm

That's Shannon (Sterling's with NBC). And to be fair, I think he's rather smooth with words. He just has horrible diction for TV.

291
by BadgerT1000 (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:48pm

GB comes out against a reeling Dolphins team and the offense looks completely disorganized.

Two weeks to prepare and the penalties plus just poor play by the offense means that Miami will likely win this game despite doing nothing on offense of significance.

Pretty d*mning indictment on McCarthy if you ask me.

292
by johnt (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:48pm

239: Arizona opponents rarely get to third downs before scoring.

Re:#289

Probably a sample size issue- How often is the Arizona defense even facing 3rd down?

Gradkowski sneak on 4th and short gives Tampa a first down on the Philly 35.

I don't know, it just sounds like he's mumbling really loudly.

297
by Just Another Falcon Fan (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:52pm

Atlanta's thrown everything but the kitchen sink at Pittsburgh...and I bet Vick could throw the kitchen sink 40 yards...and they're still behind at the half. Too bad Rossum couldn't jump-hurdle the spin kick and keep the ball out of the hands of the Pittsburgh defense.

298
by andrew (not verified) :: Sun, 10/22/2006 - 3:52pm

Harringtonn starts the half with another pass to McMichael who bobbles it to Charles woodson who never breaks stride into the end zone. That's two of Harrington's 3 picks that were bobbled by McMichael.

Does DPAR reflect this?

The Bucs put a nice drive together (Cadillac running well), but stalled at the PHI 12. FG attempt forthcoming.
