Week 8 Game Discussion Thread

This thread is for discussion of action on the field before, during, and after Week 8 of the 2006 NFL season. You can talk about who you think will win or lose before the games start and last-minute news on Sunday morning. Then during the games, discuss strange plays, great performances, and stupid announcers (of which there are plenty). After the day is done, we'll discuss the results of the week Sunday night and Monday before our weekly commentary articles appear.

A separate thread will go up Monday morning to discuss Monday Night Football so people don't have to reload all of Sunday's comments.

Please ask your fantasy football start/bench and waiver wire questions in the discussion thread for Scramble for the Ball.

Hey, Aaron -- I see that you got quoted (and got FO mentioned) in Charlie Peirce's new Brady bio.

I was amused that the topic of the quote was in essence The Thread That Cannot Be Named. :)

Go Eagles.

I have a peeve I would like people to chime in about.

It's about all those b***s*** interceptions that should have been caught by the receiver, but the receiver mishandles the catch and the ball bounces up in the air and gets intercepted by the defensive player. I can't believe, in our age, that there isn't anyone out there who would want to seperate those kinds of turnovers over the awful right-in-the-hands-of-the-defender picks.

Even so, I have been watching football (NFL) since the early 80s and it seems those kinds of ints (the bouncy ones) happen a lot more often now than ever.

In the CFL (Canadian football, eh), we don't get as many of those ints. Of course the NFL football is more compact than the CFL one. Is there something I am missing?

Hmm, no paragraph breaks in the preview, let's see what happens...

Pat, since I assume you'll be around here at some point today, how does San Fran look today vs. Chicago based on their preseason game result this year? Are we looking at another Arizona-type surprise for Chicago?

5
by jimmo (not verified) :: Sun, 10/29/2006 - 12:14pm

Never mind, got a minute and looked up the info on Pat's earlier article; maybe it doesn't look so well for the Niners today.
San Fran led both San Diego and Chicago 17-7 at the half in the preseason; time will tell today of course, but the Chargers blew them out in week 6, in SF. The opposite happened to the Niners w/Oakland; down 10-0 @ the half in an eventual preseason loss, but followed by a week five spanking of the Raiders.

Maybe third time is the charm. Can we at least expect a cover (16 point line according to Simmons)? Not that I'm a Niner fan, just as tired of the Bears hype as Denny Green is I suppose...

That reminds me of a question that has been nagging at me for quite some time this season.
Who is better, Brady or Manning?
I kid, because I love.
Classic trap game for my G-men. Way too many times I have seen us come out flat in just this kind of game-- more so than other teams do. It amazes me how teams can sometimes keep a distinct personality trait despite years of personnel changes, from players to coaches.

"I can’t believe, in our age, that there isn’t anyone out there who would want to seperate those kinds of turnovers over the awful right-in-the-hands-of-the-defender picks."

The latter variety can be due to receiver error too, though: wrong route, falling over, etc. (I say this as a seasoned Joey Harrington apologist.)

Just from geography (New Jersey), I'm going to get the Jets-Browns and Giants-Tampa Bay games.

Wheeeeeeeeeeee.

9
by ZS (not verified) :: Sun, 10/29/2006 - 2:11pm

And #6:

I think Tampa Bay is no longer a "trap game" thanks to it's recent fortunes. Although I lurve Bruce Gradikowski (Seriously! Since the GMAC Bowl!), Giants win by two touchdowns.

or i shave my mohawk lols do you get it

by birk (not verified) :: Sun, 10/29/2006 - 2:20pm

3,7:

To chime in on this, I'm not sure that a ball bouncing off a receiver isn't partially the QB's fault. Guys with less touch on their throws probably have more passes bounce off their receivers. I don't have anything that proves this, just a thought.

12
by navin (not verified) :: Sun, 10/29/2006 - 2:22pm

Hey, Walt Harris didn't play for San Fran against San Diego. That's really bad when you have no depth at corner. No, the Niners probably wouldn't have won, but maybe they would have forced San Diego to punt a couple of times thus making it a closer game.

I certainly hope it's a close game today (CHI-SFO). Hopefully Gore can run the ball today if Larry Allen and Jonas Jennings do actually play. I always thought a good way to attack the Tampa 2 is to run right at the gut of the defense (if you can).

Pat Summerall is back! He's doing the SF-Chicago game. It should be exciting to see how many names he mispronounces.

16

Seriously, holy crap. I heard the voice and immediately asked "is that Pat Summerall? He's still alive?"

I'm guessing we'll hear a lot of this style for play by play.

Look for either Matt Bryant or Jay Feely to lead the Loser League kickers this week. The wind in the Meadowlands is blowing hard across (as opposed to along) the field.

19
by BB (not verified) :: Sun, 10/29/2006 - 4:02pm

Ravens & Sanits have both fumbled away their opening series.

I've seen a lot of the Saints games this season....and Reggie Bush has failed to impress me in any of them.

Not that my seal of approval means anything (because it doesn't) but I just don't see it.

29

Giants just ran an end-around to Amani Toomer! He took about 5 seconds to run from one end of the field to the other. Every other WR on their team is a lot faster-- why give it to Amani??

Re:#31

Shock-value, maybe?

34
by BadgerT1000 (not verified) :: Sun, 10/29/2006 - 4:15pm

McCarthy is definitely willing to take some risks. Packers have 4th and 1 at the AZ 24 yard line and set up for a field goal. Instead it's a fake. Now the Cardinals have a guy who plays it perfectly so it fails. But 7 games into the season McCarthy has faked a punt and now a field goal. And he has gone for it on 4th down more than one would expect from a NFL coach.

Interesting.

35
by calig23 (not verified) :: Sun, 10/29/2006 - 4:17pm

This is starting to be a penalty-fest, mostly on the Saints...

36

Instead of a field goal on 4th and 1 on the Titans 30, the Texans get a first down. And then promptly turn it over.

42

The and goal 5 wide QB draw inside the 10 yard line is the greatest play in football. Not only because it works every single time, but because it's so obvious that it's coming and Defensive Coordinators still do nothing to prevent it.

43
by Rob (not verified) :: Sun, 10/29/2006 - 4:23pm

The baseball season is over now though, so there's no reason for them not to start showing them, but I haven't seen it advertised anywhere.

I'm still not sure CH5 have the rights though. They haven't mentioned Sunday night games during MNF and didn't show the games when their digital channels opened a couple of weeks ago.

56
by JasonK (not verified) :: Sun, 10/29/2006 - 4:29pm

Plaxico Burress just made an amazing one-handed catch over Ronde Barber.

The Giants, at the TB 7, ran a fake screen left to draw the defense up, and then tried to run the fade to Plax in the left corner. Barber saw it coming, though, and didn't let Burress get behind him. When the pass came, Plax just went up and pulled it in with his left hand. Impressive.

Oh god. Bad wind in Philly today, Andy Reid goes incomplete incomplete 3yd run. Meanwhile the Jags are running about 80% of the time and with success. Total passing from either team at Philly so far: 2/7 for 7yds (a 7yd pass to Buckhalter).

Packer fans complain about Ted Thompson but his pickup of Ryan Pickett is looking like pure genius. Pickett is solid as can be against the run or pass and plays the majority of the time versus a Grady Jackson who was iffy week to week.

Charles Woodson limped off the field. Could be Will Blackmon time.

76

My football options today:

One CBS game, one FOX game, and some NY channel running some stupid Jets pregame show and the Tim McCarver show instead of the first game of the double header (wtf). One decent game option: Saints/Ravens.

And so I watch the endless quest for Reggie Bush's negative DPAR.

McNabb is looking awful so far, missing open receivers but leaving the ball open for defenders to make a play on it, and taking sacks by holding onto the ball too long. Garrard isn't looking too bad but the Jags are running so much he isn't getting many chances to make mistakes.

92

I would like to add to Adam's remark about seats. My family has Wisconsin seats in the second deck at Camp Randall and after experimenting with other locations (scalping, joining friends with tickets in other locations) we agreed to stay put. It really gives you a fantastic view. Several years ago when Wisky played OSU at night we saw the up and go with Evans developing before anyone else. Our entire section was cheering wildly before the QB had barely released the ball knowing it would be six points.

Anyway, in defense of upper deck seats.

Another hee-larious run by Brandon Jacobs. He runs three yards or so and is stopped by two defenders, who then can't move him. It takes six defenders to move him backwards, he drags one backward as they push him, and he STILL doesn't go down.

I know that most people switch away from executions like chi-sf, but I enjoy them. Not sadism, I treat them as educational experiences. You get to see good teams showing why they are good and bad teams giving a clinic in what not to do and what weaknesses kill a team. Maybe this ties in somehow with the statistical importance of STOMPS. I suspect though, that the GUTS v STOMPS phenomenon really shows that chance is far more important than most people would like to believe when the quality gap isn't huge, which calls into question the league's emphasis on "parity". Football as the world's most expensive coin flip?

OK, Grossman and Jones are still in. Is this the old "play the first series and then hand it over" thing or is Lovie really tempting the football gods here?

Carr looked like he took a shot on that play, but it appears to be a pull for suckitude.

Minor trivia like this amuses me.

Watching Deangelo Hall two weeks in a row.........wow. Just about every single pass thrown at him is completed. And that doesn't include the run where he stood up Willie Parker at the line only to have Parker push him 5 yards downfield.

How does this guy get so much press?

That was terrible. Brady Poppinga again blows his assignment and Troy Walters just wanders into the end zone for a TD.

Poppinga cannot cover. When the opposition is going to throw constantly to get back in the game why is this guy in the game? And if he IS in the game why not as a pass rusher? Because in space he is lost.

Good grief.
