This thread is for discussion of action on the field before, during, and after Week 9 of the 2006 NFL season. You can talk about who you think will win or lose before the games start and last-minute news on Sunday morning. Then during the games, discuss strange plays, great performances, and stupid announcers (of which there are plenty). After the day is done, we'll discuss the results of the week Sunday night and Monday before our weekly commentary articles appear.
A separate thread will go up Monday morning to discuss Monday Night Football so people don't have to reload all of Sunday's comments.
Please ask your fantasy football start/bench and waiver wire questions in the discussion thread for Scramble for the Ball.
Offensive line problems highlight the needs in the NFC North ... except in Chicago, which is kind of unsettling to think about.

First?
I listened to the Saints’ broadcasters when they played the Buccaneers the first time and they kept calling the new quarterback Gradowski. But it was his first week and no one had heard of him before.
So today I am listening to them again and it’s still Gradowski. The quarterback of a team in your own division, the second time you play them? Come on guys!
Is Horn playing?
They don't think so, but they haven't heard definitively.
#2 (Dean) - Horn is not even in Tampa. Some guy named Terrance Copper will start for him.
thanks for the tip
Is Maroney playing tonight? They're listing him is questionable, but nobody seems to be saying if this is just Belichick BS or because he may not play.
Which RB should I play? Ladell Betts or Najeh Davenport?
I reckon its ducks and drakes by BB, but I'm on the other side of the world so you might want to keep looking into it.
If he plays, and he's fit, I think he will have a big game.
FYI, Horn and Burress are both inactive this week.
How come so many people sing "Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the periless fight?"
Dave Garrard has been "flawless" in his last 4 starts? completing 50% fo your passes and leading the offense to 6-17 on third down against 2005 San Francisco is not flawless. Yay for having Ian Eagle and Shlomo Wilcots again. *sigh*
wait: if Mike Anderson of the Ravens is, as the announcers claim, the emergency QB for the game, and he took the first two snaps of the game, doesn't that instantly invalidate McNair and Boller until the 4th Quarter?
12 - They probably just meant "third QB," rather than emergency QB. He's likely on the active roster for the day.
12 - Only if he was one of the eight guys inactive. Any and all of the forty-five can play quarterback.
#12: Ah yes, thank you. I forgot the technical differences between 3rd and emergency.
Still, that would have been totally awesome if he was stuck there all game long - would kind of test the theory of Billick as "offensive genius"
Anyone else using Firefox having a problem with NFL gamecast crashing the browser?
Wow. Solomon Wilcots has brilliantly declared that if the Jaguars want to avoid a letdown, they need to bring "intensity and execution". Wow. Such deep and profound thoughts.
Way to jinx that third-down conversion rate, Aikman.
Marques Coltson .. TD ... punch a hawaii ticket for the 7th round pick
i dont care if he has no more catches or TDs, he is the Rookie of Year.
Redskins go for it on 4th & Goal from inside the 1 and get stuffed.
Hey Washington, you can do something besides run the ball inside the 5 yard line. When you fail 5 straight times, and draw a penalty on the one pass, I think it shows something.
I see Baltimore is killing Cincinnati, who have guiven up two turnovers already. Shades of the Bungles!
Washington stuff Julius Jones for a safety.
At least Washington was able to cause a safety, but yeah, I'd like a little more offensive imagination, please.
21 - well, two points is OK too.
Safety for WAS Defense ... after the DAL Defense stuffs a 4 & 1; wonder if either of these teams want to win today ...
I'm glad they went with 4 straight runs... that's why you go for it instead of the FG. Dallas' defense could spend the whole 1st quarter on the field.
Tiki breaks his TD drought. He had to do it from 16 yds out because Jacobs gets all the goal line carries.
Tiki Barber finds the endzone for the first time. Fantasy owners everywhere pop the champagne.
Tiki Barber ... first TD of the season ...
Live Ronder-Tiki tracker: 2-1
1st and 10, ball on BAL 41
Last Play: 4-3-BAL 41(8:18) (Shotgun) C.Palmer pass incomplete to C.Johnson (S.Rolle).
TMQ will be pleased.
Oh dear lord, do my eyes decieve me? Brunell threw long over the middle.
just a wild thought here: Is Reggie Bush for real? It is game 8 of the season and he has consistently failed to run the ball ... while other rookies have had atleast one good game ... jus' a thought
I wonder if my fantasy Julius Jones gets penalized for that.
Dolphins D is playing nicely, and the Bears seem to have lost Berrian. The Bears offense looks a lot different without Berrian.
As always, IRC is open in channel #FO on server bendenweyr.dyndns.org.
Anyone notice on the replay that Portis hit the wrong hole on the 4th down play at the goal line? He had a nice seam one hole wider (to the right) than the one he hit.
That is the WEAKEST PF for going at the QBs knees I have ever seen.
Sean Taylor is the new Mark Carrier... he hit him in the mofo'ing HIP!
Wow. I know why Leftwich isn't playing. If he was, you'd have too much strange throwing motion for one game, and the universe would probably explode.
Rashean Mathis with his league-leading 5th INT, followed by a Fred Taylor ~15 yard run that started as a run off LT, all the way back around right end. He looks really good this year.
Dallas avoid a 3 & out with a roughing call on Sean Taylor for tackling Romo.
Justice is served as Dallas have to punt.
Oh dear lord Vol. 2
words I never thought I'd hear: "nice play by Kenny Wright."
The QB didn't even release the ball! How can you call that "roughing the passer"? Taylor was diving and then Romo ran into him... holy cow that was an AWFUL call!
I cannot believe that personal foul for "tackling the quarterback's knees". That was a weak tackle to begin with, but seriously. Why don't they just give out a "The One Legal Way to Tackle a Quarterback" guide or something?
"Above the waist, not above the shoulders, no head forward, avoid hitting from the back, if the ball has been out of the QB's hands for more than 0.7 milliseconds one must come to a dead stop..."
I just can't fathom how they could call roughing when it was not nearly like the Kimo VO play... where a the helmet directly hits the knees... shouldn't they make it helmet-knee contact?
Washington's finding some open space down the middle of Dallas' D. Now they just need to hold onto the ball.
... and your 2006 Washington Redskins have re-taken the field...
Anyone have an injury update for McGahee?
I missed who's working the WAS-DAL game. Do they throw a lot of flags? Because if they didn't before, they are now.
BS running into the kicker call. Two guys came through the TEN line, dive, almost hit the ball, and their FINGERS hit Hentrich in the toe (if there was even contact... Jack Del Rio is incensed and believes there wasn't even contact... as does the crowd on replay). Hentrich flops, automatic first down.
Favre PICKED OFF BY LONDON FLETCHER, TOUCHDOWN BILLS!
Dallas complete a pass for a 1st down & promptly false start again.
McAulay's crew... not sure what his penalty rate is, but I think they have blown 3 calls.
1) On replay I have to admit it looked like Jones made it out of the end zone barely... Marshall pulled him forward.
2) S. Taylor play
3) Terrence Newman held onto Randel El in the end zone for about 5 minutes, including after the ball was in the air. Should've been PI.
4) On the PI play on Henry to LLoyd it should've been called illegal contact because the ball didn't look catchable.
VY's receivers are not helping. That's drops on the last 2 third downs that would have been firsts. Good coverage on the first one, guy was fairly open on a short route on the 2nd.
Another ridiculous roughing the passer penalty on Harrington. Utterly ridiculous. For a helmet to a shoulder.
While Dallas convert a thrid & long, if they don't at least attempt to block blitzing defenders, the "Tony Romo Experience" is going to be a short one.
WOW. SPECTACULAR catch by Matt Jones for Jax! Leaping, caught with 2 hands around the helmet of the defender (kind of like the Prothro catch last year for 'Bama, only not falling down in the endzone).
Damn. I really didn't want the Jags' O to play better without Leftwich. I really like Leftwich, but Garrard has looked good throwing the ball over the last few series (not too good on the first one, but he seems to have settled down a little). Guess we'll see what DVOA/DPAR say at the end of the day.
Any Jags fans? Is Matt Jones starting to play up to his athletic talent? Anyone who saw him in college playing football and hoops could see he was a just a gifted freak.
I haven't seen enough Jax to tell.
And have they ever used him to throw an end-around pass?
Favre brings them to midfield....fumbles the ball, Bills recover.
Well, that was a stellar fair catch by the Bears. 1st and Goal from the 6, Miami.
Why why why is Sean Taylor covering the #1 receiver? TD, Dallas, they're going for two.
And Harrington actually makes it happen. Miami TD
TD Dallas and they're going for 2. 7-5 down at the start of the 2nd quarter, it 's a strange decision.
Unrelated to football, does anyone know the point to showing footage of Nixon boarding the plane after resigning in the "this is our country" car commercial?
Followed by Matt Jones dropping a touchdown that hit him in the numbers while he was wide open. In the endzone. Gr.
Parcells is drinking his own genius juice. Who goes for two in the first quarter? And, predictably, the try fails. Unpredictably, Kenny Wright makes a play.
Does anyone know the point of that commercial?
#59
I've always thought it's an interesting question with punt returners like Hester as to whether their potential for the spectacular makes then worth the risk when they can't catch the damn thing on a consistent basis. I suppose he'll probably get better at it as time goes on.
57: Yes. And it didn't work too well. Neither has lining him up under center to run or throw. He's a long-strider and his first step really isn't fast enough off the line. The freak ctaches everything thrown at him in practice, one hand or two hands. In game, he's still dropping too many. Running much better routes this year though (and he jsut had a spectacular catch... and to be fair in the endzone one the cb did tip it at the last second, so the ball sort of rode up under his chin).
And a Miami DE just took an INT back 20 yards to put miami up 14-3.
RE #63:
I don't know what the point of that entire commercial is, to be quite honest about it.
Miami just scored off a second Chicago turnover.
Damn. Apparently one win teams are the Bears kryptonite.
Shockey got lit up on a potential TD, dropped the ball. Under review.
Can someone explain what is going on in the MIA-CHI game. How did Miami score a 6 yd td? Was there an interception?
Well now that Jax is missing Henderson AND Stroud TElsalk
weatj
Another pick by Mathis, returned down inside the TEN 5 (50ish yard return)!!! That's six for the year. VINCE frickin' Young ran him down and tackled him.
Okay, the bears special teams seems to have outsourced this week to the steelers'.
74 - Hester muffed a punt, and then Grossman threw a pick 6.
Bad snap, fumble, recovered by Dallas.
Re: 74Muffed fair catch
Reggie Bush Rushing Watch:
4 Carries
-7 Yards
Nearly giving up 3 touchdowns due to turnovers here?
WTF is this?
The Shockey drop stands. Incomplete.
Shockey redeems himself somewhat with a first down catch. First and 10 on the Hou 14
OK if you are going to bootleg/roll out at the goalline, with the option to run it in, why would you run all the way back to the 10 or 12? Garrard tackled near the sideline at the 4 (loss of 2 on the play).
As I was saying, the Titans were finally starting to move the ball by running. Of course it took Marcus Stroud not starting, John Henderson going out with a hammy (he was questionable with one anyway, i think this is preventative but word is he will not return), Reggie Hayward done for the year and of course Mike Pete down for the year too. Dammit there goes Garrard back to the 13 rolling out again. First and goal from the 2, not getting a TD. What happened to running up the gut when you are dominating the LOS (or hello a QB sneak at somep oint?)
did nick saban knew if the bears are who they thought they were ;)
Mario Williams with a sack. And the pretend jump shot ! Funny.
Apparently, Miami has decided they can win the game best by allowing 10 ypa on runs.
Eli sacked again by Ryans. 3rd and 31
85, nah...Nick Saban is probably smiling that the Bears special teams are asleep today
Wait...wait...wait...THREE GORRAM TURNOVERS IN THE FIRST QUARTER?
Of course, since when the bears try to throw it, it gets turned over, I guess ignoring the run will work for Miami.
Vince Young looks abysmal against a very wounded Jax D (alternatively, the Jacksonville D is playing extremely well against a weaker foe... Give D-Coord Mike Smith some credit). 3/13 for 21 yards, 2 INT. Rating: 0.0. 1 Rush for 7 yards.
Bears give it up again. I'm telling you - one win teams = kryptonite.
What do you think? Was that a Grossman fumble?
93
Even as a Bears fan, the answer is yes...
M. Williams with another sack?!? Or was that a hurry. I missed it.
Nate, now the only question is, is Miami's offense up to the task of failing misserably to allow the bears defense to win the game still.
Intentional grounding for Harrington...
I see a field goal here...
96 - Yes. Yes, it is.
Dolphins turn it over after first and goal.
Of course this means Jason Taylor gets set up again...
Randle El could've picked up a first down, but he ran out of bounds to avoid Roy Williams.
Portis just got clotheslined, personal foul on Keith Davis.
Next play, pitch to the left for Portis, TD.
Back to the offense to hand the game back to Detroit...
I predict that this will be different from the Arizona game. The Bears offense will score more touchdowns than the Bears Defense + Special Teams. You heard it here first.
JonL (#63): click the link.
Jason Taylor is trying to win this game by himself, and he's getting close.
I think I've figured out why GM's been getting killed in the marketplace lately. Apparently, they're using an anvil as a concept vehicle, and testing their cars on a linoleum kitchen floor. No wonder they can't build a car that people want to drive.
Thank you Kevin Harlan, I never realized that William Joseph being in the game was the most important pre-snap bit of info an announcer can share.
Also, Giants fans. WHAT THE HELL is it with the inordinate amount of injuries the Giants get on defense???! Coincidence?, bad luck?, poor strength and conditioning??
It looks like Washington was in zone coverage, but since Kenny Wright was the closest DB I'm going to blame him for that big first down anyway.
I'm not sure I've seen a 2 minute drill being run almost entirely on runs before.
After a turnover and allowing a TD, the Dolphins show some resiliance, nice drive going.
Damn. Apparently one win teams are the Bears kryptonite.
I said two weeks ago that if the Bears were undefeated, that Miami would be favored. Beware the '72 Dolphins!!!!!
Vince Young's best play has been running down Mathis after the INT return. Its been a funny game, with two of the msot mobile QBs in the game standing in the pocket and watching their receivers drop balls. 20-0 Jax at the half...can the Jaguars pitch their third straight shutout at home missing Henderson?
why do the saints run sweeps with reggie bush, has anyone tried to explain it? The don't have the receivers or tight ends strong enough to hold up even if it was the right call.
Sigh, Mare, when a guy comes toward your feet, don't hop over him. You have to stand there and take the contact and then make like a soccer star....
112 - Andrew, was that blocked? That was perhaps the worst replay angle I've ever seen.
How come I don't get a G-- d--- measurement?! That's close enough for a f------ measurement!
Anyone just hear them not censor Billick, saying
"how come i dont get a goddamn measurement? How come I dont get a goddamn f*cking measurement?"
wow
I hope they actually show a replay of that kick, where the camera angle shows us more than the holder and kicker. Would make it easier to decide if it was blocked or not, you know, if we could see the ball AFTER it left the ground... *sigh*
Mario Williams gets a roughing the passer call for sneezing on Eli Manning.
113 - I think it was tipped, but couldn't tell for certain.
Re: 117
When you sneeze, that stuff is moving at, like, a hundred miles an hour. That's dangerous!!
You've got to be kidding me. Rashean Mathis was injured when VY tackled him. He will not return (leg injury). Missing Jags defenders:
DE Reggie Hayward
DT John Henderson
DT Marcous Stroud
MLB Mike Peterson
CB Rashean Mathis
all starters
plus Nickelback Terry Cousin
plus reserve DE Brent Hawkins
Not to mention a handful of guys on IR prior to the beginning of the season
That's the third time this half the annnouncers have referred to Eli as "Peyton Manning."
Yikes.
As I once heard a broadcaster say about the Bucs, "The [Jags] may have scored too quickly." Without all those guys on Defense, they really need to control the time of possession.
Of course, it's true with the Jags now. It wasn't true of the 2001 Bucs. There was no such thing as scoring too quickly when you are regularly playing 9-7 games.
Miami gets a fumble on first play after the half. Returns inside the 12. Wish he could have finished it, though...
Everybody knows I'm better than my dorky brother! I beat Florida twice! How could they possibly confuse us?
120 - and, those are argueably the defense's five best players.
Wes Welker scores!
yeah the injuries for the jags are crazy at this point, and if garrard can make throws like that, hey...ummm leave him in.
I don't even know what to say anymore about the Bears.
The TO sleep in the meeting celebration, 3 out 5.
And TO draws a flag for a gratuitious celebration aftera TD catch. Dumb b*****d.
I saw an interview with one of the '72 Dolphins laying into the current edition, saying they had "no soul"... I doubt any of them are in attendence at Soldier Field today.
Yes, I know that even if they pull it off, Indy is still undefeated (at least until tonight). But it would have been a nice gesture (I missed the start of the game, so if any of them were there, I guess disregard this comment...
What just happend in the Giants game - pass incomplete by Feagles? Did they try a fake FG, or was that a botched snap?
Damnit, I wish I could watch the dolphins/bears game :(
A couple minutes ago, in the DAL/WAS game, the announcer guy whom I don't recognized was CRITICIZING *THE FARVE*. Amazing!
Scott Starks get in on the INT-fest that is vince Young with a pick-six. Rashean Mathis is pissed because VY didn't tackle him.
If I were a return man, I'd bring a handful of birdseed and toss it in the area I intended to run.
The Redskins waste the TO penalty with an Ant Hill Mob Kickoff return.
Bears go 3 and out, complete with a drop on a long pass on 2nd down, and a sack on 3rd down.
What was that about Jax not having depth on defense?
Maybe Eli should focus on his game instead of the Jags game. Could explain why he is only leading by 4 against the Texans.
#133
Joe Buck with the Brett Farve criticism.
Brunell must've learned Brandon Lloyd's name over the past two weeks.
Jacksonville has scored 84 unanswered points at Alltel Stadium.
Free Ronnie Brown!
If you're jack del rio, who do you start at QB next week?
Oh man. Travis Henry is still on the ground on the Jacksonville sideline clutching his knee. Basically the only offensive "weapon" (if you can even call him that) on the Texans roster. Didn't see the play.
Leftwich if healthy, Garrard if anything less than a 100%.
RE #145:
Man, if Travis Henry is the only offensive weapon for the Texans, no wonder the Titans suck!
Interesting, I miss the first 5 minutes of the 3rd quarter getting snacks, and Miami is up another 7 and driving in Bears territory.
wow, if the Redskins and Eagles maintain their current level of play in next week's game there'll be more penalties than points.
That's the second time the officials in the Miami-Chicago game misspoke the challenge. They just ruled a pass incomplete to Welker (hands on ball, ball touches ground then he pulls it up, but it did move). Miami challenges the ruling of incomplete pass. Official says on mic: "Miami is challenging the ruling that hte pass was caught". Earlier on a Grossman fumble that was ruled a fumble, Chicago challenged "the ruling of an incomplete pass". Chicago lost that challenge. Miami will lose this one. Welker was asking for a flag the second he got up, why would he ask for a flag if he thought he had a catch...
150: i think welker was asking for the challenge flag.
that didn't work out too well.
Ed Reed and Ray Lewis are both down on what was a whacky and crazy play.
146:
Agreed. Leftwich picked apart the Jets and there's no reason to think he couldn't have done it to these Titans. Let's see Garrard play a good defense before we crown him.
Watching Chicago run the ball, you wonder why they don't just run every play for a drive to see how that works.
152 - Does Ray-Ray get an assist on the tackle?
Washingtons offense has started to implode.
I can challenge that call too! Nyah nyah [redacted]!
Was that a 20 yard deep bootleg Grossman just ran?
Another Grossman pick.
If Gamecenter is correct, we have a Jason Allen sighting in Chicago!
We also have a huge drop by TO in Washington.
Jason Allen has played a nice game, it seems.
We have a Jason Allen sighting!
He's made two good plays today.
TO dropped a pass that absolutely would have gone for a touchdown. He refrained from pretending to sleep.
That was awesome. Dick Enberg just gets all dramatic with an emotional "AND RAY LEWIS HAS RETURNED TO THE LINEUP FOR BALTIMORE!"
And on the play Cincy runs Rudi Johnson right at Lewis and Johnson pushes him backwards into the endzone and completely runs him over.
Maurice Drew had 5 rushes for 9 yards, then gets a 48-yarder out of his own endzone. The short man can run.
"Reggie Bush is going to do everything in the NFL that he did in college."
- Joe Theisman
Real classy comment from the GLOGer in the TEN/JAX slaughter. Can't we do anything on this planet anymore without crybaby political commentary?
Man, Marion Barber is running all over Washington right now.
Well, maybe not.
"and ended up with a Rudi Johnson facial"
This is awesome TV (talking about ray lewis)
Randy Cross just made an assload of excuses for Ray Lewis on that play. None of which were valid, but thats okay, he's Ray Lewis.
Is anyone watching the ATL-DET game? Wanted to know if anyone can make a comment on Vick's play?
That David Carr TD was awesome. Jumps over the DB.
We've just seen the "Rudi Johnson Facial". Fantastic.
I've watched a little bit of Atlanta-Detroit. I saw Vick fumble once on a good run because of lousy handling of the ball.
Later Vick rolled out away from pressure--it was a nice play--and hits Crumpler on the money for a first down. But Crumpler drops the pass, his second drop of the game.
The Falcons are killing themselves with dumb penalties and stupid turnovers.
And Kitna just made an idiotic throw for a pick.
ARE throws another bomb, draws a big PI penalty. Washingtons' best offensive play of the half by some distance.
Teams employ "professional ball punchers".
/The More You Know...
Nathan Vasher gives the Bears first down at the 24, grabbing an ill-advised Harrington throw...
TD Cooley on the very next play. Dallas might rue not taking their opportunities to put the game away.
Is Harrington really going to throw the game away for Miami?
Seems like Harrington and Grossman are having a game of "Anything you can do bad, and can do worse." Grossman's winning that game, but Harrington is doing his best.
whoops. and = I
"Can’t we do anything on this planet anymore without crybaby political commentary?"
What is this talking about?
Seriously, Why is Miami throwing the ball, I mean i have the CHI def so I love it. But Brown is getting 5 yards a carry, and Harrington is like Mr. Hyde out there.
Also I loved the extended analysis of why a punt would have been better than throwing a pick on your own 24. Is there really anyone who watches football who isn't aware of that?
After 2nd and 1 at the KC 26, St. Louis goes false start, false start, incomplete, offensive PI and the drive dies out of FG range.
Ronnie Brown would be scary if he had an offensive line.
Miami has no excuse to be throwing the ball right now. People criticized Arizona's playcalling when they gave the game away to the Bears. But that was different, because their running took time off the clock but sucked, and their passing didn't suck, but it also didn't take time off the clock.
For Miami, though, giving the ball to Ronnie Brown is both working and taking time off the clock while they lead. Giving the ball to Joey Harrington is just plain stupid.
RE #183:
"3rd Quarter - 2:00
Okay, so I said that this would be a close game. I guess I dropped the ball there. Not as many times as the Titans have dropped the ball today, mind you. Still, this game has been as one sided as Fox News."
It's just a lame joke made by someone with an axe to grind and it's getting annoying that you can't do anything without someone having to have an opinion.
Hester just fumbled another punt! But there's a flag...
hahaha. Bears special teams one more time
Illegal formation Miami. No fumble.
188:
Yes, but where are you reading that?
ouch, that penalty was rather bad timing.
Miami is finding new and creative ways to give this game away.
on second attempt, Hester runs away from the ball. Miami downs it at the 1.
I will guess the sportsline "GLOG" which is some guy assiged to a game and writing his thoughts interspersed with lame jokes.
Guys like Gerald Sensabaugh, Tony McDaniel (undrafted rookie), Dee Web (7th round cornerback) and MOntavius Stanley (signed off of the Rams practice squad, I think) are in on defense for Jax. Tennessee is starting to look improved (as in mediocre) on offense.
Here's a prediction for next Sunday night. The back of Brandon Jacobs' jersey (which has a gash stitched together) will get a lot of attention from John Madden, including a chalkboard type thing.
Chopping wood alert: Tim Bowens offsides on 4th and 2 punt. First down. After Miami stopped them inside the 10.
MIA neutral zone infraction on a punt. This is close-your-eyes awful closing by the Dolphins.
Just checked out the glog. Whoever is writing it is terrible. "Lendale Wight"? A bad joke about White's weight? "Please Jacksonville, run the ball to spare us more of watching this game"? I was expecting something professional.
Miami has just had two almost picks on the next two plays after that penalty.
Yeah, but the replay makes it really look like a miscalled false start. Besides, Grossman keeps trying to makeup for it by throwing an int, miami just can't catch it... until the 3rd try anyway.
Giants look like they are not going to give Hou the football back, except maybe after a TD.
And the third one is picked. At least it was farther downfield than the first two drops...
Rexy not sexy today... his qb rating earlier was 26.3, gotta be lower now...
I hate Rex Grossman.
Farve intercepted in the Bills' EZ, returned about 75 yards.
On next play, Harrington throws for Chambers into coverage. Tillman had hands on the ball, but Chambers wrests it away and Touchdown.
188- Well fox news is rediculous, I cannot even imagine someone who has the slightest grip on reality taking it seriously. This is coming from someone who subscribes CATO newletters... Fox news isn't even reporting. Studies have shown that the more people watch it to more false beliefs they have about the news. Do you understand how crazy that is!?!?! No other news broadcast comes close to doing that, despite their sad emulation of the fox news model. The channel is ust fear mongering, editorializing, and parroting republican talking points.
Anyway on to the games.
Is there a more inconsistant team that JAC? What is with these guys? The Titans aren't quite this horrible.
I hope this puts the talk of CHI being great to bed. The signs have been there, and they are offically exposed. At most 1 playoff win IMO.
I really am so sick of TO, its to the point I hope any team who has have completely implodes, which is too bad cause I like Barber and Glenn a lot.
And as I am writing Grossman throws his Pi(R^2) interception.
And Easterbrook writes "game over, Dolphins win."
have a Griese sighting.
#201. Yeah that sounds about right. :-)
I meant to say "Nate wonders if we will have a Griese sighting."
TD VY-Drew Bennett. Surprisingly not given up by Scott Starks or Dee Web, but by big free agent Brian Williams. Who gave up the OT TD to Santana Moss.
The crowd is booing. "Jacksonville desperately wanted to stop them [from putting points on the board]." I wouldn't say desperate... I mean they had the 2nd/3rd stringers in there.
11 carries for -5 yards for the chosen one.
I apologize if someone else has already made this comment, but apparently the 7-0 Bears don't scare the 2006 Dolphins either.
And that breaks Jacksonville's streak of 87 consecutive points at home.
OK, if somebody had told you this morning "one of the teams in the Dolphins-Bears game will cough the ball up 6 times today", how many of you would have bet on Chicago?
Tj Houshmanzdeh blows his mind.
Yep, Giants run out the clock. 14-10 final
RE #209:
Your pointless ranting aside, if I wanted to see someone's opinion on Fox News, place #3,435,436 I would look would be the comments about the Ten/Jax game from cbs.sportsline.com. It was unnecessary and just bad form.
214 - what is Lebron James doing playing football?
Wow....
BAL got away with PI there. More terrible officiating.
Chris Chambers is a mighty mighty man.
ahh. New York just switched to the Mia-Chi game. Cool.
I would love a montage of the things Chicago sports talking heads were saying about Grossman the week before the Arizona game, just after the preseaon, and after this game.
I am guessing it would be very humorous.
And Miami jumps offsides on 4th and 4.
Encroachment on 4th and 4. Nick Saban suicide watch begins now.
Buffalo won this game with defense and special teams. Losman is never going to be a quality quarterback and if WM is out for any length of time their offense will vanish.
Folks can say "Favre lost it" but I think that diminishes what the Buffalo defense did at key times in the game. Fletcher jumping that slant pass. Clements tipping the ball.
That punter for Buffalo is pretty amazing. He stuck GB back inside the 10 multiple times.
The Miami defense must really love to play. They keep handing Chicago first downs.
220- Sorry for the pointless ranting. I really think it is just about the embodiment of everything that is wrong with our political system. (And yes I see it as an adjunct of that ssytem, not a self supporting entity). Thus it gets my back up incredibly to see anyone defending it.
Why are the Bears passing on 3rd and short?!
Re: 229
Well, based on the play of the game, they probably figure keeping the bears offense on the field is the best way to win.
Why the hell were the Bears throwing on 3rd and 2?!
"That sack destroyed any chance of a field goal?" They are down by 15 late in the 4th, what kind of commentary is that, especially given that they'd already gone for it on 4th earlier...
Bears turn ball over on downs.
231 - Because they were down 15 with six minutes to play
Nick Novak, wide right from 49. 30 seconds left, game tied.
As Novak lined up to miss the game winning kick, everything about his body language said "It's much more likely that I'm about to wet my pants on national tv than it is that I make this kick."
In that situation, why not try to pick up the first down? I mean, there was no doubt.
Nick Novak misses from 49yds in a tied game with 30 seconds left, an apparently is 1 of 4 this year. I think he'll be looking for work on Monday.
Bears throwing because the 'Fins stuff them every time they run, except on "passing" downs?
They're /not/ doing what Arizona did, and keeping running despite it not working.
will see if MV is any "clutch"?
232: LOL yeah must be a Joey Harrington thing.
Nate, I completely disagree. Priority #1 is getting a first down, or at least keeping a manageable distance on 4th. That's the third or fourth time they've sacked or nearly sacked Grossman on a 3rd and short.
I hope that the possibity of Vanderjagt having to attempt a game winner here gives FOX reason to replay his miss in the playoffs last year.
RE #230:
I would basically be your Bizzaro-World counterpart as it pertains to that subject, but it's just tacky as hell to interject that crap into the blog of a freaking NFL game.
The redskins defense is NOT clutch
Will Vanderjagt honk it? Stay tuned...
Adam Archuleta Strikes Again......
Can I just say...
HELL YEAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!
I'm not going to enter into a drunken stupor of happiness. I want to be sober for this one.
Go Phins!
Huge 3rd down completion to Witten, and Dallas should kick a straightforward FG to win it.
Hey look, it's a dead horse! Let's beat it a while longer!
Vanderjagt's kick is blocked!
Vandershank gets blocked!
Gotta love it!
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Kick blocked and there's a flag... UNTIMED DOWN. This game has now gone into "ridiculous" territory
Foul on the return, and with the game clock at 0:00, Washinngton has an untimed play, inside FG range.
Novak gets a chance to honk another one... :)
Wow!
Haha it's good!
I don't even know what to say about how this game ended.
So.... I take it this is a slam dunk "Any Given Sunday"?
Hoooly cow that kick was close to being out.
Novak good from 47yds. He keeps his job and Dallas lose a game they dominated.
Interesting end to the WAS/DAL game there.
#258
Do you mean WAS-DAL, MIA-CHI, or DET-ATL? ;)
Having seen a replay, that was a terrible kick by Vanderjagt.
NFL.com's scoreboard and play-by-play has Vanderjagt making the 27-yarder and Dallas winning the game. Hmmm...
My wife, who is admittedly becoming a lot more football knowledgeable than I ever imagined she would be, just said "That wasn't the idiot kicker, was it?"
Parcells is going to have a stroke.
Novak's kick looked for all the world like it was going wide...but it held the line and stayed good by about 6 inches. Wow. What a bizarre ending.
I really wish gamecenter would update, since it says vanderjact was good and dallas won...
258 (to me) actually I guess you'd have to at least give Detroit some consideration, though I don't feel that can compare to the degree of upset here...
Apparently to Sportsline, Vanderjagt made the field goal and the game is over.
Is the CBS corporation under some kind of equal rights lawsuit so they have hired the mentally challenged to run their live scorekeeping or am I the crazy one?
Hm, so if Aaron was right about the Colts and Bears, I guess we have to mark down that December 31 game against Miami.
Wow. I don't think I've ever seen someone fall down while handing off like Harrington just did.
OK, according to 253 - 260, the online gametrackers have it dead opposite of being correct. Both ESPN Gamecast and CBS Gamecenter have it 22-19 Dallas. ESPN Realtime has it 19-22 Washington. Just wacky.
I guess on a strange ending, you can forgive them, but they just have to get that right.
who won the WAS-DAL game? NFL.com shows that MV made a 27 yd FD, thus DAL won 22-19
Hey James (London),
Was that worth staying up late or what?
You know, did anyone else think in the replay that there was no way that was a 15 yard facemask on taylor? The guy accidentally got a hold of it for an instant and immediately let go.
Seeing that potential disaster of a handoff from a falling-down Harrington makes me wonder why Miami isn't just kneeling on the ball. So they give it back to the Bears on the 3-yard line with 30 seconds to go. What's the worst that could happen?
The Redskins-Cowboys game was the height of insanity.
Of course, had Parcells not foolishly elected to go for 2 in the first quarter, Mike Vanderjagt never would have had to kick a field goal that would get blocked and Dallas may have won the game and the legend of Romo would have grown.
The Bud Light rubber floor ad is funny!
ANd in football news Sexy Rexy really needs to learn to play QB
OK, seeing Ronnie Brown get whiplashed like that makes me even more convinced that Saban is an idiot.
Denver @ Pittsburgh or Vikings @ 49ers? Decisions, Decisions...
That was hilarious, Novak misses, then Vanderjagt kicks, and gamecenter says he wins with a "clutch" 27 yard FG on the last play, but he doesn't, because of all sorts of bizarre stuff that was actually happening.
Should Vanderjagt be the charter member of a Hall of Shame?
For people stuck at the computer, can someone summzrize the ending of the WAS-DAL game please.
277: Disagree
What is the probability of someone missing on a 35 yd FG. I am guessing BP should release MV tomorrow.
They're going to need multiple AGS columns this week.
Instead, FO should just write an article about Jacksonville describing how and why they were the only favored team to just totally take care of business in a game they should win.
And now a field-goal attempt?! What in God's name....?
ROFL so can I say know that the Bears turned out to be just what I thought they were.
I thought it was amazing that after that Arizona game Bear fans kept gloating. They kept saying that the Bears were the best team in the NFL even though they looked terrible against Arizona, because they somehow "always find a way to win".
Well now they have had another game where they looked terrible against a very bad team, and now they were not even lucky enough to pull out a last second win.
So can we say now that the bears are not that great and their record is mostly a product of their week NFC schedule.
Have to agree, TomC. No need for starters staying in the game when you can just kneel down and win.
As a Vikings fan, I hope they didn't give Chester more than a 2/3 year contract, considering they seem to be planing on running him to death.
And there is sack number one on Ben.

Until you can quote Bear fan posts from this site saying that, I'm going to disagree with you 100%.
Why do the Browns keep on getting 4 PM games. Who, outside of Cleveland, watches this team?
Thanks for showing up, Ike Taylor.
288 - Not only do they run him to death, half the passes when they don't run (about 30% of the time) have been to him.
282: Dallas kick is blocked, Wash returns to somewhere around the Dallas 47, during the return 15yd Facemask on Dallas moves the ball into Fieldgoal range with one more untimed down to play, Wash kicks winning FG.
Re: 286
Bears still looked damned good smacking Seattle around. I think Bears fans need to be concerned about Grossman, but the D remains excellent as always. And that's worth a lot.
Thanks, DeShea.
Ugh.
Re 282
Tied at 19-19, Redskins missed a FG from 49yds. Dallas went up the feild, and made a big 3rd dwon conversion with 0:07 left. The called TO and Vanderjagdt had a 35yd kick ot win it. The kick was horrible and low and was blocked.
Sean Taylor picked up the block and got some return yards, and a 15yd facemask penalty was added on to the return.
The penalty gave Washinton an untimed down in FG range, and Nick Novak kiced a 47yd FG to win it.
re 282 and anyone else forced to watch gamecast on DAL WAS:
Skins lined up for a 49 yarder to win it, but Novak pushed it wide right (pretty badly). Romo takes over and drives the cowboys down the field pretty easily.
With 6 seconds left, Vanderjagt attempts the game winner. It gets blocked, and the ball rolls around for awhile before Sean Taylor picks it up. There's an immediate facemask (incidental, it looked) that Taylor shakes off, then runs all the way to the opposite 45 or. 15 yards are tacked on for the penalty, and Novak makes the 47 yarder on the untimed down (time had expired by the penalty on the defense extended the game)
294 - Thanks.
295 - I don't know. Urlacher was taken to the locker room with a foot/ankle/leg injury. Berrian went out early. If those two guys are gone we're cooked the rest of the year.
