AFC Championship Game Discussion

This thread is for discussion of action on the field before, during, and after the AFC Championship game between New England and Indianapolis. At this point, we have come to accept the fact that people simply cannot discuss this game without losing their sanity. Any thread about the AFC Championship has turned into a steel cage match, filled with unsupported assertions and ad hominem attacks on players, coaches, and other FO readers. We are washing our hands of this. We love and support our readers but are not responsible for hurt feelings or flame wars. We are also not responsible for the abject stupidity that accompanies any talk about Colts-Patriots, and hope that our longtime readers will bear with us until this all blows over.

Well if the defensive players would stop and let the guy catch the ball, he would have kept both feet in bounds. 'Tarded rule.

Another poor call by the refs. Great. Force out. Right.

603
by johnt (not verified) :: Sun, 01/21/2007 - 11:12pm

595: If he hits him and makes him bobble it it's incomplete. Hitting him is really obviously the right choice, aside from the issue of telling players "hit the guy catching the ball.. unless his feet are within 6 inches of the chalk".

604
by cory (not verified) :: Sun, 01/21/2007 - 11:12pm

#595: That was my initial though, but how as a football player how do you repress that instinct to hit the guy with the ball? I think without a hit, there is no way that Gaffney gets two fees in, but its a tough decision to make in that short time frame.

Still a frigging long game with Good Peyton on the field. And the Colts D is not as sucky as before - they almost got the stop there.

606
by Puzzled (not verified) :: Sun, 01/21/2007 - 11:12pm

Score was 21-6. I looked at my wife and said. ok, Colts score a td before the half and will be down by 8. They’ll get the ball back and score another td, with the 2 pt conversion. That way it’s tied. Then, Adam for the FG win against the pats. The nfl is *so* scripted. , odd, they’re going for tying up all of the storylines this year. Get two african american head coaches in the SB; Peyton (face) finally beats the pats (heel) in a playoff game & gets to the super bowl (to win it); Saints are already getting praise for the turnaround they’ve had, without even needing to get to the SB. It’s basically wrestling, but noones given up the fact that it’s scripted yet. I hate the nfl.

(ok, so I missed the 2nd set of touchdowns by each team. sue me.)

607
by andrew (not verified) :: Sun, 01/21/2007 - 11:12pm

594 - very true.

595 - no, hitting him is the right thing, if you can knock the ball loose there is no question...

608
by andrew (not verified) :: Sun, 01/21/2007 - 11:13pm

Let's compare the Colts return to what Hobbs did...

ugh..

wouldn't that be the "ground can't cause the fumble?"?

609
by Gus (not verified) :: Sun, 01/21/2007 - 11:13pm

I like how the force-out rule is suddenly coming under fire. I wonder why.

1:18 left in 3rd qrtr. Game is closing in on legend status. Hope all the Colts fans are still tuned in.

612
by johnt (not verified) :: Sun, 01/21/2007 - 11:15pm

With Proehl, Stokely and Utecht out, who the hell do the Colts have left to stick in there? Dan Klecko?

613
by Gus (not verified) :: Sun, 01/21/2007 - 11:15pm

609: The Patriots, but fittingly given the score, not that much better.

614

Patriots defense getting more rest with the injury timeout...

615
by Zac (not verified) :: Sun, 01/21/2007 - 11:16pm

Re: 605. Colts didn't score a TD before the half. It was 21 - 6 at the half.

And paranoia is a sign of schizophrenia. You might want to get that checked out.

616
by Andrew (not verified) :: Sun, 01/21/2007 - 11:16pm

Isn't there supposed to be a point-of-emphasis on low hits on the QB? But Banta-Cain gets to hit Manning in the knees...

617
by Jay (not verified) :: Sun, 01/21/2007 - 11:16pm

Seems to be an awful lot of injuries during this game. Harper, Hawkins, and Utrecht knocked out for good, and a slew of other people coming out for multiple plays.

618
by Jin (not verified) :: Sun, 01/21/2007 - 11:16pm

Belichik is a great coach bacause he used his force powers to injure a Colts player so his defence could rest even more.

619
by stan (not verified) :: Sun, 01/21/2007 - 11:16pm

Some photographer will have a photo showing his heel OB before he jumped up to catch the TD. The photo won't show up until tomorrow or later in the week. No one will care.

620
by jonnyblazin (not verified) :: Sun, 01/21/2007 - 11:17pm

ACL for Utecht?

621
by MFurtek (not verified) :: Sun, 01/21/2007 - 11:17pm

Re: Gaffney TD
I don't see how he can keep his heels up and jump at the same time. They clearly came down when he went up for the ball, coming down out of bounds.

Also it seemed like the hit on Manning just violated the Carson Palmer rule... not too sure about it.

622
by slo-mo-joe (not verified) :: Sun, 01/21/2007 - 11:17pm

It's coming down to the nightmare second-guessing scenario: game decided by a field goal at the closing seconds. Ugh.

623
by Indy Todd (not verified) :: Sun, 01/21/2007 - 11:17pm

stan how much you got bet on the colts

624
by andrew (not verified) :: Sun, 01/21/2007 - 11:18pm

The colts are using those dump passes and running game successfully, eventually the pats will have to bring more up in the box and covering the flats I'd think...

625
by Zac (not verified) :: Sun, 01/21/2007 - 11:18pm

Dominic Rhodes is a beast!

626
by Not saying (not verified) :: Sun, 01/21/2007 - 11:18pm

Okay, Pats, seriously, you're allowed to cover the RB out of the backfield.

627
by Gus (not verified) :: Sun, 01/21/2007 - 11:18pm

620: the replay showed that Gaffney never brought his heels down on the white. He timed the jump perfectly.

628
by black (not verified) :: Sun, 01/21/2007 - 11:19pm

624, except when he's ducking from contact.

629
by johnt (not verified) :: Sun, 01/21/2007 - 11:19pm

The Pats look dead on their feet. I don't think it's an issue of rest, I think it's # of plays: The Colts have around 60 while the Pats have around 40, and each play for the Colts is more tiring because the players have to stay in their stance longer. And the Pats D is a lot older than the Colts D. They'd better hope for a big Colts mistake (which is usually a safe bet).

630
by andrew (not verified) :: Sun, 01/21/2007 - 11:19pm

620 - The same way Sean Elliott did in the "memorial day miracle" for the Spurs back in 1999....

Its possible. I'm not sure he did, but there is enough doubt that they can't overturn it without a better angle.

WHy we don't have more cameras on the end zone in a playoff game I'll never know.

631
by throughthelookingglass (not verified) :: Sun, 01/21/2007 - 11:19pm

You know, I'd really like to see the Pats lose on a bad call, or a fumble returned for a td, or a block punt return for a td, etc.

632

633
by playoffsfinally (not verified) :: Sun, 01/21/2007 - 11:21pm

re :490
Gus. You are a stupid idiot. I just explained to you what a DB does in that situation. You have never played and obviously are ignorant. I just educated you. I don't care what all you drooling Patriot lovers claim they saw, the replay is right in front of me and very clear. The receiver just didn't 'trip' on the dry astro-turf, the contact from the feet 'accidently' entangling caused the trip.

Do you patriot lovers ever question why you love the Patriots so much? IS is just because they win? Because my loathing of their team has to do with how they act, how they play the game and their complete lack of sportsmanship on and off the field. You Patriot lovers will move on and love the next 'dynasty' that comes along without missing a beat. But you know nothing about the game and have no respect for football. Just want to back a 'winner' no matter who or what they are.

638

Now when the Colts lose, will everyone shut up about the "lucky" Pats?

644
by Kyle W (not verified) :: Sun, 01/21/2007 - 11:24pm

630: I have been hoping for something like that for a while now. A blocked FG returned for a TD at the end of the game would be the business.

644
by Rocco (not verified) :: Sun, 01/21/2007 - 11:24pm

You know, I can't remember the last time I saw someone fumble and the ball get recovered by a lineman for a TD and it's happened twice today.

The nfl should just cancel this game. The Bears win the superbowl by default.

648

What a game. Seriously, let's just all step back and recognize. This has been a spectacularly entertaining game.

Rough day for Reggie Wayne.

650
by andrew (not verified) :: Sun, 01/21/2007 - 11:34pm

This game is the best game of the year, given whats at stake and how the tide of momentum has shifted back and forth, they are trading punches, getting knocked down, getting back up. I still think the Pats will win because they always seem to win these games. But the Colts have been impressive as hell in coming back, and I'm rooting for them.

...

site hiccup.

651
by Tom Kelso (not verified) :: Sun, 01/21/2007 - 11:35pm

So the site got killed for about 12 minutes -- now can everyone CALM DOWN?

652
by andrew (not verified) :: Sun, 01/21/2007 - 11:36pm

wow... momentum seems to be shifting again... sanders dinged, colts stumble twice untouched, manning gets thumb banged, now powersonal foul gives pats great field position...

653
by Gus (not verified) :: Sun, 01/21/2007 - 11:36pm

632: Look. I read your explanation (contrary to your insinuation that I might not be able to understand it), and I disagree that that was the case. It appeared to me--and many others posting here--that Wayne was his own worst enemy. This doesn't make me a "stupid idiot," and the fact that I never played cornerback doesn't mean that I don't know a good deal about football.

You had...let's see...142 posts to respond to me, and the best you can come up with is more personal insults and unfounded allegations that Patriots fans only cheer for the Pats when they win.

I've been a Pats fan since the Drew Bledsoe-to-Terry Glenn combo was our only hope, and our defense was a bunch of wussies. I didn't jmup on the bandwagon for the winning of the super bowls, and if we don't win this year, I won't suddenly become a fan of some other dynasty.

You're the one who turned this exchange ugly by suggesting that Patriots are coached to aim to injure. What else what you expect but for people to disagree with you, since it isn't true? And then when they disagree with you, you write thme off as "stupid idiots."

Wow, that is a really convincing argument.

654
by Andrew (not verified) :: Sun, 01/21/2007 - 11:36pm

651: I thought everyone was just taking 648's advice

655
by playoffsfinally (not verified) :: Sun, 01/21/2007 - 11:37pm

Typical. Both players facemask. Called against the Colts but not the Patriots.

Can you Patriot fans give me a credible rational explanation?

656
by zzyzx (not verified) :: Sun, 01/21/2007 - 11:37pm

So if the Colts win, next week might have the best Sport Guy column EVER

657
by Compucrazy (not verified) :: Sun, 01/21/2007 - 11:37pm

Back to the game and irrational discussion. So the Pats whipped out their voodoo dolls that drive right?

658
by cory (not verified) :: Sun, 01/21/2007 - 11:37pm

Any Colts fans still have beating hearts after that shot of Peyton getting medical attention?

Seriously, as a Colts fan I see NO WAY they win this game. Brady is excellent in 4th Quarter drives with a tied/ 3 point game. And the Colts receivers seem to have taken the noose from Peyton's neck and placed it around their own.

659
by stan (not verified) :: Sun, 01/21/2007 - 11:37pm

Why can't Dungy coach special teams?

660
by cd6 (not verified) :: Sun, 01/21/2007 - 11:37pm

Haha I'm glad my comment at #647 was one of the last ones to display and thus was there for that long stretch where the board couldn't update.

This game is just out of control.

661
by Not saying (not verified) :: Sun, 01/21/2007 - 11:37pm

Manning with a hurt thumb on the sidelines. It made him so mad, he didn't even look at the pictures they put in front of him. That's gotta be a first.

662
by throughthelookingglass (not verified) :: Sun, 01/21/2007 - 11:37pm

If you had 648 when Wordpress would explode, you win!

Who would have thought that Dallas Clark and Dominic Rhodes would be the Colts best offensive players this postseason?

663
by zzyzx (not verified) :: Sun, 01/21/2007 - 11:38pm

655 - I'm rooting for the Colts, but in defense of that call, the Colts' player ripped off the helmet.

664
by Gus (not verified) :: Sun, 01/21/2007 - 11:38pm

654: What, so you can write said explanations off as homerism and call us idiots? That sounds really appealing.

695
by Not saying (not verified) :: Mon, 01/22/2007 - 12:04am

I also want to point out something Simms said a while ago after the Colts ran it on 3rd and 5 or so. (Paraphrasing) People might ask why they run there when they have Peyton Manning. "Well, they thought it would work."

That is purely great reasoning. There has never been a bad call by a coach ever in the NFL. They all "thought it would work".

The classless comments of some of their fans here will be remembered.

This year: my second greatest football moment ... :)

And of course, that Adam Vinatieri, all he does is win games!

Atleast now the Tom Brady clutch shit will stop.

What was that, 3 or 4 3 and outs with a chance to put the game away, in the fourth quarter alone? All they needed was one first down that 2nd to last drive, and they couldnt even get that.

onestly, I think Belichek gets a little blame here: Did anyone see the Draw work once in the 2nd half? Indy was looking for it every play and they kept running it.

The dragon is slain.

Best Bill Simmons piece ever, this week.

I wish I was back at Purdue for the next two weeks. It't gonna be madness there. Pretty even Colts/Bears loyalty split in the student body.

Two things:
First, I had to flame myself out of here earlier in the week or else a large and crucial part of my life was going be lost to FO discussion boards. Sorry for the distress it caused any of you hardened football fans.

Second, Peyton was awesome. Go Colts!

One of the best games ever. To real Pats Fans I apologize for the Brady=Choking Loser comment, to all the jerks who wouldn't ever shut up about how Peyton Manning was a choking loser, eat it. A great performance by the Colts to interupt one of the great dynastic runs of all time in the NFL by the Pats.

"Atleast now the Tom Brady clutch shit will stop"

Brady has been clutch in other games and in other seasons. He wasn't today. Those are the plain facts.

Thank goodness. I was so close to burning my Colts fleece, which I wanted to do after the loss last year but just hid it in the closet.

It's hard to lose in heartbreaking fashion year after year. It's much easier to support a loser than a also-ran.

I am disappointed by the Colts fans mocking Bellichek and Brady. We won, it's time to savor it and be happy that we never again have to carry the burden of being labled fans of a 'choker'. No reason to rub it in like the worst fans of any team.

It will be interesting to see if Simmons has the balls to actually write a real column about this or just mention it in another column. After the regular season loss he avoiding talking about the game at length. I enjoy his stuff, especially about the NBA, for which he is most knowledgable, but I think sometimes he is too much of a homer and not as much a humor columnist, especially when he comes to the Pats.

Thanks, bsr, but no credit to me. I'm just stubborn and try to be a realist. Still not quite sure how the D stepepd up. (concerned about the special teams for next game...)

Many condolences to the rational Pats fans, and thanks to sippican who shamed me and other Colts fans who were abandoning shop late in the 2nd qtr; we were way down and taking shots at our team. The pick-six did me in, but Sippican was right; I was being a baby.

Two more weeks, then I can be happy.

Rich Conley,

Glad I wasn't the only one bitching about the draw. That was stupid.

All said, great game. An 'instant classic'. Peyton Manning played well, and while Tom Brady did alright, he gave it up at the end. Sigh.

Still sucks we lost though. That loss hurt :P

I don't even know who to root for now in the Super Bowl...

I actually thought Pats did a bad job in time management at the end of the game. Belichek should've called timeout with 1:34 to go and Pats wasted a lot of time getting to the line on the final drive. It's almost as if they forgot that they'd need a TD, not a FG.

739
by Puzzled (not verified) :: Mon, 01/22/2007 - 3:34am

Ok, well, I'm ready to have a crap team again for the next 30 years. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted. At least the Madden Pats are good.

740
by Sid (not verified) :: Mon, 01/22/2007 - 4:03am

You know why Caldwell was wide open, totally uncovered on that play? The Colts remembered that no one is allowed to cover Florida WRs this postseason.

741
by patsy (not verified) :: Mon, 01/22/2007 - 4:40am

that colts drive right before the half mirrored the momentum shift in the pats/chargers game last week - 3 points was all it took to wake up peyton et al.

game goat: reche "oops, the ball hit my crotch" caldwell.

can't win em all, i suppose. i expect petyon to be appearing in victoria's secret ads on top of his 40 other endorsements after this season. good luck all in miami!

by Bobman (not verified) :: Mon, 01/22/2007 - 4:44am

740 Patsy, not game related, but wasn't "Man getting hit in crotch by a football" an Oscar-nominated movie starring George C Scott on one Simpsons episode years ago?

Maybe Reche was channelling his inner Matt Groening.

Did Tom Brady get injured at some point in the year? He was listed as "probably" with a right shoulder something and his throwing mechanics seemed off.

746
by The AntiWizard (not verified) :: Mon, 01/22/2007 - 3:35pm

Brady has had more game winning drives compared to manning since brady started playing quarterback in 2001.

The pats have 3 rings come and talk to us...when you have at least 1 if not 2

Teams don't get lucky 3 times and win superbowls...ask/listen to any former player. calls and plays go both ways but not possible for 3 years when other teams have been playing in this league longer than the pats and have 0.

Vinny wasn't a great QB either way. Very mediocre. He shouldn't even get HoF consideration.

RE: 360

James, London: Go to bed. This game is over. I don’t care how many goals Arsenal scored. The Patriots are not going to lose this game.

The suckers really took the bait on this one.

RE: 401

Final score will be: 42 - 9.

RE: 497

The record for a thread is WELL above 1,100 or 1,111 for that matter.

RE: 535

face guarding is allowed as long as no contact occurs. Bad call.

All these whining Pat fans are a scourge of the internet. First, we had to listen to all their crying about the officiating in the AFCC game, and now they have abandoned the AFC to support the Bears in the SB. I have not encountered more childish fans in the NFL. They forget their history: until recently, they sucked for many years. No one will feel sorry for them when they return to mediocrity as all teams do in the age of parity.
