Wow I feel like the defensive end really should have recognized the screen when the tackle got out of his way

Turner.

Bill Belichick, this might be a good time to grow some of those magic beans.

*sigh*. Posting is all about timing.

Great use of a blocker there...

by James, London (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:05pm

Assuming the XP is good, 14-3 is a much fairer reflection of how the game has gone.

306
by Peter Libero (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:05pm

Michael. Da Burna. Turna. Not looking very good for the Pats, they haven't shown very much at all on defense so far.

307
by Daniel (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:06pm

glass is half full interpretation: now at least the offense has one more chance to get something going this half

308
by Rocco (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:06pm

298-

It could be worse. You could be looking at Chan Gailey as your team's head coach. Just shoot me now.

309
by Thomas L. (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:06pm

LT makes the screen pass look scary. God the Pats are getting blown out here. I predicted a blowout; now it's pretty clear that unless the Pats get some offense, it's over.

310
by Dan Led (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:06pm

Can the Browns just offer Turner a contract now...please?

311
by Trogdor (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:06pm

Perfectly executed screen pass. Sweet moves by LDT, good blocking downfield, horrible tackling. Good play by the defender running it down from out of bounds (which may actually be a penalty depending on how long he was out). I really like Neal's block about 35 yards downfield. And a perfect throw - getting it over Colvin that accurately couldn't've been easy.

312
by Artur Klosek (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:07pm

Go Chargers!
At this rate LT will gain about one gazzilion combined yards...

313
by The Other Jed (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:07pm

I love it. This is the second time today a football announcer has used the phrase "home run hitter" to describe an outstanding football player.

Baseball owns.

314

306

Or offense, for that matter

315
by Daniel (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:08pm

306 I think they've done all right considering the NE offense has given them about 30 seconds of rest every time

316
by vijay (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:10pm

SD is playing like the number one seed. They are playing a complete game and if Rivers had played even slightly better early, this could be worse. As an unbiased fan, here's to hoping that Brady figures this out so we can get a good game here.

317
by Daniel (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:11pm

this sucks a$$

318
by BadgerT1000 (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:11pm

vijay:

That's somewhat unfair to Rivers. THe SD receivers dropped some balls early. Gee, cut the kid some slack.

This football weekend has been awesome.

319
by vijay (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:12pm

313: It's somewhat sad isn't it that the only home run hitters that Americans watch anymore is on the gridiron and not on the bases? Baseball sucks.

320
by Dave (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:13pm

rivers hasn't been as much of a problem as his receivers have been

chargers dl and lb look pretty healthy. the san diego defense has been banged up last half of the season... if they're right physically again they're significantly better then their final rankings

321
by vijay (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:14pm

318: I agree that the receivers have done their best Seahawks impersonation. But Rivers seemed to have some mild happy feet as well and has not been as accurate as he has been this year. But I would agree with your point and add this, had the receivers not dropped as many passes as they have, Rivers might have gotten some confidence and not played as jittery.

But as a young kid in his 1st playoff game, he's fine. I'm a Cowboy fan, so I know that it doesn't always look good on your 1st go-round!

322
by Tom Kelso (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:15pm

Nice little drive by NE here. The Patriots aren't dead until there's about six feet of dirt on top of them -- and even then, Joss Whedon might have a series he wants to keep going, right?

323
by The Other Jed (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:17pm

Re 319

Hey, we're all sports fans here. I wasn't taking a shot at football, so there's no need to get snippy.

BTW, Pats are moving downfield, so let's hold off on throwing dirt on their grave.

324
by Ben B. (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:18pm

The Chargers defense in these situations is always abysmal.

325

327

SD worst Red Zone defense comes into play.

328
by Dave (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:19pm

nice drive by the pats. chargers weren't bringing enough pressure. i hate prevent-style defenses.

329
by rollo (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:19pm

NE is flat out amazing at the two minute drill.

330
by James, London (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:19pm

Where did Jabar Gaffney come from? That's two weeks in row.

331
by John (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:19pm

we've got ourselves a game, folks.

332
by Tom Kelso (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:21pm

I would like to request the tape of this drive be sent to a certain address in Owings Mills, MD, so the idea of what to do at this point of the game might sink in on a pair of gentlemen.....

333
by vijay (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:21pm

And that's why Brady has won a few games in the playoffs. Amazing. Brady played great in that drive. And as a guy living in Houston, it drives me nuts to see how good Gaffney has been in NE. He stunk in Houston.

323: My bad - I just don't like baseball and I'm pretty territorial about football. I love me some football and I don't enjoy baseball. My bad.

334
by Jesse (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:21pm

"Jabar Gaffney, what a find"

I nearly choked. He's been abysmal all year long. He's caught eleven passes in the regular season.

335
by James, London (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:21pm

Smart play by the lineman who caught the kick. There's time to throw it up.

336
by Jesse (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:22pm

What's the point of falling on the ball if you're just going to kneel it? Might as well try to get a good return on the kickoff

337
by James, London (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:22pm

And Marty makes an ass of me. Why not throw it up?

338
by B (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:23pm

337: Cause it would be smart? Why not hand it off to LTD and watch him run it 80 yards?

Used to be David Carr's moving target

340
by ChrisV (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:24pm

The Chargers prevent defense should be called "allow defense".

341
by Paul (London,UK) (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:25pm

Apart from Pats, Colts & Bears fans, is there anyone who doesn't want to see a Chargers-Saints Superbowl? Waits for abuse.

342
by Tom Kelso (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:26pm

None coming from me, Paul; I'd think anyone without a particular dog in the fight would love to see what those two teams could bring to the game.

343
by Jesse (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:28pm

341- I've been hoping for that.
399- Yep. Absolutely. Totally agree.

344
by James, London (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:29pm

Chargers-Saints would be my preferred Superbowl, but it wouldn't kill me to see the Saints play Indy. As a Miami fan, I just hope it's not New England.

345
by zzyzx (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:29pm

Once the Hawks were eliminated, SD/NO was my hope.

346
by Gordon (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:30pm

Hasselbeck: 18/33 (54%)
Grossman: 21/38 (55%)

Brady: 9/19 (47%)
Rivers: 7/16 (43%)

(Last two are at the half, obviously.)

It's just a sucky day for quarterbacking all around, except for that drive just now by Brady. As a non-involved viewer, I really enjoyed watching that (every bit as much as that long LT run).

Boomer quote: "This is a professional football team."
Aw shit, I thought I was watching a high school game.

347
by Raskolnikov (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:30pm

Shawn Merriman hasn't had much of an impact so far. They've done a decent blocking him so far.

Jamal Williams is a heck of an interior player.

348
by Sophandros (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:31pm

Indy/NO would be interesting from an apocalyptic stand point. Either Manning wins the Big Game (tm) or the Saints win the Super Bowl.

Either event is followed by dogs and cats living together.

349
by vijay (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:31pm

341: I totally agree. Watching the Saints would be great. And the Chargers are so fun to watch.

343: 399 doesn't makes sense to me...

350
by Ilanin (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:32pm

I want to see Indy win the SB (shut various annoying storylines up), which kind of requires them to be in it, but I could live with SD over NO. (Because Marty winning is almost as good as Indy winning from this point of view).

351
by slo-mo-joe (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:33pm

Of course, it will end instead with Indy-Chicago. Bleh.

352
by B (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:35pm

351: I just hope the story of the superbowl isn't Manning continually harassed by the Bears Defense while Grossman gets 270 yards, 3TDs and a pick and is declared better than Manning.

353
by Raskolnikov (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:36pm

If SD moves on. There's absolutely no way I can see Indy's D containing that offense. It's the worst possible set of matchups for Indy.

354
by Jesse (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:39pm

They ought to go for it

355
by Tom Kelso (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:39pm

Let's see: SD has a great running back, a great tight end, a big physical O-line, and a middling corps of wideouts, with a QB with questions.

Yeah, Indy certainly hasn't been able to handle that in the past two games -- and do you know how much it f***ing GALLS me to say that?

356
by Paul (London,UK) (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:39pm

Re 351
If there's a God, this cannot happen. Apart from anything else, I'm going to waste two weeks trying to decide who I dislike least.
Probably Chicago......I already feel like I need a shower.

Very un-Belichik. Fake punt?

358

Sauerbrun is so much better than Walter and the other stooges. I guess teams were wary of his drug history.

359
by fogarty (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:42pm

Re 353: Wasn´t that also the reason why they were supposed to lose to KC?

360
by cabot41 (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:43pm

Running that play short of the first down ... that is why the NE recievers are just not very good this year. Deon Branch runs that route for a first down, period.

361
by Ilanin (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:43pm

355 - you missed out "and a coach with a dubious reputation for game management".

I have no idea what to expect from these Colts any more. But if Manning can ride his D to a superbowl ring the irrational thread might actually explode.

362
by Daniel (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:44pm

Belichick has gone all conservative in the playoffs - there were a few 4th and 1 punts last week too. Leaving aside my general distate for 4th and 1 punting, I think in this case he's really asking for too many miracles from his defense.

363
by Dave (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:45pm

355: baltimore has a great running back? when did this happen?

the ravens have their offensive strengths, but the chargers are at least a little superior in every position, except maybe WR.

come on, vincent jackson, you gotta hold on to that ball.

364
by jonnyblazin (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:45pm

Man these SD wideouts really suck.

365
by The Other Jed (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:45pm

Wow, given the constant flood of bile NE fans save for Indy, I'd hate to see the apoplexy if the Colts actually beat the Patriots in the postseason.

366
by Rocco (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:45pm

If you're Philip Rivers, at what point do you attack your WRs with a baseball bat?

367
by Compucrazy (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:46pm

WTF is going on? The chargers receivers look like they've never been hit before. That drop was pathetic.

368
by Daniel (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:49pm

Maybe the Pats should start punting on 3rd and 10

369
by Raskolnikov (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:49pm

Rivers has actually played a decent game so far. These drops by the SD receivers are pretty terrible - zero difficulty and drive killers.

370
by Moridin (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:49pm

Nice vertical... maybe SD should use its DBs as receivers too. They seem like they can catch.

371
by Rocco (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:50pm

Maybe the Chargers should play Florence at WR.

372
by Gordon (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:50pm

Re 325:

Love the Firefly reference.

373
by Trogdor (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:52pm

I think this is how it should play out. The Colts win next week 14-3, so we get two more weeks of people coming up with reasons their defense really isn't playing very well (pick either "well, it's Martyball! He always chokes!" or "Brady just has no receivers! What do you expect?"). They advance to the Super Bowl and play the Bears. Train Rex shows up, the Colts pitch a shutout, and score three defensive TDs. The Chicago defense plays incredibly well and holds the Colts to two FGs on offense. So the Colts win the Super Bowl, Manning sheds the stupid labels (without having a single amazing game), and people still ridicule the defense despite them allowing only 17 points in four games.

374
by Raskolnikov (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:52pm

That INT could be a killer. Brady threw up a duck.

375
by Raskolnikov (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:54pm

Rivers is doing a pretty good imitation of Brady with these sneaks.

376
by Moridin (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:55pm

Well, at least he didn't drop it I suppose, but for the love, drag your damn feet.

377
by Peter Libero (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:55pm

Jesus. You are an NFL receiver, drag your toes. This is atrocious by the San Diego WRs.

378
by Rocco (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:55pm

Is it cold in SD? Why are the refs wearing long sleeves?

379
by Trogdor (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:56pm

Do the Chargers consider trading up for CJ or Jarrett or some other receiver who doesn't completely and totally suck?

380
by Rocco (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:57pm

Any chance TMQ mentions the Pats blitz on 3rd down?

381

385
by Ilanin (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:57pm

If San Diego lose this, Rivers has to go out into the press conference and say "I'm trying to be a good teammate here...lets just say we had some catching problems."

386
by Raskolnikov (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 8:58pm

391

Yes, the sport has a history of right-wing philosophy. If I recall correctly -- and I'd like to think I do -- Phil Simms double majored in history and political science.

394
by David (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:01pm

The chargers have a lot of weird yellow lines on their field, which I keep mistaking for the first down marker (and I'm not even drinking or anything). Is that intentional?

395
by Raskolnikov (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:01pm

This has all the makings of the classic 12 play 98 drive Brady Drive. I'm predicting a score for the Pats here.

And a damn good thing that Brady has receivers who catch the ball. It's enough to make you feel sorry for Rivers.

411
by Not saying (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:04pm

If Graham had just run forward and blocked a LB instead of blocking Faulk, that might have been a 1st down.

Or, they could just recover a muffed punt. Guess that one's better.

412
by Peter Libero (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:04pm

Eric Parker.... I mean, do they just cut him right now? Demand their money back from his contract? Is there any recourse here?

413
by Trogdor (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:05pm

Was that one of San Diego's receivers fielding that punt? Of course it was. What a terrible play.

The pile-up afterwards was a little bit chippy. I love how the officials would pull players off, and they'd try to hop back into it. They really need to throw flags on guys who do that kind of junk.

So, is grabbing the guy running by you by the neck a legal blocking technique?

418
by Harris (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:09pm

Shouldn't that be illegal touching since a lineman caught the ball?

419
by Ilanin (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:09pm

Haaaang on. Mankins is a frickin' GUARD. How did he get called for OPI? (I can't see the game, this is an honest question).

420
by B (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:09pm

Nice catch by Matt Light.

421
by Not saying (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:09pm

Shouldn't that have been illegal man downfield if he's past the line of scrimmage? How could it be pass intereference?

422
by Marko (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:09pm

What a stupid personal foul!!

423
by Dave (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:09pm

florence, you horse's ass

424
by Moridin (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:09pm

Unnecessary roughness?!?! Maybe taunting

425
by Tom Kelso (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:10pm

Apparently he grabbed someone by the neck in the vicinity of the pass?

426
by johnt (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:10pm

What the hell? He didn't headbutt him, he got up in the Pats' guys face and the Pats fans shoved him in the helmet.

427
by Harris (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:10pm

Drayton Florence is the defense's Eric Parker.

428
by Rocco (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:10pm

Do the Chargers actually want to win this game? I mean, really? If so, could they play like it?

429
by hector (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:11pm

Looks like Graham gave Florence a good shot too. But Florence is an idiot for acting that way and costing his team.

430
by Jin (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:11pm

The fix is in for Pats/Colts!!!!! j/k.

431
by jonnyblazin (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:11pm

Marty has done a good job getting his players in place to make plays this game. Unfortunately the Chargers just seem to be a bunch of undisiplined, nervous jackasses.

432
by The Ref (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:12pm

This game has totally bogged down. Get LT back on the field.

433
by Ilanin (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:12pm

Mankins isn't going to let SD win this penalty contest without a fight...

434
by Tom Kelso (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:12pm

Is this like the Billy Volek trade -- the Pats traded Mankins to San Diego for Eric Parker, and they can't swap unis until after the game, maybe?

435
by Dave (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:12pm

it was incidental contact, not a real head butt, but florence is an idiot for engaging at all after the play.

brady's not throwing well at all today.

436
by goathead (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:13pm

The personal foul call was totally bogus, but hey ya gotta expect the pats to get some bogus calls in the playoffs...

436
by Compucrazy (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:13pm

if the Chargers blow this, and it's looking pretty likely. Does this get added to the list of classic Schottenheimer playoff games?

438
by Jin (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:14pm

What the hell is wrong with Brady? At this point if it is Pats/Colts the Manning/Brady stat line is gonna be 50%, 300yds, 0TDs, 6INTs.

439
by Ilanin (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:14pm

I don't see how it can be, 437. The Chargers aren't playing at all like a Schottenheimer team. A Schottenheimer-coached team is first and foremost going to get the fundamentals right and not make dumbass mistakes - this isn't a Marty-based choke. Or at least, not a normal one.

440
by John (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:14pm

Re: 428 Man, no kidding. They certainly look like they have the superior talent, but boy are they trying to give this game away.

440
by Tom Kelso (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:14pm

And after a 7-play, 15-yard drive, NE finally kicks a figgie.

This could set football back about 50 years.

442
by Thomas L. (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:15pm

The third quarter ending like the 1st. As a Pats fan, hoping the 4th doesn't look like the 2nd.

443
by goathead (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:15pm

437 - You betcha. Marty is trying not to be Marty going for it on 4th & 11 and learns that sometimes its ok to be conservative...

444
by goathead (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:16pm

Let it never be said that Marty can't find new ways to lose in the playoffs.

445
by Trogdor (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:18pm

The OPI was because he wasn't just downfield, he was blocking guys in the secondary before the pass was thrown. It would be the same as a receiver setting a pick.

Graham gave Florence a good shove, but Florence had gone out of his way to get the official's attention with his chicken dance beforehand. It was just a stupid play, where the best result he could hope for was offsetting fouls.

On the replay where Merriman got hurt (why didn't the Pats snap the ball, or jump, when he was clearly offsides?), it looked like his left leg was about twice as thick as his right. I will leave the punchline out here, in deference to Charger fans who are easily offended by pointing out that their players who got caught using steroids use steroids.

Vinatieri wouldn't've kicked that one out of bounds.

446
by hector (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:18pm

Wondering why the Chargers don't run many screens to LT. His pass-catching fell off in the second half of the year, and IIRC neither first-half catch was on a screen.

447
by Ilanin (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:18pm

Stephen Gostkowski just wins. Or so it seems. Is this really all as incompetent as the pbp makes it seem?

448
by John (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:19pm

Re:437 If they loose, I can't see it being pinned on Marty. Sometimes undisciplined, nervous play is the coaches fault, and sometimes it's just a team on the youngish side without any playoff experience.

What I want to know is, how am I supposed to watch this game and 24 at the same time??

449
by Daniel (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:19pm

As a Pats fan, I should be quite optimistic now - 1 pt deficit going into the 4th quarter. But I just can't imagine any scenario in which the Pats outscore the Chargers from here on out. The defense can't keep pulling stops out of their ass indefinitely

450

461
by Trogdor (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:23pm

Did someone put a tree stump on the Chargers' sideline? Parker was taking a few swings with the axe earlier, but now they're passing it around like they're trying to break a pinata.

462
by Dave (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:24pm

463
by Rocco (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:24pm

464
by James, London (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:25pm

My God, the Chargers are going to be sore if they blow this.

This game should be over already, but I'm getting an ominous feeling that Gostkowski wins it as time expires.

465
by Thomas L. (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:25pm

Rivers finally made a mistake. Very good overall for a first time in the playoffs.

If SD fires Marty here, then SD management is an a**.

I now have NE favored, as without a great pass rush, Brady should burn the SD DBs.

466
by Jeff W (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:25pm

Somewhere on the Charger sidleine, Kiefer is yelling, "Come on! WE'RE RUNNING OUT OF TIME!!!!"

469
by stan (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:26pm

If SD loses, mark it down to the brain dead move to go with prevent at the end of the first half. With 3 timeouts and 2 minutes, an offense can easily get off 10-12 plays. Which means that 72 yards can be covered easily if the defense is giving up 6-10 yards per play, run or pass.

Since SD had completely dominated the Pats for 28 minutes playing regular defense, why go prevent with that much time left and NE with 3 TOs. That's just brain dead stupid.

470
by Compucrazy (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:26pm

471
by The Phil (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:26pm

I sometimes think of the Pats as a boring dynasty, but many of their playoff games come down to the wire. So why would they seem so boring?

Think of the biggest plays in the recent Pats Super Bowls. They're all field goals, right? Where's the spectacular, memorable play?

So, I looked it up. In their three Super Bowl wins, the longest Patriots offensive TD is...eight yards.

EIGHT YARDS! Brady to Patten against the Rams.

They can certainly put together excellent drives. But that is astounding.

472
by James, London (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:26pm

When do the Chargers decide to get tight on Gaffney?

473
by sonofbrocklanders (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:27pm

great break on the ball by cromartie. i like gaffney's posturing about pi despite his being out of bounds--that was sweet.

476
by stan (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:28pm

Phil talks about Brady being under pressure. Then NBC shows him making bad throw after bad throw with no pressure at all.

477
by Trogdor (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:30pm

472: Gaffney played for Florida. Under the new laws of postseason football, all Florida receivers must be given 12-yard cushions on all plays, even if the throw will never go more than 8 yards downfield.

478
by Tom Kelso (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:30pm

What a stupid punt.

482
by Thomas L. (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:32pm

469 - that, and 4th and 11, and 4th and 4

OK, I guess Marty has cost them at least a touchdown here. Only Parker has done more to help NE.

Did Belichick just make a DVOA error on 4th and 2? I'd have gone for it, considering.

483

485
by Rocco (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:33pm

481-

I didn't mind the punt, but why call a TO there? Take the 5 yards, and save a TO since it looks like you might need it here. And if you're going to draw a guy offsides, line up under center with as much time on the playclock as possible, not in the shotgun.

486

490

Um..... did the Pats have their secondary take a play off there? Too bad Gates didn't realize how much room he had - if he could've stayed in bounds, he had another 10 yards at least.

491
by hector (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:35pm

492
by Trogdor (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:35pm

493
by jonnyblazin (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:36pm

Eric Parker stands there like a statue instead of coming back to the ball, allowing Samuel to make a play on it.

495
by stan (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:36pm

506
by Rocco (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:41pm

SD scores, and takes a dumb unsportsmanlike penalty to back up the kickoff. Brilliant. If this team could get out of their own way this game would be over. As it is, they're setting themselves up for Brady to win the game and give us neutrals a week of nauseating hype.

507

508
by Trogdor (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:41pm

496: Well, I think we can pretty much write most of it (except for the intro, idiotic social commentary, and dubious science sections). But I assume you're talking about the section where the Pats punt on 4th and 1, and it takes SD only x plays to advance the ball to where they'd have gotten it if NE had tried and failed. Oh, and the chicken punt showed Belichick had no confidence in his team, which they returned by allowing the TD.

509
by James, London (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:42pm

510

What's with the stupid, dumbass penalties? And how come they don't call them when the Pats do that stuff?

SD -- drop on the easiest, softest INT there will ever be. So many dropped passes you'd think they were trying out for the Seahawks. Stupid penalties. Stupid passes. Stupid taking sacks to get out of FG range.

Have you ever seen more butterfingers and more stupid plays by a team that could still win?

511
by Thomas L. (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:43pm

Brady was picked off, the defender bobbled it, and then when he was hit by troy brown, he fumbled. caldwell dived on the ball.

by Marko (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:50pm

TMQ has lots of things to write about this week - Philly not going for it on 4th down, Seattle with some questionable play calling, pretty much everything about this game . . .

542
by B (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:50pm

San Deigo should stop letting Parker play defense.

543
by Ken (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:51pm

I can't see the game... but let me guess. The Chargers are in dark, not electric blue?

That would explain TMQs football gods.

Smart move by Watson there telling Graham to get on the line.

Yeah the Patriots got incredibly lucky there.

Sometimes random luck is all you need.

What happened to Brady's accuracy this year?

550
by Trogdor (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:52pm

How many years has it been since Troy Brown has been "unsung"? How many "Troy Brown for MVP" articles have been written the past few years because he filled in at nickleback? Nantz, if you could pick only one word to describe Brown, "unsung" should be well near the bottom of the list.

Memo to Chargers- cover Jabar Gaffney.

What would the over/under be on interceptions if Manning and Brady played in the same game next week?

Six? Seven? Eight?

553

Go for 2. Go Go Go.

If the Pats somehow pull out this game I'm seriously skipping the AFC championship game in protest.

Same Brady that's always been.

Wow. How do you not see the run coming?

558
by Randy S. (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:55pm

A direct snap to Faulk? I'm no Pats fan, but that was a ballsy call.

560
by Thomas L. (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:55pm

May the Farce go with you.

561
by B (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:55pm

The Patriots used that same two point conversion play in SB 38.

562
by Marko (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:56pm

Lots of Keep Choppin' Wood candidates, too. If the Chargers lose, Marlon McCree probably should win, but the Eagles offensive lineman who false started on 4th and 10 and Andy Reid (for punting after that) will be in contention.

563
by The Other Jed (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:56pm

And it's tied. Parity may make for mediocre teams, but it makes for close playoff games.

564
by Raskolnikov (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:56pm

This may be the most lopsided 21-21 game I've ever seen.

565
by Jeremy Billones (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:56pm

Jack Bauer can roll all over the Chinese, but he's no match for Belicheck, apparently.

566
by stan (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:56pm

Caldwell's OPI on the TD was as bad as you will see. Grabbed the DB and threw him inside to get open outside.

And catching that kickoff is another brain dead move.

Is it unfair to say Belichick and Brady have some sort of pact with the devil? I mean I don't usually believe in curses, but my god this is brutal to watch.

570
by Marko (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:59pm

Has there ever been two OT playoff games on the same day? I know there's still plenty of time left, but how exciting would that be?

Disclaimer : I'm a 49ers fan not a Pats fan

Would everybody stop with the "Patriots are so lucky" comments. Luck doesn't last for the period that they've been a good team.

572
by Trogdor (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 9:59pm

Another drop, and all Simms can talk about is what an imposing figure the receiver is. Of course, he has the same hands as another famous figure, the Venus de Milo.

for the love of pete, its gonna be bad enough to lose this game with stupid mistakes but to lose it to *reche effing caldwell*...

578
by Bill (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 10:08pm

Of course it's not luck - it's the amazing clutchiness of Torre and Jeter.

579
by vijay (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 10:08pm

This is not good for the folks who wanted the Chargers going forward. I think I'm at the point where I'm tired of seeing the Pats in the SB again so if they end up taking this, I'll have to cheer for the Colts, and I hate doing that... Oh well...

580

Pats kicker gonna miss it.

maybe the football gods are just setting it up to have gotkowski miss the potential game winner. after vinetieri's day yesterday that would be glorious

SD have one chance left, and you can guarantee they'll blow it. And then the entire site will be locked up with WordPress errors all friggin' week. Marvellous.

588
by stan (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 10:11pm

The SD people are going to be bitching up a storm about the refs. They get all the flags, but when the Pats slap helmets, etc. -- no call. PI on the TD. Oh they are going to be going off.

By the way, you run for 6 yards on first down with just under 5 minutes. Why pass on 2d and 3d downs? You want the ball in LT's hands or Rivers'? Stupid.

589
by pr9000 (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 10:11pm

585 -- that last part is all coaching. :)

590
by Dave (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 10:12pm

i just have to say, it'd be very in keeping with the eff-ups this game has been riddled with for gostkowski to honk this kick

591
by cd6 (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 10:12pm

If the chargers lose somebody better put Marty on suicide watch

If he didn't win it with this team, he's just not going to.

592
by vijay (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 10:12pm

Maybe it's time for the holder to drop the ball, ala, Tony Romo. Maybe it's a problem that affects Parcells and his family, like Pioli...

593
by TBW (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 10:13pm

how many times does my 9 year old have to watch commericials for shows or movies about serial killers ? I hate friggin Hollywood. It is literally not safe to let you kids watch the NFL alone, you have to watch it with them to pause and skip the commercials.

594

580-You're a moron.

595
by Thomas L. (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 10:14pm

Odss way in favor of NE here. But a whole lot of against-the-odds things happening today.

NE winning today because Belichick too smart to try to run just because the talking heads want them to run. 2.7 per carry. Then don't run except to burn time.

But with LT on field, it ain't over til it's over.

596
by James, London (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 10:14pm

I thought that the Pats would botch the snap, and somehow Cassel would throw for a TD. It's been that sort of night.

What wacky screw-up can the Chargers come up with in the time left?

597
by stan (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 10:14pm

593, Amen.

598
by B (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 10:14pm

588: before the game started, I thought the Chargers best chance for victory would be to play "Mattyball" run often and pass only when necessary. It seems as though Marty decided to go against type and put the game in the hands of Rivers.

599
by Dave (not verified) :: Sun, 01/14/2007 - 10:14pm

ok, on this drive, use lt in the slot. he's awesome after the catch.

Did anyone mention the great decision by SD to take their last timeout before the 2-minute warning, to save 15 seconds instead of 40?
