The DJ Years
(or, if I have to backsell that Bush track one more time I'm gonna hurt somebody)

Here I am at the WBRU Holiday Hipster Bash in December 1995.  I enjoyed the black and white Santa hats that said "Bah Humbug."  You may recognize the man in the middle as Art Alexakis of Everclear, who headlined the show.  The rest of these folks from left to right: two unknown record promo folks, former WBRU program director Alexa Tobin (from whom I got the habit of ending every memo or email with the phrase "Rock On."), Alexakis, fellow WBRU DJ Steph Hindley (who went on to run a station in Vermont for six years but now is raising a family), yours truly in the shadows, and WBRU promo director Rachel Salomon.

Since I was the morning jock at the time, I got to do most of the intros at the show.  Here I am before Everclear, throwing dreidels into the crowd at the Strand Theatre.  Hey, it's a holiday show but I'm Jewish, I got to do things my way.  You haven't lived until hundreds of kids are screaming and begging you to throw them cheap plastic dreidels.

Here I am in the studio with Poe, one of the many one-hit wonder artists of the mid-90's whose music fueled my WBRU heyday.  She was pretty cool interview though, the only performer I interviewed twice.  As you can tell from the pictures on this page, I definitely favored hockey jerseys during my radio days.  The other people in this picture are one of Poe's bandmates on the left, and two WBRU promotional folks on the right, I think the long-haired guy as named Jeff Berger and for the life of me I cannot remember who the girl is.

After WBRU it was off to Daytona Beach and WKRO.  Of course, you work Daytona, your three biggest weeks of the year are Spring Break.  Here I am on stage at the Ocean Deck bar, where I did giveaways every day for three weeks in between sets by a local reggae band.  By "giveaways" I basically mean free condoms, suntan lotion packets, and phone cards.  Apparently, college students live on those three items alone.  And beer.

More rock stars.  Here I am at the 1997 Warped Tour in Orlando with Dicky Barrett of the Mighty Mighty Bosstones.  Ah, a taste of home!  They held the Warped Tour in a parking lot of a shopping center, which had to be the worst concert venue ever conceived.. There are some advantages to working at a radio station in Daytona Beach.
