The Saints took a chance on veteran linebacker Dan Morgan, signing the former Panthers All-Pro to a one-year, $1.48 million contract on the offseason. This was to be part of New Orleans' defensive overhaul, as Morgan projected to compete with Scott Shanle on the weak side. That was the fantasy. The reality, for those who were familiar with Morgan's injury history -- he never managed to play all 16 games of a season, he had a hard time recovering from a 2007 Achilles' tendon injury, and his concussion history is truly worrisome -- was that this was a guy who really needed to think about hanging 'em up. He was a warrior in the middle of Carolina's defense for a long time, and hopefully he'll be rewarded for his service with a happy and healthy post-football life. The Saints hope to have better luck with their other former Miami linebacker off-season acquisition, ex-Jet Jonathan Vilma, who's recovering from a knee injury.
