Week 17 Quick Reads

by Aaron Schatz

Traditionally, for the last week of the year, Quick Reads is a rundown of the best and worst players of the season by DYAR, rather than analysis of Week 17. Vince Verhei is writing that article for tomorrow. For those of you who want to see Week 17, however, here are the tables with the best and worst DYAR totals for the final week of the season. You will all have to provide the commentary yourselves, as we're all busy with 100,000 other end-of-season tasks.

Tables with full-season stats will be up later today, along with full-season DVOA ratings and commentary.

If nothing else tells you how bad the Bears D is, the fact they lost a game in which Cutler was the 5th best QB by DYAR and Forte was the best RB should seal the discussion.

I need to know, is this the worst Run D by DVOA ever charted?

2
by JoeHova :: Mon, 12/30/2013 - 2:24pm

Somebody mentioned in quick reads that the run d is bad, but not historically bad.

4
by Charlotte (not verified) :: Mon, 12/30/2013 - 2:50pm

The 2008 Lions and Rams were both much, much worse.

10
by tuluse :: Mon, 12/30/2013 - 4:35pm

Teams which went a combined 2-30.

I think the Bears rush defense problems have been magnified because they are otherwise a good team.

6
by Will Allen :: Mon, 12/30/2013 - 3:00pm

You'll lose a lot more games when you give up uncontested tds by quitting on plays with the ball on the ground.

11
by Eddo :: Mon, 12/30/2013 - 5:43pm

I get this is somewhat tongue-in-cheek, but I wouldn't read anything from that play.

Twenty-one of the twenty-two players on the field quit on that play. Even the guy who picked up the ball, Boykin. Watch it again - he picks it up, then just stands there. Only Aaron Rodgers showed any awareness that it was a live ball, and only after half the Packers' sideline was screaming at Boykin to run.

It was just a fluke play.

12
by tuluse :: Mon, 12/30/2013 - 6:48pm

Hey, *I* was yelling at the TV. Also, I immediately thought how disappointed Lovie would have been with the entire defense on that play. 11 loafs on that play.

13
by Eddo :: Mon, 12/30/2013 - 7:00pm

Oh sure, it was extremely disappointing. But treating it as some sort of indicator - when, for the most part, the Bears have been "recovering" every loose ball, even incomplete passes thirty yards downfield - is going too far.

Tucker should really lose his job, though. I won't argue with that. He's not 100% responsible for the defensive drop-off, but unfortunately, there needs to be a shakeup when you go from having a great defense to a poor one.

by Charles Jake (not verified) :: Tue, 12/31/2013 - 10:33am

It's really galling that the Bears lost a game where Cutler soundly outplayed Rodgers. And since they lost due to Cutler's refusal to play safety, the narrative will continue to be that he "just can't beat Green Bay."

23
by Will Allen :: Tue, 12/31/2013 - 11:05am

I bet Cutler could have kept Rodgers in the pocket, if he just would gave gotten his lazy rear end off the bench!

24
by tuluse :: Tue, 12/31/2013 - 11:20am

Even worse, I didn't see him move one muscle to try and recover the fumble.

3
by RickD :: Mon, 12/30/2013 - 2:43pm

Is Brady's punt factored into his DVOA?

17
by MJK :: Tue, 12/31/2013 - 12:29am

Well, it was kind of a crappy punt, so it probably doesn't matter.

25
by Bobman :: Tue, 12/31/2013 - 2:54pm

Did Flutie make the free kick he attempted a decade ago in week 17? That Belichick, he's a zany one.

5
by EricL :: Mon, 12/30/2013 - 2:55pm

Is this the first time all year a Seahawk receiver appeared in the top 5?

7
by Vince Verhei :: Mon, 12/30/2013 - 3:26pm

No. Doug Baldwin was 5th in Week 13 against NO. (Four catches, five targets, 77 yards, 1 TD)

They've come close three other times. Sydney Rice was 8th in Week 3. Tate was 7th in Week 10. Baldwin was 7th in Week 11.

8
by pm :: Mon, 12/30/2013 - 3:36pm

Did Pryor make it to 7th this solely on his garbage time performance? His 2 TD's came when his team was down 34-0 in the 4th quarter

9
by Vince Verhei :: Mon, 12/30/2013 - 3:52pm

Pryor's passing DYAR by quarter: -45, -4, -2, 110. He led all passers in fourth-quarter DYAR this week.

20
by eggwasp (not verified) :: Tue, 12/31/2013 - 8:30am

clutch!

14
by N8- (not verified) :: Mon, 12/30/2013 - 7:35pm

I could tell that Rodgers was not going to do well on DVOA early in the game, but I'm surprised that he still ended up below replacement. The red zone INT was a killer, but the Packers had long drives and eventual scores. Any breakdown by quarter on his DVOA? Thanks! I'm impressed this data came out today already!

15
by tuluse :: Mon, 12/30/2013 - 7:38pm

Remember, this is defense adjusted, and the Packers did really well running the ball.

16
by Vince Verhei :: Mon, 12/30/2013 - 11:59pm

Any breakdown by quarter on his DVOA?

-48, -70, 13, 92. He had two interceptions, and that one wonky touchdown goes down as a fumble for Rodgers (hich, technically, it was) and a big chunk of negative DYAR.

18
by Paul M (not verified) :: Tue, 12/31/2013 - 2:06am

And nobody from Kenosha County north gives a hoot.... Down 8 in the 4th Quarter on the road against your biggest rival....hadn't played in nearly two months... 87 yards from the goal line on the last drive... 3 4th down conversions... a historically memorable final play involving a player who had been out even longer than the QB.... Having said all that though, if they get throttled Sunday, which would be their fourth straight loss to SF, and Rodgers plays only average, the glow from the Bears win will not linger long as the defensive deficiencies and overall doubts about this team grow... BUT-- who is the better stand-in for 10-6 GB Wild Card in 2010, or 9-7 NY 2011, or Baltimore last year? The candidates in terms of recent performance, since none of those teams had a long positive run up to the playoffs, would seem to be the Packers, Chargers and possibly Saints or Colts... The other teams either have much better records (Seattle/Denver/New England/San Francisco/Carolina) or have been playing better longer (Philly and Cincinnati) or were too good earlier in the year (Kansas City). San Diego and GB seem the better matches, and I don't believe in either one of them, which probably means at least one makes it to Giants Stadium....

19
by Brad M (not verified) :: Tue, 12/31/2013 - 2:21am

paragraphs please

21
by Hurt Bones :: Tue, 12/31/2013 - 10:03am

And enough with the ellipses. Is there really that much redacted from that rather large comment?

26
by Bobman :: Tue, 12/31/2013 - 3:00pm

Oh come on... I don't know (well maybe I do)((Not sure--will get back to you on that one!))... I think it adds to the narrative flow... the je ne sais quoi (or whatever) and helps deliver a truly impactful, cogent... even coherent comment without all that wasteful empty space left by widows and orphans (typography terms probably long extinct)... you know, now that I re-read this (oh my eyes!) (yours too? Sorry!) I am beginning to see your point, though William Faulkner and Gabriel Garcia-Marquez may not... if you see what I mean.

Okay, new paragraph, just to see how it works.... waiting... still waiting... Okay, I see no real positive impact from that second graf. You have to admit, it didn't really help. Oh my God, have the playoffs started yet?

27
by LionInAZ :: Tue, 12/31/2013 - 6:06pm

I really think your 2nd paragraph leaves me with a profound and vivid insight into, er... whatever the first paragraph was about!

31
by dbostedo :: Tue, 12/31/2013 - 6:55pm

So you're saying that Bobman wrote that because under his mean, callous, heartless exterior, he just really wants to be loved?

28
by LionInAZ :: Tue, 12/31/2013 - 6:32pm

It doesn't matter. He's just trying to fake out the FOMBC. He doesn't realize that the FOMBC knows all and sees all.

The one catch is Nick Bradley trying to invoke the reverse FOMBC on the 49ers. Who knows what might happen when their opposed FOMBCs collide?

29
by tuluse :: Tue, 12/31/2013 - 6:40pm

A FOMBC divided against itself cannot stand!

30
by JoeyHarringtonsPiano :: Tue, 12/31/2013 - 6:40pm

"The one catch is Nick Bradley trying to invoke the reverse FOMBC on the 49ers. Who knows what might happen when their opposed FOMBCs collide?"

I worry that it may result in a catastrophic explosion, like matter and anti-matter colliding.

32
by LionInAZ :: Tue, 12/31/2013 - 7:28pm

Or worse -- we could end up in a bizarro universe with Schiano and TB against the Browns in the Super Bowl.

34
by JoeyHarringtonsPiano :: Tue, 12/31/2013 - 10:18pm

Worse? In that bizarro universe, the Ford family would be like the Rooneys, and the Lions would have several superbowl rings. Joey Harrington would be their latest superstar quarterback, still playing well into his 30's, and married to a famous lingerie model.

Bring on the bizarro universe!

35
by LionInAZ :: Tue, 12/31/2013 - 11:38pm

I didn't say those teams would actually be good in that universe...

33
by Karl Cuba :: Tue, 12/31/2013 - 7:57pm

I don't think he's trying to fake out the curse, he's put up several fanposts on Niners Nation like this. I've tried to placate the Ineffable Forces of Impending Retribution but I fear they will ignore my pleas and strike the niners down anyway, alas.

36
by Will Allen :: Wed, 01/01/2014 - 2:45am

This is why I always keep a few chicken bones and some incense handy.

37

I thought that was just a good single malt.

38

A half liter of Moskovskaya and a few lines of coke might work better.
