Pro Football Prospectus 2005 was the first PFP written by Football Outsiders, but it wasn't actually the first edition of the book. Although most people aren't aware of it, there was a book called Pro Football Prospectus produced in both 2002 and 2003, with a different group of authors.
In 2004, we were asked to collaborate with the previous authors on the book that would be Pro Football Prospectus 2004. Al Bogdan, Russell Levine, Aaron Schatz, and Michael David Smith all wrote essays, then handed the editing off to others. By the time the book came out, it was weeks late, it was now named Pro Football Forecast 2004, and it received very little promotion or attention.
We get a lot of questions about the 2004 book. After all, it contains Football Outsiders content that has never been published anywhere else, as well as updates of articles that appeared on our website during the 2003 season, when most current FO readers were not even aware of our existence. The book is almost impossible to find in stores, and if you want to buy a used copy online, the shipping costs end up being higher than the price of the book itself.
Luckily, on the Internet we can share the content with the readers without having to actually print it on paper. Now, for the low price of six dollars, you can read all of the material written by the Football Outsiders staff for the book that ended up in stores as Pro Football Forecast 2004. It's a great look into the early days of our research and the development of our style.
