VN: Defensive Line Stats and Uncle Gary

by Bill Connelly

A few weeks ago, I took a look at line stats and what they told us about some of college football's best offensive lines. I figured I needed to do take a look at the defensive side of the ball at some point before the end of the season, but after CBS' Gary Danielson mentioned Adjusted Sack Rate on-air late in the Alabama-LSU game, I'll go ahead and do that now.

What did Danielson say? After an Alabama sack, with the game out of hand, he mentioned that Alabama ranks 116th in Adjusted Sack Rate. He explained it wrong ("That means for the number of times thrown, they don't get very many sacks," which is the "sack rate" part of it, but the "Adjusted" part is adjusting for opponent as well) and admitted that he hadn't heard of the stat until about an hour before (presumably a production assistant reads FO and/or SB Nation), but he still broke it out, and I'll take it.

Alabama's performance on Saturday did nothing to move the needle either way; the Tide still rank 116th in ASR, a strangely low ranking even for a team that rarely sells out blitzing.

Anyway, below is another data dump. Again, here are some of the key definitions. Unlike last time, I'm going ahead and including the adjusted ratings for Line Yards and Sack Rates (once again, those are on the "100 = average" scale), but the other stats are unadjusted for opponent.

  • Line Yards: line yards per carry. This is not adjusted for opponent -- I figured it might make more sense to have all the numbers either adjusted or unadjusted in this regard. (I will provide adjusted numbers later on.) Garbage time is filtered out.
  • Power Success Rate: As defined on the pro OL page, "Percentage of runs on third or fourth down, two yards or less to go, that achieved a first down or touchdown. Also includes runs on first-and-goal or second-and-goal from the two-yard line or closer. This is the only statistic on this page that includes quarterbacks."
  • Stuffed: Again, as defined on the pro OL page, "Percentage of runs where the running back is tackled at or behind the line of scrimmage. Since being stuffed is bad, teams are ranked from stuffed least often (#1) to most often" (#125).
  • Sack Rate: Percentage of pass (passes + sacks) that resulted in a sack. Again, garbage time is filtered out. And as with line yards, these numbers are unadjusted for opponent.
  • Standard Downs Sack Rate: Sack rate on standard downs only. (Garbage time is filtered out.)
  • Passing Downs Sack Rate: Sack rate on passing downs only. (Garbage time is filtered out.)

Not surprisingly, the teams with the best averages in Adj. Line Yards are among the teams with the best overall defenses; Michigan State, Virginia Tech, Alabama, Florida, Penn State, and Iowa are all among the top 10 in this category, and at a casual glance, that makes a lot of sense. But Memphis is fifth, Arizona State is sixth, Utah State is seventh, and bucking stereotype, Baylor is 11th, tied with Stanford and just ahead of BYU. Baylor has gotten awfully strong, awfully quickly in the trenches. It's a scary thought for the rest of the Big 12.

There are plenty of good defenses around the top of the Adj. Sack Rate rankings as well, but it's a little more high-variance, a little less tied to overall quality. This makes sense since teams are still mostly run-first on standard downs and most sacks come on passing downs.

If nothing else, this clues you in on how Virginia Tech ends up ranked so high in both components of F/+ (S&P+ and FEI). The Hokies can defend, especially up front. Now if only that offense could play as well in dry weather as in a rainstorm (it was wet when they racked up 549 yards and 42 points against Miami last Saturday).

In your article on Fresno State and Northern Illinois, it seems like the big problem with the BCS isn't so much whether the mid-majors deserve to be in but that the automatic qualifying conferences shouldn't automatically qualify. They would never go for it, but I don't think it unreasonable for the major conferences to require a team be in the top 20 (or some other number between 15-25) to be in a BCS bowl game. Somebody may have mentioned that in the comments, but I can't read them right now because they can't get beyond the firewall at work.

I'm surprised Oregon is only as low as 50 after Stanford implemented that rule change where 3rd-2 becomes an automatic first down.

Though their power success rate does (predictably) stink...
