The Week In Quotes: October 26, 2012

compiled by Rivers McCown

SUGGESTION ONE: NOT CALLING REPORTERS "SWEETHEART"

"The past couple of games have been the same script, by the same director. It's kind of getting boring. This taste, this vibe—I'm not buying it, man. And I don't know what it is, but something's going to have to change. Something's going to have to change real fast. I'm going to leave this room and I'm going to bring in a suggestion box and I want your suggestions to be in that suggestion box because I sure don't know. I really don't. I wish I could tell you. But the only thing I control, sweetheart, is myself. Offensively, I am the leader of this bunch and we haven't been getting the job done." -- Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, on his unit's performance this year (Deadspin)

IT'S LIKE THEY'D ALREADY CHECKED INTO THE CITRUS BOWL IN ADVANCE

"After the first series [against Kentucky], I told everybody we played too soft. They got the ball at the 20 and went 80 yards right up the middle. I came to the sideline and said ‘y’all are playing soft.’ It gets frustrating because I’m sitting here and I’m giving all I got and I feel like I’ve got some guys that are not. I feel we’ve got some guys that are in a whole different place." -- Georgia safety Shawn Williams, on Georgia's "attitude problems" on defense (Atlanta Journal-Constitution)

AND IF STEELERS BACKS KEEP GETTING HURT, WE MAY SEE THAT PUT TO THE TEST

"Man, a llama could have scored through THAT hole!" -- Steelers running back Chris Rainey, on his 11-yard touchdown on Sunday night (Twitter)

CORRELATION? THAT'S AN AWFULLY BIG WORD FOR A UNC FOOTBALL PLAYER

"It's different than what was described to me during the game. It was full speed, and there was no intent to avoid. We were going to turn it in but we understand now that the conference office is looking at it, and I'll be interested to see what they say. People have seen it, you've seen it on television, I've just never seen anything quite like it. I was amazed when I saw that this morning. I don't know, I'm kind of speechless about it. I've never had that happen in my entire career. Very unusual." -- Duke head coach David Cutcliffe, on a blatantly cheap hit by UNC's Shakeel Rashad. Rashad would later be suspended for a game (News Observer)

"I suggested that they consider that this isn’t an isolated incident, and I expressed my disappointment considering everything that had been going on for the last year. And I received a great deal of assurances that it would be handled." -- UNC instructor J. Nikol Beckham, on football player Erik Highsmith plagiarizing a post from an 11-year-old (News Observer)

WHICH IS GOOD, BECAUSE ALL THE ROCKET SCIENTISTS ARE BUSY TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW D'ANGELO HALL WASN'T THE ONE GETTING BURNED DEEP

"It wasn't something [where] he was just a rocket scientist and he just figured [it] out. We just played that as bad as possible." -- Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall, on Eli Manning's long touchdown to Victor Cruz that sealed a Giants win (Washington Times)

"I appreciate him giving it to me. I don't think it took a rocket scientist either. A guy was running open and I hit him." -- Manning, on Hall's comments (Twitter)

SOME WOULD CALL HIM ANTI-FREE SPEECH; OTHERS WOULD NOTE THAT HE SAVED THE WORLD FROM 800 "RISE AND GRIND"S

"Twitter’s now banned around here, so don’t expect anything on Twitter. Twitter’s banned and quite frankly, if after today you see anything on Twitter from our team — and I don’t care if it says, 'I love life' — I would like to see it, because I will suspend them." -- Washington State head coach Mike Leach, on Twitter (The Spokesman-Review)

I EVEN TIPPED THE COWS MYSELF

"I've eaten burritos bigger than you." -- Texans defensive end J.J. Watt, to Ray Rice during Sunday's game (Twitter)

JASON CAMPBELL'S AUBURN SQUAD WILL BE UP FIRST, RIGHT?

"I think we will get people saying ‘hey the BCS was pretty good.' I think you will be surprised by how many people down the road will say that." -- BCS Executive Director Bill Hancock, on comparisons between the future four-team playoff and the BCS (Sports Radio Interviews)

ONLY THE JETS COULD TURN REGGIE BUSH INTO A SYMPATHETIC FIGURE

"We want to knock him out, but we're out to do it legally," -- Jets linebacker Aaron Maybin, on the team's desire to hurt Reggie Bush for comments made about Darrelle Revis (ESPN New York)

"I don't even want to talk about him. He's a joke. I have to be on punt block to say something to him." -- Dolphins center Mike Pouncey, on Maybin (South Florida Sun Sentinel)

THAT'S A BOLD STRATEGY COTTON, LET'S SEE HOW IT WORKS OUT FOR THEM

"Ya know, uhh, there' gonna, I think they're gonna end their six game losing streak in the SEC, so I'm gonna go with Auburn." -- Professional swimmer and ESPN College Gameday guest Ryan Lochte, on the winner of the LSU/Texas A&M game (Awful Announcing)

OUR AUDIBLES THIS WEEK ALL START WITH LOUIS WOLFSON

"Obviously we’re not good at getting turnovers. So we’re going to get ‘takeovers’ this week. We changed the name so I think we’ll do much better." -- Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, on getting more turnovers (Dallas Morning News)

HE WOULD HAVE JOINED THE X-MEN, BUT WHEN YOUR NAME IS ALREADY JERRY KILL, IT CAN'T GET MUCH BETTER

"So I'm going to take a negative - since I was called a freak - and I'm going to turn it into a positive. I'm going to work my tail end off for the people that have the same situation I have. Maybe I'll get in trouble for this, but I've always told it like it is, but I am a tough person, and I've got a tough wife. The best way I can put it: Anybody who has the guts to do that, come see me. I'll show you how damn tough I am." -- Minnesota head coach Jerry Kill, on being called a freak for having seizures (CoachingSearch.com)

DON'T WORRY, TODD HALEY'S BEARD SHOWS THAT HE HAS A LOT OF EXPERIENCE GETTING THROWN UNDER BUSES

"There’s a guy calling the plays. That’s on him." -- Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, on Todd Haley dialing back the deep balls (Pittsburgh Tribune-Review)

#FIRSTCOLLEGENETWORKPROBLEMS

"We were given a deal that we had no input in, and we're trying to make it the best we can for both. And at the end of the year, everyone's going to have to sit down and see what we need to change and what they need to change. But I think there needs to be some give and take both ways." -- Texas head coach Mack Brown, on the added pressures of the Longhorn Network (OrangeBloods.com)

HE'S GOT COP SPEED, IN SO MUCH THAT HE GOT THEM OUT THERE QUICKLY

"He’s lucky that it wasn’t worse than what it was. The motive was apparently to video something to show to college recruiters for football," -- Palm Bay Police Departmant spokeswoman Yvonne Martinez, on a 19-year-old that was seriously injured trying to jump over a car for a recruiting video (Florida Today)

WHEN EMPLOYED BY TOM COUGHLIN, ONE FUMBLE CAN BE A LIFE-CHANGING EVENT

"I'm like birth control. You have to believe in me. Like birth control, 99.9 percent of the time I'm going to come through for you." -- Giants running back David Wilson (Newsday)

THOSE ARE PROBABLY THINGS WORTH CARING ABOUT, FOR FUTURE REFERENCE

"I do not care what your religion is. I do not care if I offend anyone. But even if Jesus and his disciples come in here on Saturday, we are going to f*ck them up and get them the f*ck out of here." -- Towson football coach Rob Ambrose, as related through offended linebacker Trevor Walker (The Towerlight)

Did Ryan Lochte actually pick a team to win the LSU/A&M game that wasn't playing in that game, or did I just misread that?

I assume so, otherwise it wouldn't have been funny.

Yep, you can see it on "The Soup", as well as probably a billion you tube links...

I'm not sure which is stranger - Minnesota's coach being named Jerry Kill or David Wilson saying you have to believe in him like birth control.

Apparently Tom Coughlin believes in "abstinence-only"

Big hitter, the llama.

But he's been in Tomlin's doghouse since he picked up that crucial 15-yarder for spitting in an opponent's face last year. I doubt he'll see much playing time.

We're still waiting for David Wilson to get into his rhythm.

Isn't Mike Pouncey belittling Maybin by pointing out that he is mostly a special teams player. I wonder how his teammates that are mostly on special team feel about that.

They probably don't give a crap, since they aren't the ones talking trash about the opposing team.

When I read the whole comment from Pouncey, the special teams-ness of it all seemed more like a comment of how big of a bust Maybin had turned out to be than an actual knock on special teams players. A former 11th(?) overall pick who never sees the field except on special teams is the punchline, not the fact that a special teams player was running his mouth.

Some coaches really know which buttons to hit. And some coaches are Rob Ambrose.
I really did laugh out loud at that quote though. Not only for the quote, but from imagining the expressions on the faces in the locker room while it was happening.

Is Cam still an entertainer and an icon?
