» The Week In Quotes: October 24, 2014

We all love Peyton Manning, but Peyton Manning doesn't love us all. Plus, coaches talk fake punts and prank calls, owners talk binge drinking, and Golden Tate talks getting punched in the face.

The Month In Quotes: August 2013

by Rory Hickey

MORE OF A TRUE BLOOD FAN?

"I don’t feel they deserve to be here. They did nothing to be here, other than want to be here. They didn’t put no blood, sweat and tears into none of this. All these men in here, they did that. They [the cameras] did nothing. No one deserves to see this, to come inside of this unless you’re a part of this. That’s why.” -- Cincinnati Bengals linebacker James Harrison, saying that the people working on HBO's Hard Knocks haven't earned the right to be at the Bengals training camp (Cincinnati.com)

NOT LIKE LONGTIME NFL STANDOUT TRAVIS JOHNSON HAS, ANYWAY

"Tony Romo has not earned a dollar he's been given in this league."

"But [Matt Schaub] can take his team to a Super Bowl. Tony Romo is not that guy. He's a thief; he needs to be brought up on federal charges." -- Former Houston Texans defensive lineman Travis Johnson, during a roundtable segment on CSN Houston (Shutdown Corner)

JIMMY GAROPPOLO IS NOT AMUSED

"Payton -- wasn't close. Just look at the numbers. I don't know that Tony's even graduated from Eastern yet." -- New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton, saying that he was a better college quarterback than fellow former Eastern Illinois Panthers quarterback and current Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo (Eye on Football)

IN THAT MOST CHIEFS INVOLVED IN THE PASSING GAME HAVEN'T BEEN RELEVANT SINCE THE IRAQ INVASION

"When the real season starts, that’s when you’ll see Bombs Over Baghdad." -- Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe, regarding the lack of big passing plays during the Chiefs training camp (Twitter)

HUSBANDS ACROSS THE NATION NOD IN AGREEMENT

"I love Ray, and I love how he always spoke from the heart, but if you listened to those speeches, a lot of them didn’t even make sense. He meant everything he was saying, but I didn’t know what he was talking about 90 percent of the time." -- Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco, on Ray Lewis’ pre-game speeches (National Football Post)

Game Rewind: Relive every NFL moment…subscribe to Game Rewind.

AS WE ALL KNOW, THE EASTERN FRONT WAS THE PRECURSOR TO THE STEEL CURTAIN

"When Houston had Warren Moon and all those guys, that was a great offense. Fortunately they didn't have any tight ends, and when the weather turned on 'em, it was like the Germans when they got into Russia, man. It froze 'em up." --Pittsburgh Steelers defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau, on the Houston Oilers’ run-and-shoot offense (Pittsburgh Tribune-Review)

WE'VE REPLACED TROY POLAMALU'S SKIN WITH RUBBER, LET'S SEE IF ANYONE WILL NOTICE

"Unbelievable football player, will be hard to ever replace a guy like Troy Polamalu. We expect to see him one day up in Akron, going into the Hall of Fame." -- Steelers color commentator Edmund Nelson, during a preseason game against the Chiefs (Shutdown Corner)

ARBY’S: IT’S GOOD MOOD FOOD!

"I never was really a girl who planned out what my wedding would be, what my dress would look like. Everybody's different. When we got married, he picked me up at the airport and I was wearing jeans and a sweatshirt and a hat. We drove the 20 minutes to Hudson or whatever it was, walked in, got married. Then we went and ate Arby's as our wedding meal. We get way more attention than we ever deserve or need or want, because of our jobs. I don't need a day that's all about me. I was happy to go get married." -- ESPN sideline reporter Samantha Ponder, when asked whether her wedding day with Minnesota Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder was everything she hoped it would be (St. Paul Pioneer Press)

GIVE GOODELL TIME

"That was ridiculous on his part. It should be a fineable offense. That's just not part of football -- hitting a defenseless player in his knee, that's something we all dread as players. That's my nightmare. Hit me in my head [instead]." -- Atlanta Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez, on the hit Houston Texans rookie safety D.J. Swearinger delivered to Miami Dolphins tight end Dustin Keller. Keller suffered a torn ACL, MCL, PCL and a knee dislocation and was put on injured reserve (USA Today Sports)

J-E-T-S JUST! DON’T! CRY!

"Don’t cry, play ball!" -- New York Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie, yelling at Jets center Nick Mangold, who exchanged words after Cromartie laid a vicious hit on wide receiver Stephen Hill during practice

“People are starting to become very -- I’m not trying to say soft -- but you gotta hit. It’s a gladiator sport. This is the stuff that is supposed to happen.” -- Hill, who was not injured on the play, said he and Cromartie agreed there were no hard feelings after the hit (The Star-Ledger)

SOUNDS LIKE FOOTBALL ON YOUR PHONE

"I don't think it brings anything to the team. It's a bit of a distraction and I think it's sort of misleading for the players … especially the young guys.”

"Even though it comes off as a documentary, you're asking young athletes to perform. Perform on the field ... don't perform in the locker room for a TV show. I don't think it's in the players' best interest." -- New York Giants co-owner Steve Tisch, when asked by TMZ (of course) why his team would never do Hard Knocks (TMZ)

YEAH I CAN’T BELIEVE THE NFL’S NEW BAG POLICY EITHER

"I’m so disgusted with the NFL right now about those situations. But if an offensive player makes enough stink about something they’ll change it. If they decide to change this rule they might as well put flags [on players] because then you give a guy like myself who’s 200 pounds a two-foot area to stop a guy who’s 240, 250 running at full speed, and that’s going to be kind of hard to do." -- Pittsburgh Steelers safety Ryan Clark, on the league’s plan to monitor low hits on defenseless players (NFL Nation Blog)

STRANGELY THAT IS ALSO HIS FAVORITE MEKHI PHIFER MOVIE

"From playing in a preseason game, it hit me in the head. It’s the unknown. I didn’t know what to expect. It was a big question mark on what the NFL speed was like and I finally got to see what it was. I was like, ‘Oh!’" -- Tennessee Titans first-round draft pick Chance Warmack, on the difference between NFL speed and SEC speed (The Tennessean)

BRAINWASHED WAS A VERY GOOD GEORGE HARRISON ALBUM TO BE FAIR

"I’m just trying to help him. Clearly the young generation, they think they have all the answers. He’s going through a little turmoil right now, trying to make it out on the field, and it’s unfortunate. But that’s where we’re at right now as far as these young quarterbacks who think they have all the answers. Until things start to fall apart and come down trembling on you, then you want some help. But it’s a shame. I honestly think that over there in Washington, he’s getting brainwashed. He’s getting input from whoever it may be on, ‘There’s no reason to talk to him, it didn’t work out here.’ If they expressed their dislike when I was there, or what I used to do, so be it. But, I hope the best for the young man, but the direction he’s going in is really a direction he does not want to do. He does not want to go there with me, especially when I got the last word." -- Former Washington Redskins quarterback Donovan McNabb, on current Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin being “brainwashed” because he rejected McNabb’s invitation to talk with him (DC Sports Bog)

HOW MANY AUTOGRAPHS DO WE GET OUT OF IT?

"If I ever get Manziel disease, I want all of you to smack me in the head with your microphones" -- Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston, at an FSU media availability

"I would not, BUT I'm gonna get some cheeseballs anyway" -- Winston, when asked if he would give up a national championship for a lifetime supply of cheeseballs (Deadspin)

HOPEFULLY VICK RUNS LIKE A FOAL INSTEAD OF A FOLES

"I'm going to have the opportunity to do what I want to do in this offense and run the football. And yes, I will be a threat." -- Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick, on his role in Chip Kelly’s offense

"You guys act like I get hurt once a week. You all did that to me. Made me change the way I played the game." -- Vick, to the assembled group of reporters, regarding his ‘injury-prone’ label (The Philadelphia Inquirer)

FRAN TARKENTON: THE LAST ANGRY MAN

"They’ve had [Josh Freeman] there for four years and they have question marks about you? You didn’t have question marks about Matt Ryan after his fourth year or Joe Flacco. That means they don’t think he can play. He’s not going to get magical and all of the sudden in the fifth year be Aaron Rodgers. They want [Glennon] to be able to play. The only thing that will keep him from playing is if he’s not able to learn the system and make plays."

“[Freeman] plays sometimes at a nice level. I’ve watched him a lot. He just plays god-awful. That’s who you are. It’s just a player being able to play or not play. Josh Freeman has proven to me that he can’t play." -- Hall of Fame quarterback Fran Tarkenton, in a radio interview with WDAE in Tampa, expressing doubt about Buccaneers quarterback Josh Freeman’s ability to succeed in the NFL (NFL Nation Blog)

NO WORRIES ALEX, NOBODY CARES THAT LELAND STANFORD WAS A ROBBER BARON ANYMORE

"He does not like anything about the game except getting paid." -- Former St. Louis Rams general manager Billy Devaney, on former Rams 1st-round draft pick and current Oakland Raiders offensive tackle Alex Barron (NFL Nation Blog)

PLENTY OF JALAPENOS FOLKS

"Just did one or two steps. Didn't want to give it the full gamut just yet because it is the preseason. [But] the Salsa is still going strong." -- New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz, on why he did an abbreviated version of his trademark Salsa dance during a preseason game against the Steelers (NFL Nation Blog)

You left out Rex's "There, I'll say it sideways, backwards, etc." quote? Or does that require too much of a visual to be funny?

1. James Harrison needs to understand that HBO is paying for the privilege of showing his team's camp, and that he wouldn't be in this situation if the Steelers hadn't let his sorry aging ass go.

2. Samantha Ponder sounds too good to be true.

3. Someone needs to explain to Cromartie that his offense is bad enough without him trying to knock out his own teammates.

I always get a kick outta' meatheads who never figure out that they are in the entertainment business, which means, yes, that there are going to be people standing around with cameras at work, and the meathead should be happy that this is the case.

Ah, but can you tell the difference between a meathead who doesn't know he's in entertainment and an entertainer who knows his job is to play a meathead?

In the first case, the entertainer is oblivious to the situation. In the second case, the entertainer is in on the joke. I think Harrison clearly falls into the 1st category. Someone like Ray Lewis falls into the 2nd category.

Was McNabb always like that?

Wouldn't surprise me if he was. I would say that his inability to stay in shape during the latter part of his career contributed to his difficulties in Philly, Washington, and Minny. I'm surprised that he doesn't understand why the Washington coaching staff isn't a big fan of his and isn't in a hurry to let RGIII talk to him.
