» Scramble Over/Unders: the Norths

The league's northern divisions pose a number of meaty questions, such as: "Is the Bears' offense due for a repeat performance?" "Why do the Lions have such pronounced splits?" and "Has Johnny Manziel made the Cleveland brass even crazier?"

The Week In Quotes: January 4, 2013

compiled by Rivers McCown

EXCEPT HOW YOU GUYS ARE STAYING AT HOME AND WE ARE NOT, BUT HEY, WHAT DOES THAT MATTER?

"Hey Tony. I just wanted to say to you, don’t listen to what anybody else is saying about you. You’re a great quarterback, man. And this game doesn’t mean anything." -- Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin, on Tony Romo's Week 17 performance (Shutdown Corner)

IT HAPPENED. HE WASN'T GOOD. GET OVER IT

"We watched RGIII at the Washington Redskins, Wilson at the Seahawks, the new quarterback at the 49ers, and Carolina, and they are actually running a spread offense in the NFL. So my hope is, and I’m sure Tim feels the same way, is to go play in one of those systems where they let him play" -- Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer, on Tim Tebow (Pro Football Talk)

YES, IF ONLY NORV HAD THAT SEVENTH SEASON, THINGS WOULD HAVE TURNED AROUND

"Norv never really got a fair shake. I hope the next guy gets a fair shake." -- Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers, on recently-fired Norv Turner (SI.com)

RYAN TANNEHILL THINKS YOU ARE SPOT ON HERE

"They've got a typical Big 10 defense." -- Nebraska quarterback Taylor Martinez, on Georgia's defense (Ledger-Enquirer)

"I think the Big Ten, talent-wise, is a lot better, and the defenses in the Big Ten are better than SEC defenses. This was supposed to be one of the top defenses in the SEC, and we pretty much did anything we wanted against them." -- Martinez, after Nebraska was beaten 45-31 (Journal Star)

LESLIE FRAZIER: RUINER OF FUN

"For the past two years I've been trying to get in on field goal block. Come in off the edge, you know? It's just going to take one block for them to really be like, 'OK, you know what? Let's take the chance and let you go out there and get it done. Kickoff return, I wouldn't mind getting back there. I'm in it to win." -- Vikings running back Adrian Peterson, wanting time on special teams (AP)

"He always asks. He's a football player. Gunner, field goal block, returner. The guy is awesome. I always say yes, and then I ask the head coach and he says no. I know what the answer is going to be. I don't even have to ask." -- Vikings special teams coach Mike Preifer, on trying to secure Peterson on special teams (AP)

LATEST SUGGESTED NAME CHANGE FOR THE BIG EAST: THE BCC: BIG CLUSTERF*CK CONFERENCE

"Without question, conference affiliation has been an odyssey for Boise State, with all the unexpected turns and changes that term suggests. The benefits of geographic footprint, revenue, and national exposure have to be balanced against the changing circumstances of conference realignment. I am confident that our Mountain West membership is the very best decision for Boise State University, our student-athletes and our incredible fan base." -- Boise State University president Robert Kustra, on their return to the Mountain West after a few months in a theoretical Big East (Dr. Saturday)

ACTUALLY, THEY ARE BELOW YOUR PAY GRADE

"You’re asking me questions above my pay grade. I saw [president] Michael Bidwill, I saw [VP of player personnel] Steve Keim, I saw [general manager] Rod Graves, those guys might have some answers for you. Those are the decision-makers. I’m just a number." -- Arizona wideout Larry Fitzgerald, on the upcoming changes to the franchise (azcardinals.com)

NOTE TO SELF: NEVER OFFEND JADEVEON CLOWNEY IN ANY WAY

"Yeah, he laughed about it," -- South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, on Vincent Smith accidentally getting him in the fellas earlier in the game, before this happened. (Twitter)

SOMEBODY GET THIS MAN A FREE FOA

"I don’t really watch TV that much. I’ve been reading a lot of books lately. They don’t have any opinions on the Texans." -- Texans running back Arian Foster, on TV analysts saying that is important to have momentum going into the playoffs (houstontexans.com)

A COLLEGE FOOTBALL COACH WHO ADMITTED HE ACTUALLY WATCHES TV? HE CLEARLY DIDN'T PREPARE WELL FOR THIS GAME

"Well I'll tell you this, Pollack got us fired up early in the day, when he said this was gonna be a 15-point game in their favor, and it's gonna feel like a 30-point game, and then he said our defense hadn't played well all year. This is for him." -- Louisville coach Charlie Strong, on motivation in the Sugar Bowl (thanks David Pollack!) (The Detroit News)

OR, IT COULD BE LIKE AMERICAN GLADIATORS, AND WHOEVER FINISHES ASSAULT FASTEST GETS TO KEEP HIS JOB. ACTUALLY, LET'S DO THAT

"As far as I know we’re going to be back,. It could be like ‘Survivor,’ you know, when you go back and write somebody’s name down" -- Lions GM Martin Mayhew, on surviving the chopping block (Detroit Free Press)

SERIOUSLY THOUGH, HIS FOOTBALL SKILLS ARE NOT UP TO PAR

"He’s terrible. I can’t believe they tried us like that. They tried our life, man. ... He’s not good at all." -- Florida State linebacker Vince Williams, on Jordan Lynch's comments that Northern Illinois would have the Seminoles "on their knees" (The Big Lead)

FEEL THE LOVIE

"I don't even know if I want to play again. That's been something on my mind for two years. It's not (much fun for me anymore). I've got my workers comp papers in my pocket. We'll see how I feel. I'm going to go home and talk to my wife and talk to my family and see where we go from there. I got two beautiful kids, man, two boys. A lot of stress has been on my mind lately." -- Bears receiver Devin Hester, following Lovie Smith's ouster (Shutdown Corner)

DE NILE IS THE RIVER IN WHICH ALL COLLEGE FOOTBALL COACHES MUST WASH THEIR HANDS

"We’re playing in the Fiesta Bowl. That’s the biggest thing in my life. If I allowed other things to get into my life, then they would be distractions, but there aren’t." -- Oregon head coach Chip Kelly, on NFL rumors (AP)

"He can finish Chip's sentences. He's been in that environment long enough (to succeed). It's a leap of faith but it's very similar – I'd almost argue that it was a bigger leap (promoting) Chip than with Mark." -- Anonymous Oregon source, on presumptive Oregon coach-to-be (and current offensive coordinator) Mark Helfrich (USA Today)

JONATHAN VILMA: ONE OF OUR NATION'S FINEST JOURNALISTS BY DEFAULT

"It was (a) complete opposite from before where it was a simple D that players had lot of control and say. We couldn't suggest (expletive)...Nothing ever changed. It was his way only. Don't even get me started on lack (of) ability to adjust during games. Bad, bad, bad" -- Anonymous Saints player, on defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo's unit (The Times-Picayune)

"No. I'm bothered you reported it. We're not the Jets who run to the media for everything." -- Saints linebacker Jonatahan Vilma, on the report (The Times-Picayune)

BUT TWO YEARS, THREE TOPS

"I'm a man of my word. I am what I am. Maybe I get fired in six years. But I'm not gonna cut and run after one year, that's for sure" -- Penn State head coach Bill O'Brien, on staying with Penn State (Penn Live)

Holy crap, Jadeveon Clowney.

I'm amazed he didn't get flagged for helmet-to-helmet on that play.

Well it wasn't a helmet-to-helmet hit, and it wasn't on a defenseless player anyway. (I think the NCAA has a similar rule when runners can basically be hit however provided you aren't spearing.)

The replay clearly shows it was helmet to not-quite-handed-off-yet ball.

And of course that explains how the runner's helmet came off so hard that it ended up 10 yards behind the play.

He needs to tighten his chin strap.

Michigan hasn't had a Michigan offensive line since RichRod showed up and ruined the defense instead of fixing the offense.
