Bears Waive Cedric Benson

Man, I didn't see this coming after Cedric Benson's second alcohol-related incident in two months. Godspeed, Matt Forte.

Wow.

I wonder where he'll end up. Gotta think Dallas will be in the mix. The Raiders are always ready to pounce on a guy with a troubled past. Maybe Ricky will talk Parcells into taking a flyer on Benson.

That 2005 draft sure was wacky!

2 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

I'd be laughing if the whole Bears offence didn't make my head hurt so much.

3 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

It seems to me the Bears are taking a much harder stance against legal troubles than they have recently.

Really though, Benson doesn't offer any more value than Adrian Peterson. I could see the Bears showing interesting in Travis Henry now.

4 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

1: With Marion Barber and
Felix Jones, I don't think the Cowboys need Benson. In any event, don't they already have enough potential distractions with Pacman Jones, Tank Johnson, TO, Tony Romo (and Jessica Simpson), etc.? If the Cowboys do sign him, Jerry Jones should sign a sponsorship deal with a limousine service that includes unlimited vouchers for Pacman, Tank and Benson so that they can get home from their late night escapades without being arrested.

6 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

re1
Raiders don't need Benson. Team has great RB core with D McFadden (very athketic back like cross between Marcus Allen and Bo jackson). Justin Fargas very good, L Jordan if healthy can provide spark. Remember M Bush on team, did not play lasy yeat. J Griffith and Oren O'Neal (devastating blockee) are fullbacks and are good. So Lets see why would Raiders need Benson? Maybe to set up champagne in raiders locker room after AFC champisonship game and Superbolwl?

7 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

Shaun Alexander to Chicago?

Seems like something that could happen

8 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

I thought Benson might have had a decent season if the Bears offensive line improved upon last year. Can't say I am too bothered to see him go, he just didn't seem to be worth the hassle he brought anymore.

It seems to me that in the light of Benson and Lynch's legal shenanigans that the trade value of Lamont Jordan may have rocketed lately.

9 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

Man, Raiderjoe just brings it, every time.

I'd think a division rival might want to take him on, to give him added incentives. GB/Min are taken care of. I'd think Detroit is a serious possibility, baring any sort of suspension.

10 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

Re 7:

I seriously doubt that would happen. They just spent an off-season jettisoning old veterans who were no longer productive, why would they want to go back?

11 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

"Maybe to set up champagne in raiders locker room after AFC champisonship game and Superbolwl?

That is just awesome. The Raiders are now my second-favourite team, because I really want to read what Raiderjoe will write if they Raiders win it all.

As for Benson, Detroit or perhaps Houston? For mine Cinccinnatti seems the best fit in every respect.

13 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

Any time anyone ever wonders why it is so hard to trade down during the draft -- i.e. to get someone to trade up -- just go over to Wiki and browse the first ten picks of the 2005 NFL Draft.

Alex Smith, Cedric Benson, Cadillac, Pacman, Troy Williamson, Antrel Rolle, Mike Williams... man, sometimes you really have have to feel sorry for those teams that have to draft that high.

The funny thing was that Aaron Rodgers fell through the ranks like a skydiver without a parachute that day, at a time when many thought he could be the #1 overall pick. And here we set three years later, with him never having made a start, and he's almost going to be, by default, more productive than anyone of those guys taken in the top ten before him.

And it should be pointed out that two of the three who haven't busted to this point -- Ronnie Brown and Carlos Rogers -- are both coming off of torn ACLs, and the talk is that Rogers will have to begin the season on the PUP list. And also, the other guy who didn't bust (Braylon Edwards) was significantly slowed at times by a blown out knee and a bout with staph infection.

Ouch.

14 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

I don't even understand why he's still in the league. He's being waived about 2 seasons too late imo. I won't say he's a terrible guy, but he is a terrible player. He also doesn't seem to have much in the way of work ethic or common sense. What's the appeal?

15 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

The burstless Benson was broken, twice busted then booted. How sad.

16 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

OK, here's the thing. In the Bears' Super Bowl year, Jones and Benson both had pretty comparable numbers.

The following year, the OL looked worse, and suddenly Benson was bad. (None of the other backs looked any better.)

I'm not saying Benson was the answer, and I'm not saying it was a mistake to release him, but to insist that he was released two years too late flies in the face of evidence.

17 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

7: I seriously doubt the Bears have any interest in Shaun Alexander. His running style the past few years (tiptoeing to the line of scrimmage, then falling down after first contact) seems like Benson's style. Why would they want a washed-up version of Benson, especially at the salary Alexander will want?

It seems far more likely the Bears will be interested in someone like Kevin Jones if he proves to be healthy.

18 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

re 6: So Lets see why would Raiders need Benson? Maybe to set up champagne in raiders locker room after AFC champisonship game and Superbolwl?

I haven't laughed so hard at something connected with football since I read the "Emmit Smith mock draft." I think the "Raiderjoe--complete oaf or clever humorist?" debate has been settled

19 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

I don't think anyone truly "wants" Alexander. The fact that he has lasted on the open market for almost three months now tells you that every other team in the league essentially agrees with the Seahawks... Hell, teams won't even offer him a contract for the league minimum.

That said, as long as he wants to stick it out, someone will get short on warm bodies at tailback and go for him. I don't think they will "want" him, per se, but sometimes you just have to take what you can.

Given the Bears situation now without Benson, I can see them being one of those teams.

20 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

Re 19:

I still don't see it, I'm sure there are undrafted free agents out there, that would at least have a chance of out-producing an over-the-hill, scared of being tackled running back.

21 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

The issue is not whether the Cowboys need him; it's whether he has a gun charge on his resume. If this is about DUIs, I'm not sure they have a qualified mentor available right now.

22 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

Pretty much what PaulH said.

Alexander doesn't make sense for any team to pick up. He's bad and won't give you much production.

However, I imagine someone will pick him up and he'll be tabbed with the "veteran experience" tag, someone that can mentor Forte.

23 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

Oh, my! I don't usually comment on Raiderjoe things, but "devastating blockee" is now my new favorite phrase. Next time MJD stones a linebacker in blitz pickup, I will be yelling that at the top of my lungs!

24 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

I cannot imagine the Bears going after Travis "off the field problems and lack of effort" Henry.

Clayton mentions Kevin Jones-I can see that. He may not be able to stay healthy, but he does give his hardest ever time.

The Bears have perhaps the worst set of skill position players in the NFL

25 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

Nice way to bookend the day. Strahan goes out on top, and Benson goes out on absolute rock bottom.

26 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

#24 And the worst part about it, is that they'll still beat the lions twice this year.

27 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

And the worst part about it, is that they’ll still beat the lions twice this year.

Which means exactly what? They go 7-9?

28 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

#26
You do know that the Lions beat them twice last year right?

29 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

#26 and #27

well losing to the Lions twice last season only put them at 7-9. does that still sting for Bears fans? Hell the Bears are the only team in the NFC North the Lions usually have a chance against in the Millen era (6-8 against them, 2-12 against the Vikings, 2-12 against the Packers)

30 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

Re: 11, Seriously. Raiderjoe, you have officially made the raiders my third favorite team. You make the world a better place.

31 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

He's mediocre, but plenty of teams would be upgraded by a mediocre running back. The Texans would seem like the perfect spot for him, except that he keeps getting in trouble just down the road. There have been quite a few backs that failed miserably in their first stop before turning into productive backs (Garrison Hearst and Thomas Jones come to mind)

32 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

When will RaiderJoe t-shirts be available in the store? I think they may be needed.

33 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

#32

Absolutely. But which of his fine quotes would be on them? I vote for the one about Wes Welker being like a homeless man's Fred Biletnikoff (I can't even remember the right combo of spelling/grammar mistakes for this one).

34 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

This (Benson with the Bears) seemed destined to end badly from the start. Depending on how much trouble Lynch is in, maybe Benson gets a shot in Buffalo.

Sorry, I can't jump on the Raiders badwagon. If they actually do experience some success, Raiderjoe's unvarnished optimism won't seem nearly as entertaining.

35 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

He could probably be a big help to Michael Irvin while he mentors PacMan

36 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

I recall the days when I got lambasted for suggesting that the Bears would be better hanging their hats on Jones versus Benson.

I now await lengthy rejoinders about the offensive line, blah, blah, blah.

Whatever Benson advocates. Dude is on the street. It's done.

Gotta love the NFC North. No quarterbacks. One running back of note. A few wide receivers.

Go defenses!!

37 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

lots of pleasure-boating opportunities in the Bay Area, no?

39 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

Benson needs a pilot's license to complete the OWI trifecta. How would one go about pulling over someone in that situation anyways?

raiderjoe is the absolute man.

40 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

Benson is not only bad, and has off-field trouble, but is by all accounts uncoachable. The entire time he's been in Chicago we've heard stories about how he doesn't feel he needs to do anythng differently, or learn anything, and he needs the ball 20+ times/game to be effective. So just give him the ball a lot and blow open big holes and leave him the hell alone and he'll be fine. If it weren't for the Bears' front office's need to give him every chance to justify his draft position, he'd have been gone a year ago.

Don't bring up the comparison with T Jones in 2006. They were used differently. Besides that, for God's sake, just. Watch. Him. You know, if you can watch football with a critical eye, and not give a RB credit for things like running 8 yards through a giant hole and falling down when a CB arm-tackles him, you can see very quickly that Benson sucks. He's not fast, he's not elusive, he doesn't punish tacklers or run over anyone. He's not particularly quick to the hole, and he sure as hell isn't creative. Is he? Anyone? Bueller?

He sucks. And he has baggage. Ni-ice.

41 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

Ah, Dylan, don't aim so low...... meet Cedric Benson, your new......Space Shuttle Commander!!!! Can't you just see a field sobriety test on the runway at Cape Kennedy!!

42 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

#41

Also he would burst into tears at the presser he was introduced at.

44 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

Has anyone ever considered the possibility that Raiderjoe could, in fact, be Al Davis?

48 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

Has any trade worked out worse for both teams involved that the trade for Thomas Jones?

49 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

The jury is still out on T Jones in NJ. We'll see how he does this year since he might actually have someone attempt to block for him. Time will tell. If he pays off, the Jets stole him.

50 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

#48

The Dre Bly for Tatum Bell/George Foster was perhaps a little worse for both teams involved

51 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

How about the AJ Feeley for Cleo Lemon trade? That one sure sucked for both teams!

52 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

#44. Raiderjoe comments often about his 2nd love, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. Anyone know Al Davis' favorite beer?

53 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

"Stealing" a player that ran for a 3.9 yard average and 1 TD last year...I haven't seen a theft like that since Constanza took that eclair off the top of the trash.

Let's be honest, Jones is pretty average at best and Benson is a turd. Neither of those guys would have noticeably helped the Bears last year.

54 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

Given his NFL production there's no doubt Benson should be picked up by another team. The question is "at what price?". He certainly isn't an elite NFL back. Backs with his production value aren't that rare and most of them won't be suspended for drinking and driving.

55 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

From Wiki:

Raiderjoe is a regular poster who is believed by many to be Al Davis. Raiderjoe's posts are unabashedly optimistic and riddled with spelling and grammatical errors. One of his most famous posts is this gem from May 26, 2007- Seahawks should worry more about on-field product than what soda to sell. Raiders all about winning. Don’t care what fans drink.

THAT is an awesome quote.

56 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

Is there anyway we could get a "Best Of" post for the best Raiderjoe quotes?

That would get more comments than the Irrational Brady v. Manning thread, the Irrational Spygate thread, and the Robo Punter thread combined.

57 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

Benson: mediocre back with negative off-the-field intangibles. Why bother? There are usually a few young guys on every NFL team at this stage of the year who are just as likely to succede, and are not as much of a risk. I think Benson will be someone's backup to the backup this year.

58 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

Losing Benson shouldn't hurt the Bears offense. Hell, maybe they'll finally stop relying on the run and institute a short passing game. I mean, they've got the quarterbacks to...oh.

59 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

34: "Sorry, I can’t jump on the Raiders badwagon."

Now *that* is a typo.

60 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

I'm kinda surprised at the speculation about where Benson will land. I would be surprised if he ever plays again - his "production" at this level is laughable, his attitude is nothing but entitlement issues, and his judgment is enough on its own merits to scare away any team. There are plenty of backups in this league who can put up 3 yard averages who are good team players. Benson is through.

61 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

Wow. Raiderjoe is listed as a regular feature of FO. I guess it's just a matter of time before he goes into the payroll or sues the site for exploiting his public image without compensation. Maybe the radierjoe T-shirts would generate enough cash to settle the suit.

62 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

I have to agree with Charger Jeff, I don't see any team with a need for a RB of average talent, a poor work ethic, and off field issues, that isn't willing to play special teams.

63 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

So which FO writer is raiderjoe? I think it's Bill Barnwell.

64 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

I did a google search for “raiderjoe” and got a poster on slate:

I’m in my mid-30s, professionally successful with a “good” job, a “nice guy,” attractive and in good shape, divorced (with no kids or issues after a short term, ill-advised marriage in my 20s — but hey, it shows I’m willing to make a commitment), regarded by my friends’ wives and girlfriends as attractive and a frequent set-up option for their single friends, and I’m genuinely eager to find a good woman and start a family.

But seriously, the link in my comment is much more likely to be the “real” raiderjoe.

65 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

I'm going to start referring to all defensive tackles who shed double teams to blow up running plays in the backfield as "devastating blockees"

66 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

I think raiderjoe should have his own color of text two right with to avoid imposter trying to decieve everybody.

67 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

re30 and other posters
who rite they want to root for Raiders sometimes now.
it good choice
to come to Dark side, people say its too early to start drinking herem but it never tooo early so I got the Sierera Neveda ale Ales going on here.
So come to Dark Side, is Dark Side because Raiders wear blak not really dark side like team is bad, but Dark Side because of scary black uniforms and fans. not easy place for fans of other teams to watch games.

68 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

sorry if post sounded like i was drunk. iyt's because I was drunk

69 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

Re 53:

Excellent Seinfeld reference. I imagine the fanbase of whichever team signed him would play the role of the mother in that scene, looking on in horror!

70 Re: Bears Waive Cedric Benson

Raiderjoe is drunk? Theres a real surprise. Can the raiders do no wrong in your eyes? Is every year a potential Super Bowl year for the Raiders?
