Arizona to Hire Kliff Kingsbury as Head Coach

Jason Lisk makes the right point over at The Big Lead... this is all about salvaging Josh Rosen after his dismal (second-lowest quarterback DYAR ever) rookie season. Kingsbury is thought of as a cutting-edge offensive mind, but he was only 35-40 at Texas Tech. He couldn't win there with Patrick Mahomes as his quarterback. But there's a big difference between a) trying to recruit defensive players to Lubbock and b) starting with Chandler Jones, Patrick Peterson, and the No. 1 overall selection in the 2019 draft. Lisk does bring up a good comparison here, which is Mike Riley going 8-14 in two years at Oregon State before he was hired by the Chargers to try to salvage Ryan Leaf in 1999. (It did not work.)

Good Lord this smacks of desperation.

Less desperate than hiring McDaniel.

I think Kingsbury is a better OC than HC, though.

I could see bringing in Kingsbury as a QB coach, maybe an OC. But his HC record does not exactly give one warm fuzzies.

Bruce Arians has a 27-39 record as a college coach. Caldwell was a better pro coach than college coach.

One could go round and round on this for quite a while. In the end it's all going to turn on what actually happens, not what we argue will happen. :)

Well, desperate times call for desperate measures. Arizona fielded one of the worst offenses in NFL history this season. They might as well try something a little outside the box.

So we're in agreement that NFL teams view Mike Leach as simply too weird to work for them? Otherwise what's the argument for Kingsbury over Leach?

Does Leach even want to coach in the NFL? He does seem pretty happy tracking raccoons in the snow and shit.

I've never heard of him being interested or not, although that's usually the sort of thing that only comes up once teams start to request interviews. He may well be content with college life, but at the same time, it's more the exception for a talented guy not to want to get the highest level if their field, happy or not. Heck, I work with many people who left very comfortable situations to move to a position where they can write "Hon." before their name. It's just human nature.

Perhaps once Zimmer leaves Minnesota, there would be plenty of wildlife to track not far outside of Minneapolis. Or just think of all the hijinks he could get into in Green Bay! This really does call for a Hard Knocks / All or Nothing series. (Far moreso than a series following around Jim Harbaugh.)

I read his book "Swing you Sword" back in 2015 and in it he talked about applying for coaching positions in the NFL. He was definitely interested at some point, but he provided few if any details on where and when.

I can see the argument for him. He may not have won a ton of games with Mahomes, but he does deserve a good chunk of the credit for developing him into the kickass football player he is today. I could see an Air Raid style offense working in the NFL; we're already halfway there with the dominance of shotgun-three-wide sets in the modern NFL. Seems like a reasonable enough gamble to try to salvage Rosen's career before he's completely ruined.

I can't say it better so I'll quote from a comment by robert.sellers2 at Field Gulls Seahawks blog.

There are 4 big rule differences in the NFL that hurt the college systems.

In order of importance.
1) blocking downfield on passes behind the line of scrimmage – not allowed in NFL

2) OL can get 3 yards past line of scrimmage before an illegal man down field penalty in college – big issue if you want to match RPOs with something other then zone blocking or sweeps

3) Narrow hashes – using Baylor splits to the wide side of the field basically allow you to isolate any player you want at the dead center of field with the wider college hashes.

4) The refs stand over the ball even if there is no offensive substitution in the NFL – this is the one that really hurt Chip Kelly, when the NFL implemented this after his 1st season with PHI.

Yeah I love the signing, it’s the high risk kind of move the NFL doesn’t like to make but has tons of potential upside. Hiring a retread or someone else uninspiring isn’t getting the Cardinals anywhere. Why not try shooting for the stars?

I don't follow college football much, but I thought there was a point that Kingsbury was kind of respected as a HC, no?

I think most college coaches who go to the NFL have failed in the past 20 years or so (maybe longer). But for some reason I feel like Kingsbury might be different. (Again, I don't follow college football, so I don't really know much about Kingsbury.) But I think part of the reason college coaches often fail is because the guys who are hired (Spurrier, Kelly, Saban, etc.) are guys who were very successful in college. They were royalty at big college football schools. It's probably hard for them to switch to having to coach guys who are getting paid a lot of money, instead of holding scholarships over the heads of 18-year-olds.

Instead, Kingsbury is a guy who struggled a little more as a coach and probably isn't going into it with the same mindset that a guy like Spurrier did.

Just a theory.

The problem in AZ is the owner is BFF with the gm, and wont hold him accountable, and the gm hasn't performed nearly well enough to be deserving of such treatment.

Not only has Keim done a poor to mediocre job lately, he got himself suspended last summer for a DUI, leading to his coach going it alone over most of training camp. That same coach who got fired one year into the job. Maybe that's why many of the other coaches didn't interview for the Arizona job. The Jets haven't held MacCagnan responsible for his mistakes, but at least he didn't drive the wrong way into the Lincoln Tunnel, he just drafted someone who did.

The DUI was flagrant, too, more than twice the legal limit, and his 2nd DUI as an adult. Unless you are way, way, out on the right tail in your profession that pays 7 figures, that oughta' get you fired, because you haven't done enough to outweigh the pain in the ass you are by being a felonious drunk. Keim is at best smack in the middle of his profession, maybe substantially worse. Cutting him slack makes the roster very hard to manage.I think Kingsbury is likely to be chewed up.

Yeah, Wilks was totally thrown under the bus in no small part due to having no GM during training camp. IMO he should have gotten another year.

Did Rosen say something, or do you just mean Rosen's performance?

He was asked directly about Wilks, and smiled and said "no comment" or something similar, I don't remember where I saw that though. I read it as a strong indictment
