Rams Join the New Uniform Parade

The Los Angeles Rams are the last team to introduce new uniforms this offseason. The blue and yellow call back to the classic Rams uniforms of the 80s and 90s, with modern touches like gradient numbers. The road "bone on bone" uniforms are interesting, especially since the Rams have gone back to yellow horns on the helmets. But what's with that white Los Angeles Rams patch on the off-white background? That does not look good at all.

My God.  Why is it so hard to make a decent looking football uniform?  That road Uni looks like something my 8 year old would come up with.  And that number font!  Did they let Microsoft Word randomly pick that out?

3 I actually like the off…

I actually like the off-white on off-white a lot, though I don't think I'm a fan of the gradient numbers.

4 I think I'm going to like…

I think I'm going to like the home uniforms a lot, with both the blue and yellow pants. I don't hate the 3D look to the horns on the helmet, and the royal blue is definitely an upgrade over the navy lids they've been wearing. I actually like the gradient in the numbers and stripes. I can't explain why, but there's something very L.A. about them

The road uniforms ... good gravy. The bone color (and that's what it's called -- not grey, not off-white, BONE) is allegedly "inspired by the color of a ram horn and the sands of L.A." Which ... isn't sand tan? But more importantly, none of these uniform elements match each other. There is no bone on the helmet. There is no blue in the pants. There is barely any yellow in the jersey (in part because they virtually removed the horn design on the shoulder). Everything clashes with everything else. They're a nightmare.

It's interesting that on the Rams' uniform site (https://ramsnewlook.com), if you scroll down, they have these three uniforms for 2020, and then blank templates for 2021 and 2022. Almost like they've left themselves an out to change them next year if these aren't popular.

5 The Rams' Twitter account…

The Rams' Twitter account has a lot more images (https://twitter.com/RamsNFL), and ... what is the point of the team logo patch on the left shoulder? In case you get within two feet of them and forget who you're playing? And why the random squiggle on top of it? That's bizarre.

And apparently some of the horn designs contain subtle references to the St. Louis Gateway Arch as a secret tribute to where the Rams used to play, which is stupid because it's where the Rams USED TO PLAY.

6 Why is the "horn" on  the…

Why is the "horn" on  the helmet in two pieces? Or is it one horn plus the letter "C", or it is just over-designed? "what is the point of the team logo patch on the left shoulder?"; perhaps it is to make counterfeiting slightly harder, but more likely just crappy design.

It's tough to really judge a uniform until you've seen it during a game. Even then it can take a few games to really make a decision.

So I will wait until I've seen these in action before completely deciding. But based on what I've seen, I don't love these uniforms.

I don't like the font of the numbers. I don't like the new horn. I don't like "bone on bone". At least they kept the basic blue and yellow colors, and completely eliminated the St Louis "gold".

But I'm old (48).

12 It looks like the royal…

It looks like the royal jerseys are lacking number decals on the shoulders / sleeves. Is that allowed?

That omission aside, I like the royal / yellow combination pretty well. I'm not a fan of monochrome combos, and the roya/royal and "bone on bone" combinations do nothing to change that outlook. I find the "bone on bone" option particularly distasteful, in both name and appearance.

15 "It looks like the royal…

"It looks like the royal jerseys are lacking number decals on the shoulders / sleeves. Is that allowed?"

The Chargers don't have them either. It appears both teams got permission from the NFL to ignore that rule ... but if that rule can be ignored whenever anyone wants, what's the point? I mean, it honestly doesn't bother me that there aren't shoulder/sleeve numbers, but just get rid of the rule then.

16 Agreed, if everyone who asks…

Agreed, if everyone who asks gets an exemption to the rule... then it's not a rule!

I feel like I'll miss them, but I guess they're small enough (and at times oddly-positioned enough) that my feeling may just be a general aversion to change rather than something rooted in any actual value they bring to a uniform.

21 Tv nunbers

Chargesr have no tv numbers now on jerests b7t do have numbers on side of helmets so they do have tv numbers just in d8fferent spot. Makrs for cleaner hersey. 2020 Chargers uniforms are 1976 Raiders of NFL uniforms. Chargers know about makijg good uniforms. Do not know much about winning, however.

Pates also  now have no tv numbe4s.

Ramms decised to have TV numbers on bone jerseys but not on blue herseys. This makes no sense. Why have them on one jersey but not other color jersey?!  Was uniform designer drunk?

Also weird -- Differenpatch on blue jerseys than bone jerseys

3D effect on helmet? Total garbage. 1976 Bucs of uniform things of designer tryijg too hard. Makes old Kagaurs half black, half gold helmet look good ij comparison. For 3D to be effective, your eyes shoudl immediately see intended 3D effect. You shiudl not have to think about it

I amnot seeinf intended 3D effect. My eyes are defaulting to broken loop thing. Loook like one thinf coming from front of helmet and darting towards back of lid and them this dopey C just floatinf there nkt attached to ither part. That is what I see

Looks like two parts. You hasve to really stare at it a bit to see 3D effect. 3D nto supposed to work liek that. So thsi is helmet design failure.

"i am ram doing ram things. This sage tastes nice. Yum yum in my tum tum. Ohhh noo. Oh no! Oh no! My right horn just broke in half fir no reason. The curved part just liek fell off, bro."

28 The numbers on sleeves or…

The numbers on sleeves or shoulderpads that are readable from the sidelines.

Good example here where you can identify both the RB and OL

Theoretically makes it easier for TV announcers to spot which player is which. I'm not sure that's such an issue in these days of HiDef with super slo mo replays available from multiple angles in stadia with pristine fields that never get muddy.  Go back to the 60s/70s and the Raiders had to get rid of their silver numbers because TV couldn't handle the glare.

17 Yeah, these are bad. Maybe…

I can't tell because the difference between "bone" and white is relatively small, and I'm not great at this stuff, but it looks like the sides of the bone pants (oh god, why do I have to write the phrase "bone pants"??????) may be white as well.

Yeah, these are bad. Maybe not as bad as some of the things to come out of Florida over the last several years, but that's not the bar you should be trying to clear.

36 The whole ensemble is like…

The whole ensemble is like they went with the pu-pu platter of design options.

They seriously might have. This reeks of design-by-committee. Maybe some individual had a vision at some point, but then everyone with clout in the organization had to have their say, and now there's a white patch on the off-white and a sleeve number on this one not that one and slightly different fonts for every number and...

37 that's the way movies are…

that's the way movies are made now too.

You write some, but it has to have this and this, and this person must have a role somewhere... but the test audience didn't like this theme, so let's make it that and before you know it you have a trilogy/universe of incomprehensible shit.

20 Left one -> great (except…

Left one -> great (except that for the fading yellow on the numbers, which instead looks decent on the all-blue)

Right one -> terrible

I also don't understand why "LOS ANGELES RAMS" on the left shoulder is written with different size/style on the all-white jersey (it also looks like a separate patch).

22 Gradient numbers ... OMG …

Gradient numbers ... OMG ...

It's like the time I left something in bleach when I was a 20-something single guy who'd just left home ...

27 Some marketing department…

Some marketing department got a whole bunch of money and spent every dime on it.

Sometimes less is more. The Browns figured it out, the Bucs, the Steelers, Bears, Cowboys, Packers already know this for a few decades...

30 Yes, most of the great…

Yes, most of the great franchises in sports don't mess with their uniforms.  Maybe slight tweaks here and there.  Teams like the Yankees, Dodgers, Cardinals, Cubs, Canadiens, Lakers, Celtics, Knicks, etc.  Sometimes they modernize things a bit, but overall keep the same basic design and color schemes.  And more recently they have taken advantage of the "alternate" uniform craze to exercise their creative bone.

I think part of what makes them great and popular franchises is their sticking to tradition.

35 I'm fine with the white-on…

I'm fine with the white-on-white (although the ugly yellow stripe could at least be blue). They can call it bone white, but bone is not a color and bone-on-bone sounds like a gruesome injury. The Rams have donned some great uniforms through their time, back to the blue numbers on yellow in Cleveland. There are various shades of both blue and the yellow/gold used to make some the best NFL uniforms through all those decades. Instead, we get another bad, junior-college art-student design that only sports-hating teenager would love. And shaded gradient numbers should be banned now

38 Paul Lukas had a reader…

Paul Lukas had a reader describe the "bone" ones as dishwater, which is hilarious and appropriate.

These are hideous. Not as awful as the new Falcons gradient set, but really, really bad.

What a horrible missed opportunity.

40 I love the new home jerseys…

I love the new home jerseys almost as much as I hate the new "Bone on Bone ones." It's not the grey part, that's fine. It's the stupid stitching pattern, the weird gold patch at the back, the nametag LA rams part. Like seriously, you look like a best buy employee who had to put on a Rams jersey, but you still needed your name clearly visible. So fucking bad.

At least the home jerseys are nice.

41 The Rams helmet will never not be cool

Their uniforms last year were excellent! Absolutely hilarious that they've managed to come up with something this bad to replace one of the best unis in the league.
