The Minnesota Vikings have made their defensive star the second-highest paid safety in the league. Harrison Smith has signed a four-year, $64-million extension that includes over $26 million in guarantees. Only Seattle's Jamal Adams has a higher average salary at the position.

Smith, who turned 32 in February, has missed only six starts in the last seven seasons. A five-time Pro Bowler and former first-team All-Pro, Smith was among the top 10 safeties in defeats last year.

Good I think. Not more than Adams but he is older. Not sure how players like him age though.

For better or worse, the Vikings treat their older veterans who have been terrifically productive very well, unless they've been consistent A-holes to teammates and coaches. On balance, I think it is wise.

It's the only explanation, but I don't get it, really, either. All I have is that guys like Jared Allen, Kevin Williams and Adrian Peterson have all spoken very highly of their treatment in their last years with the team.
