Patriots Sign Dolphins TE Mike Gesicki
NFL Offseason - The New England Patriots have signed former Miami Dolphins tight end Mike Gesicki to a one-year deal worth up to $9 million, according to a report from ESPN’s Field Yates.
The Dolphins drafted Gesicki in the second round of the 2018 draft. He appeared in 81 of 82 possible games over that five year stretch.
Gesicki played the 2022 season on the franchise tag, but saw his smallest role in the offense since his rookie season. Gesicki finished the season with 32 receptions on 52 targets for 362 yards and five touchdowns.
Gesicki finished the 2022 season 24th among tight ends in both DVOA and DYAR. He has one top-10 DYAR season, finishing sixth in 2020.
The Patriots kicked off their offseason by moving tight end Jonnu Smith to the Atlanta Falcons for a seventh-round pick.

IDK about this move. The idea in Miami was that he was more a big WR than a TE. The problem was, he can't block at all. Even at WR you need to throw blocks for those screen plays. I always felt bad for the WR next to him on those screens because you knew Mike was wiffing his block and his DB was blowing up the play. He's a big target around the goal line and on obvious passing situations, a nice pass receiving TE. The thing is, him in the huddle signals obvious pass, but there are times where you're obviously passing. Much like the Parker situation last year, Miami wasn't exactly worried about losing Gesicki. I think Gesicki has more upside than Parker, though. There are situations where he does make plays. Parker is such a more frustrating player, I can't see him ever making it with the Pats. You could see Gesicki throwing up another 700 yrd season with the Pats.

Seems like a lot to pay for a one-dimensional TE. Belichick does seem to be better, though, at talent evaluation of inter-division players he sees multiple times a year, and NE needs someone who can catch the ball, which Gesicki's good at when he's healthy, so maybe it works out for NE and Gesicki.

I'm not sure I like this situation for him on a one year prove-it deal, but he's a talented player in the DeVante Parker mold, so the Patriots ought to know what they're getting. He was always enthusiastic and had a great attitude. I wish him well.
