NFL Names Alberto Riveron Head of Officiating

I wish I could tell you I had some kind of insightful, complicated analysis of this move, but I don't. Alberto Riveron will move from the field to the head office to replace Dean Blandino, at least partially. The league also has announced Russell Yurk will head up the league’s replay department, so he's the guy who will be in charge of the central decision-making on replay every Sunday.

The Future of Football

Really interesting longform feature over at SB Nation asking how football can change over the next few years in order to reduce concussions and keep the sport going. Spencer Hall has a couple of points I particularly agree with. One, that change has to come at the high school level even more than the NFL level, because high school football is how most people play the sport.

Mike Tanier's Draft Grades

Grading draft picks immediately on draft day is silly, but at least Mike Tanier's draft grades will be a) funny and b) include intelligent analysis of these teams' strengths and weaknesses. So go check out our old compatriot. He'll be grading every pick all weekend long, all the way through Mr. Irrelevant.

QBASE 2017

How iffy is the 2017 quarterback class? Even our highest-rated prospect has us questioning the numbers. While the top of the draft is full of risky picks, though, we might have found a solid mid-round sleeper.

QBASE 2017 (ESPN version)

Here are our QBASE projections for the Class of 2017. It's not a great year for quarterback prospects. Commentary includes a long discussion of the history of quarterbacks with only one or two years of college experience.

OK folks, the full 2017 regular-season schedule is out. Go ahead and discuss which teams you think got screwed by the distribution of road games or how often they have to play teams coming off bye weeks.

All 32 NFL Head Coaches Ranked

Here's a little item for offseason debate: Pete Prisco ranks all 32 NFL head coaches at CBSSports.com. You know who is No. 1, but Mike McCarthy at No. 2? I think this list is a bit too dependent on wins and losses without looking at the underlying questions of a) what a coach contributes with game management and b) when a coach adds to the talents of his players, and when he wins primarily because of those talents.
