FO Mailbag: Do Bad Teams Win 56-21?

According to "Guts and Stomps" theory, winning big is the sign of a great team. So is last week's 56-21 Eagles win over the Lions proof that the Eagles are on their way to a winning season? Not necessarily... (Click to read more.)

Missing: The Chargers Running Game

Over at Pro Football Reference, Doug Drinen points out just how dramatic -- and historically unprecedented -- the decline of the San Diego running game has been this year. Our stats say the same. San Diego is actually in last place in Adjusted Line Yards right now.

Week 3 DVOA Ratings

Hey, remember when the projection system said that Tampa Bay would win the NFC South and New Orleans was a one-year wonder? Remember how we all assumed the numbers were incorrect? Whoops. Plus: Historic starts in New England, Pittsburgh, and Dallas.

2007 Quick Reads: Week 3

Sure, Kurt Warner had a great game, but was it the right move for the future of the Arizona Cardinals? Also this week: Lots of guys flip at halftime, DeShaun Foster rips the Atlanta Falcons for the 974th time, and Marc Bulger channels ABBA.

Ex-Cowboy Finds Faith After Football

This is the Dallas Morning News article Peter King references in MMQB today, about Shlomo Veingrad, the Green Bay and Dallas lineman who is now an ultra-Orthodox Jew. Of particular interest around here, since I am the first sportswriter in history to slip Rosh Hashanah-related jokes into an ESPN article. (Requires free registration)

Panthers' Much-Hyped Defensive Line Has One Sack -- by a Reserve

I too am sick and tired of waiting for the Carolina Panthers to live up to their potential. Enough already. I don't blame Julius Peppers, who is double-teamed constantly and often drops into pass coverage. I don't blame Steve Smith, who is a near-deity. Nearly everyone else on this team just seems like a massive disappointment. One of the reasons I think the Texans are an early fluke is that I don't think the win over Carolina was some sort of massive victory over a tough opponent. Am I right? Discuss.

FO Mailbag: Division Games

The Colts beat the Titans by just two points. The Broncos beat the Raiders by just three points. The 49ers beat two division rivals by a combined four points. Division games are always closer with more upsets. Right? Well, not really... (Click link for more.)

Week 2 DVOA Ratings

New England and Pittsburgh reign supreme, while last year's two miracle teams sit at the bottom. This week's (very extended) commentary looks at past teams who defied their projections early, to find out what history says about hope in Houston and pessimism in Philadelphia. Note: DEN, OAK, PHI, WAS now fixed.

2007 Quick Reads: Week 2

Carson Palmer threw for more than 400 yards and six touchdowns against Cleveland this week. It's the best quarterback performance of the week according to FO stats, but where does it stand among the best quarterback performances of the DVOA era? The answer: Absolutely nowhere. That and more in the latest Quick Reads. Please note that the Denver-Oakland game is not included because the data parser inexplicably stopped in the middle of the second quarter.

Another Reason to Love Chris Cooley

Just in case you didn't see this link on Deadspin. Chris Cooley is awesome. Seriously, how does a night out with your fiancee and in-laws end up at a strip club, anyway?
