Slate PFP Excerpts

Here's a link to the three articles on Slate this week adapted from PFP 2007. The first one adapts the Indianapolis chapter and talks about the Colts and their uncopyable blueprint. The second one talks about sleepers for 2007: Washington, Jacksonville, and Green Bay. The third one talks about the game charting project and our quest for coaches' film. (Click the 1, 2, 3 on the top to read the three different articles.)

Here are the 2007 DVOA projections, including 10,000 simulations of the 2007 season to give each team's chances of making the playoffs or winning the division. Selvin Young Latest Out of Nowhere Back to Excel for Broncos

OK, let's check our copies of PFP 07 to make sure all the out-of-nowhere players who made rosters yesterday were covered in Going Deep. Kenton Keith of the Colts? Check. Lance Moore of the Saints? Check. Matt Gutierrez of the Patriots? Got him too. Selvin Young of the Broncos? Wait, who the heck is Selvin Young, and why is he causing a roto stampede? (For those curious, we also missed Carolina tight end Jeff King and Green Bay's new fourth-string running back, Ryan Grant.)

Jaguars to Cut Leftwich, Name Garrard Starter

OK, hold your horses on those DVOA and KUBIAK projections, folks. This changes everything. More news as we get it. I know Leftwich didn't look spectacular in the preseason, but this really looks like an overreaction by Del Rio. I'm off to go re-figure things. If you are in Indianapolis, you should be happy today.

Pardon the [Fantasy Football] Interruption

If you are Nate Silver, BP guru and creator of the almighty PECOTA, how do you prepare for a fantasy football draft? You take Football Outsiders' KUBIAK projections, and do your own little magic to them. Check out this BP "Unfiltered" post, where Nate shows how he looked not just at the KUBIAK projections, but at the likelihood that each player would be available at certain spots in the draft.

Peter King's Top 500

This is the kind of idea only an editor could love, because it only gives a writer headaches. For the SI season preview, they asked Peter King to put together a list of the top 500 players in the NFL, from Peyton Manning and Tom Brady to Samson Satele and Chris Simms. Guaranteed to cause controversy, not just among fans, but among players -- Ray Lewis and Rodney Harrison are pissed off. An interesting note: When Peter writes about showing the list to various people to get their input, he forgot one.
