Bears Lock In Lovie With New Deal

FOXSports.com's Jay Glazer broke the news that the NFC Champion Chicago Bears have ended months of speculation by re-upping head coach Lovie Smith. The Bears will announce the deal and have a press conference on Thursday. Although numbers haven't been released, the contract will take Smith out of the realm of the greviously underpaid (he made $1.4 million in 2006), and into the elite level of Jeff Fisher, John Fox and others in that top-end tax bracket.

Five Observations from the Combine: Monday

Monday is the final day that Football Outsiders will have a presence at this year's Scouting Combine (Aaron's back in Bah-ston), and I wanted to wrap up our work with a final five observations. Overall, this place is the content equivalent of the Mr. Creosote scene in Monty Python's The Meaning of Life, where the fat man simply eats until he blows up.

Jared Zabransky - The New Dr. Z

It may have done so for much of the football-watching world, but quarterback Jared Zabransky of Boise State isn't about to let one game define him. Although it was in one of the most thrilling postseason games ever in any sport, Zabransky's MVP performance in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl is not all there is to the 6'2, 219-pound quarterback. For Zabransky, it's really about a skillset of intangibles that extend far beyond the measurables.

Five Observations from the Combine: Sunday

In Sunday's Scouting Combine wrapup, Aaron talks about the rising market for players of all skill levels and why a simple series of cap increases may not be the entire reason, Kevin Kolb as measured by the David Lewin projection system, why quarterback JaMarcus Russell and certain tight ends may be falling off the map, and the Legend of Zak DeOssie.

Michael Allan and the Sleeper Hold

An article I wrote for Scout.com yesterday from about Whitworth TE Michael Allan, the only Division III player invited to the Combine this year. He really helped himself with his workouts yesterday - even the scouts and analysts who were high on him already are newly impressed. Mike Mayock went out of his way to mention Allan in his press conference. It's thought that he raised himself up one or two rounds from late second-day status yesterday in the RCA Dome alone.

NFL Prospects Head to Boot Camp

With the Scouting Combine fast approaching, approximately 320 college players are preparing for one whale of a job interview at the RCA Dome. Two of them, Mario Henderson and Gabe Hall, are getting ready at the Parisi Speed School in Fair Lawn, New Jersey, and they're profiled in this New York Times article.
