Commissioner Goodell Signs Five-Year Extension

The 2017 NFL season has been most famous for political protests; on-again, off-again domestic violence suspensions; and most recently, exceedingly violent behavior and safety concerns. For all that chaos, however, the league is still clearly making boatloads of money, because today they extended commissioner Roger Goodell to a five-year contract worth up to $200 million. That's $40 million per year; for comparison's sake, the league's highest-paid player, Matthew Stafford, will average about $26 million per year over the course of his contract.

College Football Playoff: Clemson-Alabama, Oklahoma-Georgia

Three spots were obvious, one was up for debate, but the College Football Playoff field is set: the No. 1 Clemson Tigers will face the No. 4 Crimson Tide in the Sugar Bowl, and the No. 2 Oklahoma Sooners will play the No. 3 Georgia Bulldogs in the Rose Bowl on January 1.

It will be a moot point by then, but it will still be interesting to see how the FEI ratings view Alabama and the Ohio State Buckeyes when we gather that data later in the week.

Giants Benching Eli Manning

Eli Manning has started 210 consecutive regular-season games, the second-longest streak by a quarterback in NFL history behind Brett Favre's 297. He will not start a 211th consecutive game, though. The Giants announced on Tuesday that Geno Smith will start at quarterback against the Oakland Raiders. They said they will use the next five games to evaluate Smith and Davis Webb, a third-round rookie out of California, though they did not say that Webb will play this week.
