Broncos Consider All Options

OK, folks, where is Jake Plummer headed in 2007? I suppose the Broncos could keep him, but he won't be a happy camper. I'm a big fan of the Cleveland idea. It just isn't happening for Charlie Frye, and that team could be ready to contend. Plummer is not a star, but he's not as bad as he looked last year.

With Penalties Down in ’05, NFL Reverses a Trend

Penalties declined in 2006 for the first time in six years. According to this New York Times article, "[p]enalties for offensive holding (down 34 percent) and defensive holding (down 32 percent) were among those showing the sharpest decline from 2005. Penalties for delay of game, defensive offside, false starts, pass interference and roughing the passer decreased at least 15 percent." Surprisingly, roughing-the-passer penalties also decreased this year. By 17 percent. (I don't believe it either.)

Sources: Cowboys Pick Garrett, but Role Is Undecided

This makes sense: "According to knowledgeable sources, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has decided to hire Jason Garrett at least to be Dallas' offensive coordinator -- and possibly to be the successor to retired head coach Bill Parcells." No need to get caught in pesky details like job title and responsibilities. I imagine they'll just figure that out later.

NFL and Players Reach Deal on Drug Testing

From the AP: "The NFL and its players union have agreed to more extensive testing for performance-enhancing drugs and have added the blood-boosting substance EPO to the league's list of banned substances." Sounds like a good start. (Free registration/bugmenot required.)

Fans Could Get Reason Not to Shout

From the Cleveland Plain Dealer: "The league is developing plans to put radios in the helmets of all offensive players, which would allow them to hear the quarterback's signals and line calls, essentially negating the advantage a home team's '12th man' provides." I haven't read this elsewhere, but it seems like a big deal. Commissioner Roger Goodell says he's not trying to take away the "12th man," but he wants "teams [to] perform at the highest possible level in a way that will allow ... fans to enjoy the experience as much as possible." Yeah, put me down for "No" on this one.
