At FiveThirtyEight, we looked at the conundrum of drafting Penn State running back Saquon Barkley in the top five, especially if you're the Browns or Giants. While workhorse backs have been romanticized for decades of NFL history, the league has shifted away from them in favor of more passing and a by-committee approach to the position. We also have not seen first-round backs outperform those taken in later rounds. The rushing DVOA since 2002 is the second lowest in the first round, and there's essentially no difference in yards per carry among the seven rounds. Running backs truly can be found anywhere, and Super Bowl-winning teams this century have also proven that.

It's Schedule Release Day across the NFL, but apparently it's fashion runway day in the state of Florida.

Fascinating article from The MMQB about the complicated world of tax filing for NFL players. They owe state taxes based on where they play and practice, not where they live, which means filing a number of different state returns each year. It also means that playing teams in tax-free states can dramatically change a player's net income, to the point where it makes sense to specifically spend the bye week in a tax-free state.

Fair catches on kickoffs received inside a team's own 25-yard line will result in a touchback beginning in 2018.

The Rams had the NFL's most stable offensive line last year, while Detroit's line resembled five simultaneous games of musical chairs. (Click to read more.)

A shocking NFL trade. As first announced by Adam Schefter on Twitter, the Patriots are dealing Brandin Cooks -- after only one year in New England -- plus a fourth-round pick to the Los Angeles Rams for the Rams' first-round pick (23rd overall) and a sixth-round pick. Cooks will fill the Sammy Watkins role in the Rams offense, opening up space underneath for Cooper Kupp and Robert Woods. The Patriots essentially rented Cooks for one year and used that year to upgrade from the 32nd pick in 2017 to the 23rd pick in 2018.

The Georgia Bullddogs' dynamic duo should be on NFL rosters at some point in the next 72 hours. Which will be the better pro? That depends on what kind of running back you're looking for.
