Batch Prepares to Take the Reins; Roethlisberger Has Hyperextended Knee

Ben Roethlisberger is scheduled to have an MRI on his knee later today, but in the meantime the Steelers' third-string QB, Charlie Batch, is preparing to make his first start since 2001. Earlier in the week, backup Tommy Maddox went down with the same calf injury that shelved Jerome Bettis for three games (apparently it's contagious). While everyone in Pittsburgh would prefer to see Big Ben under center next Sunday, things could be much worse (just ask Brooks Bollinger), especially when you consider that Batch almost lost his job to Brian St. Pierre during training camp.

Update 2pm: Roethlisberger has a hyperextended knee and bone bruise, an injury not as severe as originally thought. The team is even saying he could play next week.

The Steelers signed Rod Rutherford to the practice squad. I suppose is they were playing the Redskins, it would be good to have the left-handed Rutherford for the scout team.

In any case, they are now talking about having both Ben and Maddox practice this week, even though Cowher calls Batch "the starter by default."

Um, is it just me, or did a whole bunch of posts, and not just in this thread, disappear?

I know there were more in here before, and there are a whole bunch from the Gameday Thread that are just gone.

Never mind. I saw the message about the server error.

DIagnosis published in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (linked): hyperextended knee, bone bruise.

According to the same article, Maddox will return to practice this week, and Roethlisberger's situation is "we'll see." (Ya think?)

I expect Batch will get a bunch of practice time in any case. The Jaguars are pretty feisty, and Batch hasn't throw the ball in a real game since, oh, about when the Lions were last a playoff team.

Has anyone else noticed that Ben seems to writhe around in pain a lot, but never seems to have a significant injury?

SS: I hope he'll get practice time. Cowher said he's the starter as of right now.

Although I think that's insane, unless Maddox isn't 100%.

#5: Well, it's not significant only in the sense that it doesn't require surgery. A hyperextended knee basically means his leg bent in a direction opposite to what God intended (just watch the replay to see what that means), and a bone bruise means that the inside of his kneecap was damaged by the impact... All in all, I'm rather skeptical of him even practicing this week, much less suiting up on Sunday.
