Shockey: Coughlin Wrong to Bench Burress

Tom Coughlin's rule that players have to be five minutes early to every meeting is silly. Why not just tell them when the meeting starts and treat them like the adults they are by starting it at the stated time, not five minutes before the stated time?

But as long as it's the coach's rule, the players have to abide by it, and Plaxico Burress didn't last week. Because of that, Coughlin sat him during the Giants' first drive. Jeremy Shockey says that hurt the offense, and he's not happy about it.

"I understand his point, but it's really not fair," Shockey said of Coughlin's decision to bench Burress early. "It affects the whole team."

Well, if that's what Jeremy says, it must be so...

He could get mad at Burress for not showing up to work on time.

I think Coughlin ought to come up with a punishment for Burress that doesn't hurt the rest of the team. Maybe fine him or make him run laps or something, but it's silly to sabotage your team's winning chances because of a discpinary problem you have with a player (Marty Shottenhimer, I'm looking at you.)

I agree on both counts. It is a stupid rule (if you have to be there 5 minutes before 8 AM, then it's not an 8 AM meeting; it's a 7:55 meeting), but even if it's dumb, not enforcing it (or enforcing it inconsistently) makes it even worse.

I would bench Jeremy Shockey for failing to help his team, more often than not, throughout the season.

Nice haircut, though.

As for Burress, why is this whole thing not a reality TV program? Tom Coughlin. Plaxico. Shockey. The other Manning.

Sehorn can stop by the locker room every once in awhile and talk trash.

You MUST put this on TV!

Of course, while that's his rule (and it is dumb), we don't know how late Burress was. Maybe he showed up a half hour late (or 35 minutes late, in Coughlin's world). That would be different than just a few minutes late.

I would not be at all surprised if Burress, not exactly one for strict discipline, had been a half-hour late. Cowher gave him some latitude in Pittsburgh, which kept him happy. When Burress is happy, he is a great contributor and a team player. When he's not... I don't really know what to expect, but it won't be the Burress Pittsburgh had last year.
Burress may be out on the market in a year or two with a nice low price on him, and some team is going to make a big pickup.

Burress also was not late for just one meeting, but for two meetings. Coughlin was on Mike and the Mad Dog yesterday and pretty much said that Burress wouldn't have been benched for the beginning of the game if he had only been late for one meeting.

Sitting Burress early on didn't cause the Giants to lose the game. They drove the ball down the field in their first drive without him. Shockey should be mad at the defense for being unable to stop LT2 in the second half.

Precisely when did it become one of the Laws of Thermodynamics that a talented wide receiver must be a complete pain in the ass? I'm beginning to rue the development of the forward pass in the game of football.

The Giants defense didn't exactly stop LT in the first half either.

Although, they did prevent him from throwing any touchdown passes in the first half.
