KC DE Allen Requests Move

Chiefs defensive end Jared Allen is requesting a trade after the team failed to offer the 24-year-old defensive end a long-term contract. Allen, a restricted free agent, will be tendered a contract for this upcoming season but will be an unrestricted free agent next year. For some reason, Allen talks about wanting to end his career in Kansas City; this is already on his mind at 24. The piece also notes that Allen led the league in 2006 with six fumble recoveries.

Oh, and first person to make Allen-to-the-Bengals jokes loses the thread.

I don't get the Allen to Bengals joke. Can someone explain it?

That makes no sense, it's not like he's their running back.

2-Allen's had a couple of DUIs and spent some time in jail for the second one.

RE 2, Jared Allen and the Bengals both like to get liquored up and then drive around until someone arrests them.

Finish his career in KC? Maybe he's saying he'll come back in ten years or something.

I think Allen would look very good as a Bronco... hurt the Chiefs and improve our D-Line pass rush.... but I'm not holding my breath because his price as a trade/restricted FA is probably too high.

#9: Besides, Patrick Kerney wants to rejoin his defensive line coach in Denver.

Does anyone else think that the Chiefs, despite not wanting to trade Allen, would trade him and a mid-round pick (3rd or 4th) for Matt Schaub? Seems like a win-win for both teams, unless Allen misses time for the DUI conviction.

Allen is probably going to get hit with a 4 game suspension next season. He blew his chance at a big contract this year by getting multiple DUIs. Apparently he had a problem with that in college as well.

Jared Allen is the smartest drunk driver in the NFL and has no business being compared to the Bengals. Instead of submitting to a breath or blood test, he took the penalty of losing his drivers license for a period of time. However, since he is only accused of drunk driving--there is no proof without the tests--he was not suspended according to the NFL's substance abuse policy, and did not lose four paychecks. While one could argue driving drunk is never smart, I'd say his handling of the situation was.

There are two DUI convictions? I didn't hear about the one last month, and I was sure the first was never a DUI. Perhaps I was misinformed previously.

In 'defense' of the Bengals: I'm not sure how many of their DUI offenses were in Ohio, but refusing to take the test is not a viable option for any that were. Refusing the test brings an automatic license suspension (longer than what you'd get for failing), then they take the test anyway. See link under "Implied Consent Laws".

Yesterday at the combine, Dick Vermiel was talking about " standing up for a player". It's when there is crunch time in the war room and everybody is fighting over " their" prospect. Vermiel said he stood up and fought for Jared Allen in round 4, because he said he had a motor like Grant Wistrom.
