Jaguars Unveil THEIR New Uniforms

Not to be outdone by the Lions (because really, who wants to be outdone by the Lions? at anything?), Jacksonville has also come up with new uniforms for 2009. The color scheme is basically the same, though they've added some goofy contrast stripes (that actually make the black pants a lot more palatable), and the black helmets now have "a teal-like glitter." More photos available here.

uniforms gooder than old ones. these are really good. team still crap but unfiroms good. best uniforms is league is still Raiders. others than good are- beras, Redskins, Gants

by Marko :: Wed, 04/22/2009 - 9:09pm

As a lifelong beras fan, I agree that the beras have one of the goodest unfiroms in the league and that the Raiders, Redskins and Gants also have good unfiroms.

by Raiderjoe :: Wed, 04/22/2009 - 9:20pm

after thinking about this more, have to make list of top 5 best unfiorms n NFL

1. Raiders
2. Beasr
3. Jaguars
4. Giants
5. Redskins
6. Texans

Giants and Redskins is tough choice. That;s almost like a tie becacuse it's so tough to say which uniform is better..

by Bob_StudioZ (not verified) :: Wed, 04/22/2009 - 10:40pm

Good idea for a post. Here's my list, in no particular order:

1. Eagles
2. Saints
3. Raiders
4. Chiefs
5. Steelers

The 5 WORST (also in no order)

1. Dolphins (can you say 'Sissy colors'?
2. Rams (they were better in the old days when they were just dark blue and white)
3. Chargers (They could be cool, but powder blue???)
4. Cowboys (the ultimate corporate uniform)
5. Bengals (yuck)

by Brendan Scolari (not verified) :: Wed, 04/22/2009 - 11:40pm

Amazingly, I am like the complete opposite of you. Here's my favorites:

1. Chargers (Powder blues are the best uni's in the league.
2. Raiders
3. Cowboys (Classic)
4. Patriots
5. Bengals (The stripes are awesome.)
Also, I have to say the Colts have great uniforms. They might be ahead of the Bengals.

5 Worst:
1. Browns (Ugly and helmet is stupid).
2. Ravens (Don't like purple or the helmet. The logo at midfield is cool.)
3. Giants (Plain and boring.)
4. Bears (Again, dark and boring.)
5. Eagles (Hate the helmets.)

by The Guy You Don't Want to Hear (not verified) :: Thu, 04/23/2009 - 12:50am

This is an odd topic for discussion, isn't it? I will post my list anyway.

1. Baltimore Ravens (Awesome purple and black, good bird logo, slightly different numbering type that I do like.)
2. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (I love the colors and the flag logo.)
3. Jacksonville Jaguars (The new ones didn't change their ranking for me.)
4. Seattle Seahwaks (I love the colors, but I still don't like the angry bird logo.)
5. Cincinnati Bengals (Totally agreed on the stripes.)

1. Cleveland Browns (Orange is ugly. Brown is ugly. Orange and brown together is hideous.)
2. San Diego Chargers power blue (It's a pretty color, yes, but . . . soooo wimpy.)
3. Buffalo Bills (That logo is so ugly it destroys otherwise okay uniforms.)
4. Miami Dolphins (Ugly color choices again.)
5. Green Bay Packers (I know it's borderline blasphemy to many, but green and yellow are just horrid together and the ugly G doesn't help things.)

by The Ninjalectual :: Thu, 04/23/2009 - 1:41pm

1. Chargers (Powder blues are the best uni's in the league)
2. Bears (classic)
3. Redskins
4. Jags
5. Browns (simplicity is a good thing)

1. Cowboys (plain and boring)
2. Lions (maybe only because they lose so much)
3. Giants (Plain and boring)
4. Bills (their cool logo is wasted on those clashing uniforms)
5. Buccaneers (nasty color scheme)

Listen, not to be a shill for the team or anything, but the uniforms are anything except corporate.

They have some of the oddest quirks in their uniforms of any team in the league and one of the more unique Jerseys. I mean, you can still hate their look, that's fair. But I don't think it's "corporate" (though commercialized, sure... what about this team ISN'T commercialized?)

As a Gants fan, I agree that the Gants unfiorms is one of the goodest. In fact, I think than the Gants unfirom is gooder than the Redskins AND the Raiders becacuse they are the only teams that are spelled correctly.

-P.S. Damn you, spell checker.

by Costa :: Wed, 04/22/2009 - 10:39pm

I like the kool shine they added to the helmets, but the rest of the changes are a step back to me.

As for my own top 5 unis: 1-Bears, 2-Packers, 3-Steelers*, 4-Cowboys, 5-Colts just barely edging out the Raiders

* Steelers would be higher if they ditched the dumb italicized numbers and went back to the block numbers.

by Jimmy Oz (not verified) :: Wed, 04/22/2009 - 11:34pm

All the new uniforms are pretty dire.

Bring back Denver's Orange Crush, San Diego's Powder Blues, and Tampa's Tangerine Dream!! Best colours are Green Bay - go Australia! Philly should change back to the Randall Cunningham era jerseys instead of the crappy dark green. Rams should go back to yellow instead of gold cos they look like they're wearing their sisters' gold lame pants.

I don't know what colour the Tampa jersey is. Its like some reddy-orange-crimson mix... like wtf...??

The ones that keep it old school are the best. Its not like its camoflauge that needs to be improved.

And then there's the defunct Orlando Thunder's uniform - click my name if you haven't seen it before, you will be amazed.

Sweet bastard jesus!

Crap, that's horrendous. I suppose I should thank the Orlando Thunder for making the Oregon Ducks' neon-grid unis only the second-ugliest uniforms in the sports world.

by Justin Zeth :: Wed, 04/22/2009 - 11:49pm

1. Chargers powder blues
2. Rams
3. Panthers
4. Cardinals
5. Steelers

(I liked the Dolphins uniforms a lot before they switched to their current number style.

0. Anything monochrome
1. Bengals
2. Browns
3. Giants road uniforms with the red numbers
4. Cowboys
5. Vikings

by The Guy You Don't Want to Hear (not verified) :: Thu, 04/23/2009 - 1:07am

I forgot about those Giants uniforms! They are hideous!

By the way, do special occasion uniforms count? Denver's NFL 75th anniversary uniforms were awful (http://www.fansedge.com/Images/Product/31-60/31-60315-F.jpg), there were those hideous "throwback" things (I'm not sure they're really throwbacks.) the Eagles wore a couple of years ago (linked in name), and of course there are the Steelers' horrendous "throwbacks" around the same time (http://static.nfl.com/static/content/public/image/getty/2007/75557842RS0...).

by The Guy You Don't Want to Hear (not verified) :: Thu, 04/23/2009 - 1:19am

I found a site with pictures of all of the 1994 uniforms. I had forgotten just how ugly so many of them were. I will say, however, that the Vikings' road uniforms from that year are awesome. Chicago, Green Bay, Philadelphia (the same as their uniforms I mentioned above, so apparently they are throwbacks), and New England stand out as bad, in addition to the aforementioned Denver monstrosities.

by AlanSP :: Thu, 04/23/2009 - 2:23am

Oh man, those Eagles throwback were awful. When were those supposed to be from? They did, however, have the nice feature of making Kevin Curtis invisible to the Lions' secondary.

by matt millen's brain (not verified) :: Thu, 04/23/2009 - 8:50am

According to Wikipedia, the Eagles and before them, the Frankford Yellowjackets, wore blue and yellow unis until the early 40s. The blue and yellow color scheme came from the flag of Philadelphia.

I wonder what kind of unis the Steagles wore in 1944.

by Jerry :: Thu, 04/23/2009 - 6:54pm

From http://www.uniwatchblog.com/pro-football-uniform-history-project/

"Steagles: Silver helmets with green earpieces; green jersey with white sleeve panel. white side panel, white neck and white numerals; gray pants; green socks with two separated white stripes."

So Eagles uniforms.

For people who like this stuff, http://www.uniwatchblog.com is strongly recommended.

by Tundrapaddy (not verified) :: Thu, 04/23/2009 - 2:22pm

Based on their track record, it wasn't the throwback unis that made Kevin Curtis invisible to the Lions' secondary. More likely the Lions' facemasks.

Or the Lions' coaching. Or the Lions.

by Solomon (not verified) :: Thu, 04/23/2009 - 12:52am

Do the Jags new black pants have stripes? For some reason, I hate uniform pants that lack stripes. The teal jerseys with white pants look is a good one. I think they should wear all white on the road and ditch the black pants altogeher.

Good unis -- 49ers (the best), Colts, Buccaneers, Cowboys
Sometimes good unis -- Bengals (but not the black pants), Chargers (but not powder blue), Saints (gold pants good, black pants bad), Eagles (not green pants)

Bad unis -- Redskins (the color shades look ugly), Bills (the worst), Seahawks (home monchrome ones are awful), any other monochrome scheme (except white)

Call me crazy, but I actually liked the bright orange Buccanneer unis from years past. The color seems to work for U. of Tennessee.

by iapetus (not verified) :: Thu, 04/23/2009 - 5:36am

Yes, the black pants have stripes. They look good to me. Not sold on the new logo - text looks cheap and messy to me. But the uniforms themselves are fine, and I love the new look helmet. Stills don't do it justice.

by matt millen's brain (not verified) :: Thu, 04/23/2009 - 1:46am

Best jerseys:

1) Bears
2) Colts
3) Redskins
4) Chiefs
5) Bills (throwback)
6) Jets

1) Broncos
2) Bills (new, especially the white)
3) Ravens
4) Titans (especially the powder blue)
5) Falcons

Best helmets:

1) Giants
2) Bears
3) Jets
4) Redskins
5) Chiefs

Worst helmets:

1) Broncos
2) Chargers
3) Falcons
4) Panthers
5) Texans

Special guest college uniform:

The Oregon Ducks have by far the worst uniform in all of sports.

by Tundrapaddy (not verified) :: Thu, 04/23/2009 - 2:26pm

Hold up! My Ducks have ONE of the worst uniforms in all of sports. And that Orlando Thunder (see previous posting by...someone) has actually outdone the ugly 'high school footballers like neon', grid-patterned monstrosity.

But thanks to Papa Deep-Pockets Knight (yes, the Nike founder and the patron saint of U of O), the Ducks have ~20 or so uniforms to choose form. Of which only 8 or so are cover-your-eyes awful.

Oh - make that 'unfrioms'. Sorry, Raiderjoe.

by ammek :: Thu, 04/23/2009 - 3:20am

No sartorial crime measures up to the expansion Broncos' striped socks.

The Colts' white uniforms with their old-fashioned vertical piping look great on tall, well-toned players. Not so great on Corey Simon.

My vote for worst ever uniform goes to NFL Europe's Amsterdam Admirals and their NASCAR-style jersey in fetching navy and orange.

by Bobman :: Thu, 04/23/2009 - 10:46pm

I guess the fashionistas ARE right: white is not slimming. But what on earth would look good on Corey Simon? A cloud? An igloo? Circut tent? Something from Delta Burke's or Kirstie Allie's closets? I'm trying, here... but coming up empty.

by Monkey Business (not verified) :: Thu, 04/23/2009 - 3:21am

How do the Colts not get a mention for "Best Uniforms"? They're so good, I think Colts fans would mutiny if they changed them.

Top 5:
1) Chargers (Powder Blue's)
2) Colts
3) Steelers
4) Raiders
5) Texans (Battle Red's)

Bottom 5:
1) Ravens
2) Jaguars
3) Cowboys
4) Panthers
5) Broncos

Colts with the best uniforms? That's like saying water is your favourite drink; or walking to the shops is your favourite pastime.

I must be the only person here who likes the Browns uniform. Very retro-looking (my grandparents had a room decorated like that in the 70's) - and too cool for helmet logos.

by Theo :: Thu, 04/23/2009 - 5:47am

My thoughts exactly on the colts uniforms. They don't wear uniforms, they wear a color.
I like the traditional browns unis, just as I like the traditional steelers unis, but the colors, orange with brown is just ugly.
I don't like the xfl/arena football style unis the Jax, , Panthers, Falcons and Broncos are wearing lately.
First and foremost a uniform should represent what the team is about, not trying to look tough, trendy or badass.

by Tundrapaddy (not verified) :: Thu, 04/23/2009 - 2:35pm

Well, I agree with some of what you said. You probably are the only person here who likes the Browns' uniform.

Complete lack of imagination. If they were smart, they'd at least darken the brown, and add some broken white stitch pattern. That way they'd at least have camouflage for play-action passes.

And an excuse for having plain-ass, brown uniforms.

by Podge (not verified) :: Thu, 04/23/2009 - 4:56am

Best uniforms:

1.) Bills throwback lighter-blue-than-their-normal one. Glorious.
2.) Chargers powder blues
3.) Lions last season. Not really seen these ones, but they don't seem too different.
4.) Eagles. They just look quite angry.
5.) Ravens, preferably the all black number, but the purple one is good too.
6.) Colts, preferably the blue one.

I would have the Rams in there, but only the home uniform with gold pants, not the white pants bull we've been peddling the last year or so.

1.) Browns. Horrible.
2.) Bucs. Just dull.
3.) Seahawks. They seem to blend in to the rain.
4.) Broncos. Blue and orange isn't a great mix.
5.) Chiefs.

We challenged the staff of the NFL to tweak our uniform so it would stand the test of time.

The NFL designs teams' uniforms? A bit overbearing, wouldn't you say?

by Joe T. :: Thu, 04/23/2009 - 8:53am

Really lousy redesign. They had the opportunity to improve there uniforms, which I've always found to be distasteful. Epic fail. The Lions did a substantially better job.

There has not been a good redesign since TB.

by iapetus (not verified) :: Thu, 04/23/2009 - 9:31am

Bad news, Joe: I don't think their redesign was intended to address the fact that you found the uniforms distasteful.

by Joe T. :: Thu, 04/23/2009 - 10:19am

I really don't understand the purpose of your statement. I thought the idea behind a comment thread was that readers could post their opinions and personal analysis on the topic at hand. Has something changed that I'm not aware of?

by Tundrapaddy (not verified) :: Thu, 04/23/2009 - 2:39pm

The problem was that you stated it as 'you opinion' (I've always found). Trained by years of FOX NFL booth commentary, we're all supposed to present our opinions as if they are grounded in fact, and therefore undeniable.

I'll give you a pass this time. Now make up for it by calling iapetus a troll.

Is it just me or will the 70's & 80's be looked back upon as the golden age of sports logos and uni's??? From before they all started looking like something from a UW-Stout Intro to Photoshop class. Maybe I'm just getting old, but something about the modernization of the whole affair, new logos and color schemes, has cheapened and regressed the overall asthetic.
Some NFL examples...
Patriots, Falcons, Vikings, Oilers, Cardinals, Eagles, etc..
Even the ones that looked ugly then are better than the new batch foisted upon us...Bengals, Seattle (not ugly then, just boring. Now they are both)...Broncos (as offensive as the old orange and blue combo may be to some, it doesn't even approach the crime-against-nature status currently inhabited by thier mid-90's makeover.)
Even the ones that try an updated-retro look (Jets, Giants, Chargers) miss the point and would be better off just bringing the old ones back straight up. Wait, is there any difference betwixt Namath-era Jets uni's and the newer versions?
Exceptions to the above...
Old Bucs - were a bad idea from the beginning. Who green-lighted those abortions?
70's & 80's Rams - should have never changed from white to yellow for the secondary color
Bills - their throwbacks are the tits...should dump the new look, go to the Jack Kemp Era look and use their 90's versions as throwbacks
And the Packers need to bring back the early 80's pants with the number on the hip. Sweet.

by Joe T. :: Thu, 04/23/2009 - 10:23am

I agree for the most part that the old uniforms seem better...I don't know if I'm just getting crotchety and old-fashioned ahead of my time, or if there is something seriously wrong with sports fashion/design right now.

by matt millen's brain (not verified) :: Thu, 04/23/2009 - 10:42am

20 years from now, the uniform styles that were popular in the 60s and 70s will be popular again. Normal number style, no extraneous lines, back to simpler designs.

In this regard, football is about 20-30 years behind baseball.The current style of uniforms will be viewed the same way we now view the Oakland A's unis of the 70s, or anything worn during the 1979 World Series.

by The Guy You Don't Want to Hear (not verified) :: Thu, 04/23/2009 - 12:10pm

It is considered a crime against nature to even mention those A's uniforms. People can die from such exposure.

by Unanimous (not verified) :: Thu, 04/23/2009 - 10:49am

The commonalities among what are regarded as the classic looks are a basic two color scheme with a neutral shade for an accent (white, grey, black). Stripes on the shoulder, sleeves and socks, nothing extraneous on the midsection (e.g. "panels" or connecting stripes from jersey to pants). Numbers that weren't stylized, streamlined, or drop-shadowed ((excepting Bears). The 49ers brought back the shadowed numbers in the 90's from their Joe Perry days, but to me, the zenith of Niner dress will forever be the 80's dynasty gear.))

by Eddo :: Thu, 04/23/2009 - 11:11am

I'll throw my hat into the ring.

1. Bears
2. Colts (I remember Paul Lukas going into great length about how Super Bowl XLI featured the best uniform matchup ever)
3. Redskins (even better with the dark jerseys)
4. Cowboys
5. Dolphins (I actually really like the teal, just because it's classic)

1. Seahawks
2. Falcons (used to be one of the best)
3. Vikings (used to be much better)
4. Broncos
5. Ravens

1. Rams
2. Saints (the fleur-de-lis it really cool)
3. Browns
4. Bears
5. Bengals

1. Falcons (their old one was awesome, I hate the bulked-up bird)
2. Titans (would be better without the flames)
3. Broncos
4. Panthers (it looks like a severed panther head)
5. Ravens

If you haven't seen any of variations below, they are worth checking out...
Saints black helmet from 1969 preseason

Raiders 1963 white logo helmets
Eagles early 70's white helmets

Some of it was rather surprising (plus I found out that FO readers completely disagree with me). Also surprising: Unless I made a mistake somewhere, we mentioned every team in the NFL.

1. Colts (18)

I somehow skipped the Cowboys, who finished with 1, tied with the Panthers, Jets, and Texans for 17. I also had the Rams on the list twice, which means they actually had -2, tied with the Texans for 21. No one else's number rankings change from those mistakes, since the Rams move out of 17 and into the next position at 21.
