49ers To Franchise Franklin

Although I mooted the possibility of Aubrayo Franklin signing with Denver in the opening Four Downs this week, it was always a slim possibility that he'd be allowed to leave San Francisco. It appears that won't be the case, as Adam Schefter reports that Franklin will receive the franchise tag from the 49ers, giving him about $7 million.

How good is he really? I didn't see a 49'ers game this season, and I haven't heard of him - so I don't have a clue.

I know his stats are great and it isn't exactly easy to find a starter-level 3-4 nose tackle.

I saw him play against the Colts, and found myself remarking "who is this guy?" several times. He looked pretty good to me. Not superstar good, but definitely someone you don't want to let walk from your team. Good move by SF, says me.

He's very, very good against the run. I did watch all of the Niner games this year and he really played well. PFF ranked him 16th amongst all defensive tackles, but that was mostly due to a poor pass rush ranking. Against the run he was only rated behind Sione Pouha, Pat Williams, Kelly Gregg, Vince Wilfork, Brodrick Bunkley, and Jay Ratliff and I'd say that's about right. Considering stopping the run is his primary job I'd say he's just below the elite tier of guys (the aforementioned Williams, Gregg, Wilfork, and Ratliff).

Nose tackles? Market? Yeah, right.

That wasn't really a small earthquake in Wisconsin. Just Ryan Pickett jumping up and down and going "YES!"
