The Saints' injury woes on defense get worse: Adam Schefter notes on Twitter that Charles Grant has been placed on IR with a triceps injury.

Blargh. One-and-done for my boys this year. Ugh.

I think it likely that this finishes them off, in terms of getting to Miami, much less winning in February. This really, really, really, sucks, and is the hideous part of the game, no matter what team you root for.

Man, that guy was good when he signed his new contract a few years ago. Since then, however, he's been totally unable to stay healthy, and he hasn't been an impact player even when healthy (I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and attribute his decline to injuries).

While this is disappointing (and further makes the point that you shouldn't play any starters at all in meaningless games), if Sedrick Ellis, Darren Sharper, the top 3 CBs and all 3 LBs are healthy for this first playoff game the Saints' defense will still be far better off than it has been at any time in the second half of the season.

Hopefully they'll move Anthony Hargrove to the starting DE spot and let DeMario Pressley get action as the backup DT. Hargrove has made some big plays this year as a backup DT, but he too often looks like he gets swallowed up, especially on running plays. Moving him back to his natural position could keep this from being a big a loss for the Saints.

I missed several of the Saints games this year, but I can't recall many memorable plays by Grant. Maybe this means opponents can double up on Will Smith more, but I assume they were already doing that. Getting Ellis back and losing Grant is probably a net improvement. That's a good thing, because I spent the last third of this season having 2008 flashbacks.

Losing Grant hurts less than people think.

The long run on Sunday, for example, was one of many times that he blew his assignment and let a big play occur.

Sports talk radio and sports message boards are the killing fields of intellectual discourse.

I've been studying the Saints Defense closely the past couple week. Charles Grant has been terrible.

I doubt they miss very much. As long as their LBs and DBs are healthy, they'll be fine. That's the real strength of that defense.

Don't forget McCray's "Driving with Pizza" incident, which may take another DE out of the Saint's rotation. (Or has McCray been invisible after they signed him away from Jags)?
