Jared DeVries Wants to Be a Lion. Seriously.

Jared DeVries, who missed all of 2009 with a torn Achilles tendon, has been released by the Detroit Lions. DeVries has started all of 32 games in his 11-year career. He says he could play a game right now and that he hopes to re-sign with Detroit, but Achilles injuries are often career-enders. The most interesting part of this story is this quote from DeVries: "I've been a Lion for 11 years and I'd like to finish a Lion." Why would anyone want to finish as a Lion?

Who? Who is this guy? I don't even know what position he plays. Are we going to announce every cut of every practice squad player on the extra points now?

When are we going to get an update on what the Houston Texans are going to do with Tutan Reyes?

Because they came in as a lamb?

PFR says he only started 3 games in his first seven seasons. How did he manage to hang around so long? Spec teams?

Good enough to be a consistent back-up, or a solid situational player?

Also, he'd like to finish a Lion because no one else will have him.

Some FO extra points are blockbuster trades or insightful articles on other sites. Others still can only be measured in microns.

Yep. Personally, I think that this is a bigger story, as it reveals some insight on what the NFL and the NFLPA have told us vs. what is actually true regarding HGH. I'm one of those cynical people who believes that there is a much higher rate of PED use in the NFL than what many fans would like to admit.

Here's the article: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/news/story?id=4938135

Sports talk radio and sports message boards are the killing fields of intellectual discourse.

If RL starts IQ testing it is all but done.

And the prop wins. Good one.

The article said that he started about thirty games, but he played in 120 games. So he was a rotational DE and probably a special teamer.

Is there a Hall of Fame for backups? Or something like the 'Todd Collins Award'?

by Hurt Bones :: Tue, 02/23/2010 - 7:49pm

or maybe the Todd Bouman Award?
11 seasons on a roster. Appeared in only 43 games with 6 starts, but 'dressed' for another 70 or so as 2nd or 3rd quarterback. Additionally in 29 of those 43 games he was just a holder and didn't take any snaps. Now that's what I call a backup.

He could be a bronze star player in All Pro football 2k8.

Back in the 90's Detroit had some decent teams. DeVries was supposed to play on the line with Robert Porscher, but he never seemed to make the leap some expected. I always thought he'd amount to more.

I tore my Achilles in September, surgery, 5 weeks in a non-walking cast, 3 weeks in a walking boot, rehab, etc. and I still have a long way to go.

My greatest fear is tearing the other one.

I did that with acl's.

where does his career won/loss record rank all time? from 99-09 the lions are 50-126, but he didn't play in all those games so i don't know what his record would actually be.

by andrew :: Wed, 02/24/2010 - 1:15am

He's like the Crash Davis of the NFL. Most tackles in the minor leagues....

I wish all the best to Whoever This Guy Is. I'm sure Whoever This Guy Is has been a valuable member of the Lions, and it would be nice to see the Lions welcome back Whoever This Guy Is. The Lions would probably be a higher quality franchise if they had more players of the caliber of Whoever This Guy Is.

Decent backup player, if he's healthy somebody will give him a shot.

by witless chum :: Thu, 02/25/2010 - 3:10pm

Yeah, he's seemed to have a knack for strip sacks over his career, too. Of course when it's the Lions, "decent backup player" means penciled in as a starter at DE, until he got hurt. The Lions will almost certainly take him back to compete with DeWayne White, Cliff Avril, Jason Hunter, Andre Fluellen and Turk McBride at the position.

Beat writers say it's to avoid paying a $400,000 roster bonus.

He meant the BC Lions.
