The 49ers have traded defensive tackle Kentwan Balmer to the Seahawks. Terms are undisclosed. Balmer, a first-round pick of the team in 2008, had previously gone AWOL from 49ers camp.

Is Kirk Cousins the best free-agent quarterback in recent memory? Should Trumaine Johnson or Malcolm Butler have gotten the larger contract? And what makes a free-agent contract good or bad, anyway?

What a bust. I'd be happy if my niners got a 6th rounder out of him.
Re: Seahawks Acquire Kentwan Balmer
What is it with flameout defensive tackles headed to the Seahawks? Colts fans feel your pain.
Re: Seahawks Acquire Kentwan Balmer
Why would a team trade a player in preseason to a team within its own division? Or has Balmer sucked that badly?
Re: Seahawks Acquire Kentwan Balmer
He's never proverbially "put it together", yet another in a long line of guys who appear to have the athletic ability but can't translate it to the field. The guy had 12 tackles last year, it's not like he appears to matter.
Re: Seahawks Acquire Kentwan Balmer
Well, when a bunch of teams decided to switch to the 3-4, it put a premium on 6-4, 310 lb guys and caused them to be overdrafted by a round or two. Balmer's one of many.
Re: Seahawks Acquire Kentwan Balmer
Let's just put it this way: In two years he hasn't gotten past third on the depth chart at left end. The two players ahead of him are... Isaac Sopoaga and Ray McDonald.
And he hasn't even come close to being second on the chart. He's a total nobody.
Re: Seahawks Acquire Kentwan Balmer
Meh. Waste of molecules as a football player. He's done nothing for two years and as for trading him within the division, he hasn't actually been in camp in order to learn the scheme. I'd rather have Ray Rice, Calais Campbell or DeSean Jackson, each of whom was available when the 49ers reached on Balmer. I can actually remember a couple of plays where he didn't look that bad but I literally mean one or two plays, in two years. Screw him.
Ricky Jean-Francois has looked pretty good, I'd rather he won the starting left end job over Balmer.
Re: Seahawks Acquire Kentwan Balmer
Coming into the draft I liked him more as a penetrating 4-3 under tackle (which he played to pretty good effect in college) than a 3-4 end. Not a bad risk for the Seahawks as a depth guy if the pick is low.
Re: Seahawks Acquire Kentwan Balmer
Pete Carroll has now traded low draft picks for other team's roster detritus three times (IIRC). Maybe Leon Washington will prove him right and return strongly from injury - just in time to demand a massive pay rise - every other team waits for the trash to get thrown out. We will have to wait and see how this one works out.
Re: Seahawks Acquire Kentwan Balmer
Early reports are a 6th rounder
Re: Seahawks Acquire Kentwan Balmer
Will never stop them from crying about the Super Bowl they lost.
That's why it always rains there.
Peace in our time
Rejoice Seattle Fans - We have closure.
You're wrong Theo, so very, very, wrong about this not stopping the tears, but i admit, i was surprised by this too.
The signing of Kentwan Balmer is compensation enough for having a referee cheat in a Super Bowl. It's not Bill Leavy's admission of cheating that's brought peace to our hearts, it's the signing of a back up 3-4 DE to play back-up DT.
Also, the ref cheating in the Super Bowl isn't the reason it rains - its actually due to the post 9-11 landscape. Its one of the many things that changed with America's hypnosis on that fateful day 9 years ago.
