Broncos Place Lloyd on Trading Block

KUBIAK has already offered a future third-round pick for him!

The Broncos appear to be looking to deal Brandon Lloyd at the deadline. A few teams have expressed interest in Lloyd according to the Denver Post report, including Tennessee and Carolina. However, local writers for both the Panthers and Titans have already second-guessed just how much interest their teams would have in Lloyd.

And hey, this would also be a good thread to discuss the other trades this week: Houston picking up Derrick Mason for a conditional seventh-rounder and Aaron Curry being dealt to Oakland for a seventh-rounder in 2012 and a conditional fifth-rounder in 2013.

Why wouldn't Texans offer a pick for Lloyd? A third round pick might be a little steep but AJs injury exposed the lack of WR depth on the Texans. Maybe this is overreacting while Andre is out the next week but we clearly need a better second option and Lloyd seems to have grown into a legit NFL WR.

Hell, the Redskins gave a 3rd for him back before he was good, so I don't see why a 3rd now is outrageous. Maybe slightly steep but not overly so. But I can imagine that passing offense being SCARY if Lloyd plays at even 2/3 the level he was playing at for McDaniels. I would enjoy seeing it happen very much!

They've already had him and let him go, and Jerry Angelo doesn't like admitting mistakes. Plus, the Bears have traded away a number of high draft picks in recent years (Cutler, Gaines Adams, etc.) and their pool of young talent is wearing thin.

If it weren't for the size of his contract, DeAngelo Williams would seem to me a good piece to deal for the Panthers. Sending him to Denver would reunite him with John Fox, and I was under the impression that Fox would have liked Denver to be able to sign him this offseason. I don't think Moreno is cutting it for them. I like DeAngelo and all, but the Panthers would be good with Jonathan Stewart and Mike Goodson, and they have really been in need of another WR weapon. I can't really see it happening with the contract they signed Williams to, though.

Carolina's offense would be very very fun to watch with Newton chucking it deep for Smith and Lloyd to go up and get.

Agreed, that sounds like a win-win trade, with both teams improving as a result. Therefore, it will never happen.

That would be a horrible idea. First, DeAngelo is a much better player than Lloyd. More importantly, DeAngelo is one of the most popular Panthers. Richardson has puked all over his fans quite enough, thank you very much. Richardson is smart enough to realize he has a lot of work to do to rebuild the fanbase.

Not only that, but I apparently waaaaaay overvalued Brandon Lloyd. I didn't realize Denver was pretty much willing to give him away.

Who would be available? And I bet Angelo is starting to feel leery of trading picks for players at this point, with so many trades not panning out.

I feel like OL is one of the few positions that nobody really likes to get rid of around the trade deadline. Maybe nobody wants to destroy whatever chemistry that has already developed, or don't think new chemistry can be developed at this point in the season.

How far has Aaron Curry's value fallen?? He was THE top prospect when he came out, it was only because of his position that he didn't go higher than #4. Now he's a 7th rounder... I always like teams who deal for failed draft picks - as long as it's only after one failure. It could be just poor coaching or a bad scheme that has lead to that failure. If he gets cut by the Raiders too, then yeah he's toast.

Not a seahawks fan, but the gist of it is that he has no instincts for the position. He's very fast, very athletic, and that masked his lack of intuition in college, but in the NFL, he just hasn't been able to take that step and use his talents instinctively.

A friend of mine, who happens to be a Seahawks fan, told me that Curry is pretty much a poor man's LaVar Arrington. From what I've heard, I guess it could make sense. Is that true?

Aaron Curry was horrible in coverage, bad in run support, bad in gap assignment and poor at rushing the quarterback. Teams would often see what side of the field he was on and purposely run at him because he was such a liability.

He has strong instincts and his athleticism was incredible, but he has virtually no football smarts and appears largely to be uncoachable. His success in college was essentially: go kill the QB on teams with a bad line.

Maybe the Raiders can make something of him. My suspicion is that he's worthless as a football player.

As a football fan that has been living in Carolina since the first year of the team, and really started paying attention to football the year Fox arrived in Charlotte, I can say that putting Lloyd on the trading block makes PERFECT sense. Think about it:
a) Fox still isn't convinced that the forward pass is entirely legal;
b) It's pretty obvious that Fox doesn't want Tebow to succeed, as he is clearly hesitant to play him;
c) Getting rid of Lloyd will only force the Broncos to run more;
and d) Lloyd isn't Jake Delhomme, the only veteran he has ever shown true loyalty to.

Lloyd loves Kyle Orton and has a history of causing problems (and not performing) when he's unhappy.

Can anyone point to evidence to back this up? I hear it all the time, but I've never actually seen support for it. On the other hand, there must be some reason teams are always trying to get rid of him. It's really depressing to me (as a Bears fan) that he was obviously their best receiver in 2008 and would be obviously their best receiver now, and we let him go for nothing because of some vague notion that he's a malcontent.

Nah, it's silly.

Lloyd gives good quote and expresses opinions, but isn't the worst influence in the world. I'm pretty sure it's just that the guy is wanting to get a good contract next year, isn't seeing a lot of looks this year, doesn't want to be seen as a one-year-wonder, and that's basically it.

I don't think he's a good fit for Tebow. Lloyd's great at positioning himself within a route, but he sucks at YAC, his blocking isn't anything special, and I'm not sure he'd be a great improviser for longer plays. Decker and the two Thomas's are good for Tebow because they have speed, big bodies, and willingness to block. Denver's moving to a more physical receiving group.

I would like to see the Browns make a play for him. 6th rounder 2012 and condition 7th rounder 2013, Browns can throw in Robiskie too. He is a great blocking WR, practices hard, and is a quick learner in the play book, and has no other NFL level skill that one can see. Tebow and Fox like to run, so he may be a good fit in Denver.

Browns are desperate for WR help and Llyod is veteran and could help McCoy and Little develop. Cribbs isn't a WR (sweet returner, jack of all trades, bubble screen guy) and MoMass is nothing more than decent 3rd or 4th WR on any other team. Browns for a couple of low round picks and Brian Robiskie would be great for the Browns.

Now issue is new contract. Browns can't sign him to big deal as they suck (and will continue to suck) and he doesn't deserve huge money. Something like, 3 to 3.5 mil a year would be acceptable. I am guessing Llyod thinks he deserves 7 mil ayear. He doesn't.

I am guessing that Denver keeps him around for Tebow. This talk of losers Thomas and Royal coming back and affected Llyod and Decker playing time is a bit ridiculous as both Decker and Llyod are legit players and Royal and Thomas are not very good.

I don't think anyone can judge whether Thomas is a good receiver or not, since he has been injured almost the entire time he's been in Denver. The Broncos are looking to move Lloyd because his contract is up after this season, he's likely to be too expensive ( and too old ) to re-sign, and at this point he's almost a luxury for a team where the passing offense looks to return to the 1960's era. I also think most teams understand this, and likely won't offer much at all.
The shipping off of Curry reminds me once again that reading 'informed analysis' of the draft, whether on ESPN or FO, is really meaningless, because until these guys suit up and play for a few years, we have no idea how they'll turn out. It's all just guessing, much like the draft, itself.

I'm tempted to go back and grade Curry through today's raiders game. He looked pretty solid to me. We'll see how it breaks down, but so far I'd say he was worth the trade.

I'd like to see more intelligence on the football outsiders discussion boards. This is supposed to be a place for smarter fans. All this talk of sabotaging Tebow, setting him up for failure, positioning themselves for a run at Luck, and Fox hating the passing game, it's all idiocy.
