Jets Cut Jerricho Cotchery; Might Sign Derrick Mason

The linked article was written before the move actually happened, but now it has happened. Seems like an odd move to me. Cotchery struggled last year with his worst DVOA, -23.1%, but he also had a groin injury and a herniated disc. He's eight years younger than Mason, he has experience playing with the quarterback that Mason does not, and he had a better DVOA than Mason just two short years ago.

I think part of it is a salary move and part of it is his back is worse than they are letting on.

Can anything about shuffling washed-up 4th receivers be considered "odd?" Irrelevant seems more appropriate a description.

A sad day for Jet fans. I've been a big fan of Cotchery's since they stole him in the 4th round in 2004. Always played big against New England - wouldn't shock me to see Bellichick grab him, or San Diego - he was Rivers' #1 receiver in college.

When did Dan Snyder buy the Jets?

I know Snyder's an easy target and all, but I don't get the reference here. Unless you're going back a decade plus to the Deion Sanders signings, the Redskins have at least signed younger free agents (mainly because they had so many holes to fill from poor drafts and poorer trades)

Heard that Cotchery asked for his release.

Well, for all the noise they've been making in free agency, I think it's pretty clear that the Jets offense is going to be worse than last year.

What noise? They signed Burris and re-signed a few players from last year (Holmes, Cromartie, Pool)

And as of Friday morning, they have not signed Mason.

I meant literally noise...or maybe print, depending on the medium. Not to be confused with meaningful transactions.

I don't think the Jets are better with Plax and mason than they were with Edwards, Cotchery & Smith.

by chemical burn :: Fri, 08/05/2011 - 10:42pm

Realistically, they are worse.

Note: Apparently, I jumped the gun here. Derrick Mason is considering signing with the Jets, but has not done so yet.

According to your new writer Mr. Tuccitto, there is no question that Plax (34-years-old, including a 2 year prison bid) and Mason (37) > Braylon (28) & Cotchery (29).

I wonder what universe he is living in.

The Steelers are looking at Cotchery.
