Browns Re-Sign D'Qwell Jackson

Reported terms: five years, $42.5 million, with $19 million in guaranteed money.

Obviously Jackson had a good season and was a terrific story in winning comeback player of the year, but my gut instinct says that's a lot of money for someone who played six games in the two years prior to 2011.

He's good when healthy. That's better than 90% of the rest of the team.

Tackling machines on bad defenses - do we even know if these guys tend to be any good?

He's for real in my opinion.
He's one of the few bright spots on a bad team.

Ok - haven't seen him in action for years.

Clearly an actually good player is going to make a lot of tackles at MLB for a bad defense, but my point was if mediocre MLBs would do as well. I.e. tackling on bad defenses is more about opportunity than abillity?

Jerod Mayo, DeMeco Ryans, Jonathan Vilma, Jon Beason and perhaps Barret Ruud, Cato June and D.J. Williams qualify for this study as well.

Yes I know what you mean, I what I meant to say was that he's a good player - not a guy who 'benefits' from being on a bad team.

Vilma: excellent player in the right system, but struggled when used in a role unsuited to his talents.

Ryans: excellent player prior to injury, but has not yet come all the way back and may never do so.

Eesh. That is an awful lot of money for an injury-prone ILB going into his age 29 season. DeMeco Ryans was three years younger and with a less troubling injury history when he signed a similar contract in 2010, and even that now looks like a horrible move for the team.

Did he win the CPOTY award? I thought it went to Plaxico or somebody else. I think PFT keeps saying something like the "most deserving CPOTY nominee, Jackson" or something like that.

Matt Stafford won according to wikipedia.

Ouch. Hope that's just an in-joke and not an actual error. Rough day for the guys. Aaron is over on 4 Downs apologizing for them not having updated draft info.

Details of the contract are now available here. Doesn't look like a lot of obvious back-loaded funny money, although the team can save meaningful cap room by releasing him any time from 2014 onwards. He'll earn $16.8m over the first two seasons and $23.5m over the first three.

I think it's too much money, but I guess time will tell.

Hard to say if he's worth it because I am not a Browns fan. But he was downright fantastic against the Niners this year.
