Decisions, Decisions

It's always fun to scrutinize and second-guess every decision a head coach makes during the course of a game, but this article makes the job sound, well, kinda complicated. You mean coaches just don't show up on Sunday, slap on a headset (or not, if you're Marty Schottenheimer) and start calling plays? What?

Kiffin named Raiders Head Coach

I've already put one XP up with the Raiders picking a head coach. I'm not doing three.

And poor Monte Kiffin!

And, actually, I wonder if the Raiders were insistent on getting a USC assistant by hook or crook. Maybe the towel guy would've got the job if enough people had turned it down.

Parcells Not Coming Back to Dallas

From the AP: "Bill Parcells retired from coaching Monday, leaving the Dallas Cowboys after four seasons and ending a stellar career that featured three Super Bowl appearances and two championships." Maybe Ron Rivera will get a head-coaching job this year after all.

MMQB: Pulling for Peyton

My favorite quote from today's MMQB: "It finally happened. After a full season of traveling ... I finally got my little tube of toothpaste and my 99-cent can of shaving cream hijacked by Homeland Security." Oddly, King doesn't mention TSA also confiscated his Aquafina water bottle with the secret compartment. Oh, and he also writes about the weekend's championship games.

Tomlin Named Steelers' Head Coach

Mike Tomlin, Minnesota's 34-year-old defensive coordinator, will be named the new head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers this weekend, SI.com's Michael Silver has learned. Silver wrote that the announcement would come late Saturday or early Sunday. Considered a future front-runner for a coaching job since his days as Tampa Bay's secondary coach, Tomlin beat out Pittsburgh assistant head coach Russ Grimm and Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Ron Rivera for the job.

Write Your Own Story

As per the request of about 10 people in the AFC Championship Game Preview Thread, Patrick Hruby's gorgeous piece on the media buildup to this game is probably the best thing you will read on Page 2 for months that has nothing to do with D.J. Gallo.

Dolphins Hire Cam Cameron as Head Coach

Well, if you were looking for reasons why the 2007 Chargers might fizzle, here's one -- they need a new offensive coordinator after Miami hired Cam Cameron to take over as head coach. He takes over an offense with a talented young running back... and... well, good luck with that whole thing there, Cam.

Samardzija Giving Up Football

Pretty big draft news here. Jeff Samardzija has told the Chicago Cubs that he will pitch full-time rather than enter the NFL draft as a wide receiver. I e-mailed Kevin Goldstein, the prospect guru over at BP, and he sent me the official Cubs press release. Samardzija has signed a five-year major league contract with two club option years. Samardzija has first-round talent in both sports, and only fell to the fifth-round of the baseball draft because of worries he would go to the NFL.
