Wide Open Spaces

Does anybody else wonder how the Redskins spend wads of cash in free agency only to basically do it again twelve months later and still stay under the salary cap? This article offers some insight.

MMQB: Hail to the Commish

Peter King thinks Paul Tagliabue deserves to be in the Hall of Fame when it's all said and done, and he also has some thoughts on the first weekend of free agency.

FO NCAA Tournament Pool

We've set up a Yahoo! NCAA bracket pool for FO readers. I came in second in the pool two years ago, which shows just how little our fanbase knows about college basketball. No prize, other than bragging rights. If this group fills up, I'll start another one. Group ID: 63739. Password: dvoa.

Vikings Sign All-Pro Hutchinson to Offer Sheet

Looks like Seattle will be losing All-Pro guard Steve Hutchinson. The Seahawks had placed the transition tag on Hutchinson, giving them the right to match any contract offers Hutchinson signed elsewhere. Minnesota is doing everything in their power to make sure Seattle can't match this deal, by including $16 million in guaranteed money in the deal and, according to ProFootballTalk.com, a 2006 cap hit of over $13 million.

Ravens Sign Mike Anderson

With Chester Taylor inking a deal with the Vikings, the Ravens sign Mike Anderson to a four-year contract thought to be worth roughly $8 million (with a $2 million bonus). And Jamal Lewis is still unemployed. (free registration/bugmenot required)

Update: Check that. Jamal Lewis is no longer unemployed -- he just signed a three-year deal with the Ravens.

James Leaving Colts for Cards

Edgerrin James is now an Arizona Cardinal, signing a four-year, $30 million deal. According to the AP, "James will receive $11.5 million in bonus money, making his first year compensation $14.75 million, according to his agent, Drew Rosenhaus. The remaining $15.25 million will be paid out over the final three years of the deal."

Broncos Re-sign Dayne, Who Might Start in 2006

This is it, isn't it? The ultimate test of Mike Shanahan's genius. How good is his offensive line scheme? Can he build a successful running game around a back that can't hit a hole unless it is directly in front of him? If Ron Dayne can gain 1000+ yards in Shanahan's system, Denver should just stop drafting or signing running backs altogether. I'd suggest a weekly radio contest where the 7th caller gets to be the starting tailback that week.

Browns Add LeCharles Bentley, Kevin Shaffer

Wow. I can't remember a team ever improving its offensive line in one fell swoop like the Cleveland Browns just have, adding, in my opinion, the best center and the best tackle available in free agency, LeCharles Bentley and Kevin Shaffer.

Note: All those reports about Bentley joining the Eagles were premature. Is it just me, or does it seem like every time the entire football media gets a story like this wrong, Len Pasquarelli is the one who ends up getting it right?

Brees Vows to Come Back 'Better Than Ever'

Drew Brees angry. Drew Brees no like A.J. Smith. From the article: "If I leave and go somewhere else and be very successful like I plan on doing, they have a lot to lose," Brees added. "I guess in a way, I've laid my butt on the line for them a lot in the last five years. There have been ups and downs, and I laid my butt on the line. I wish there was somebody there who would lay their butt on the line for me, besides the head coach and the players ... Did A.J. draft me? No. Did A.J. draft Philip? Enough said."
