You know how linebacker has been a New York Giants weakness for years? They're finally doing something about it.

Despite speculation the Jacksonville Jaguars might make a change at quarterback this offseason, the signed incumbent Blake Bortles to a contract extension that will last through 2020.
Bortles was going into the last year of his contract and due $19 million in 2018. Terms of the new deal were not disclosed, but in all likelihood it will guarantee Bortles more money over the time of the deal while lowering his cap hit this season.

The Colts have quickly found a new head coach after the Josh McDaniels debacle, agreeing to terms with Philadelphia offensive coordinator Frank Reich. What I find interesting here is that Eagles QB coach John DeFilippo agreed to leave to become offensive coordinator in Minnesota just two days ago, even though he knew Reich was interviewing in Indianapolis. I wonder why he didn't wait a couple days to see if the Eagles' OC position might be opening up.

The 49ers and Jimmy Garoppolo have agreed to a five-year, $137.5 million contract, source says. The biggest deal in NFL history on a average-per-year basis, until Kirk Cousins signs his next contract. In case you were wondering why Handsome Jimmy G. did not want to stay in New England as Tom Brady's backup for the $17-$18 million they allegedly offered him in a contract extension, this is why.

Longtime readers will remember that I started at FO right around the Eagles-Patriots Super Bowl in 2005, writing ruminations about Philly Fans and talking about the values of fandom I would impart to my toddler son. (Click to read more.)

Is Kirk Cousins the best free-agent quarterback in recent memory? Should Trumaine Johnson or Malcolm Butler have gotten the larger contract? And what makes a free-agent contract good or bad, anyway?
