Jones Gifted on Field, Troubled off It

By now, you've read hundreds of rumors, short blog posts, and discussion thread comments about Pac-Man Jones. But here's something a bit more substantial about Jones, his background, and the troubling question of why he acts the way he acts. I understand the idea of "keeping it real" and the fact that Jones's desire to stay true to his childhood friends puts him in bad situations.

Browns Sign Jamal Lewis

In 2004, the 32nd-ranked offensive line in the league, Miami, drafted Ronnie Brown. They also added Hudson Houck. The 31st-ranked team, the 49ers, picked up Frank Gore. Miami's rush offense went up to 14th in the league; San Francisco stayed at 30.

After the 2005 season, the 32nd-ranked offensive line in the league, Arizona, signed Edgerrin James in free agency. The 31st-ranked team, the Vikings, added Chester Taylor. They ended up with the 29th and 23rd best rushing attacks in the league in 2006, respectively.

Redskins Target Broncos' Bly

Last week, the Lions traded Dre' Bly to the Broncos for Tatum Bell and George Foster. Bly, who has a year remaining on his current deal, wanted to go to the Redskins, in part, because owner Daniel Snyder was prepared to give him a new contract. Washington is still in the Bly business, but the article mentions another potential trade that seems too good to be true: Denver offered linebacker Al Wilson, the 21st-overall pick, a third-round pick, and possibly a second-round pick, for Washington's sixth-overall pick.

Daniel Graham Signs With Broncos

The competition between the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks for the services of former New England Patriots tight end Daniel Graham is over, and the Seahawks blinked first. Denver has signed the five-year veteran and former unrestricted free agent to a five-year, $30 million deal with $15 million in guaranteed money, according to Scout.com's Adam Caplan.

Dolphins Give Joey Porter $32 Million

The Miami Dolphins have signed former Steelers outside linebacker Joey Porter to a five-year, $32 million deal, including $20 million in guarantees. The three-time Pro Bowler will play opposite Jason Taylor in Miami's 3-4 defense. With Porter gone, the Steelers have very little depth at linebacker, which explains why Tully Banta-Cain will visit Pittsburgh tomorrow.

UPDATE: Check that, Banta-Cain has signed with the 49ers.

Thomas Jones Traded to Jets

Thomas Jones has been traded from the Bears to the Jets. The Jets gave up an early second-round pick (which they previously acquired from the Redskins) for the Bears' second-round pick and Jones.

Personally, I love this move for the Jets. Jones will be an instant starter, and I think the price they gave up for him was paltry. The only problem, of course, is that Jones wants a new contract, but assuming his demands aren't outrageous, I think the Jets made a nice move.
