Doubting Thomas

Remember when our early numbers said Fred Thomas was a good corner back? Well, we figured out why.

MMQB: Notes from Indy

Peter King was in Indianapolis for four days and here are his post-Combine draft story lines: Calvin Johnson and Joe Thomas are dreamy; the Cleveland Browns will have a tough decision with their No. 3 pick; and free agency is going to be insane.

Jared Zabransky - The New Dr. Z

It may have done so for much of the football-watching world, but quarterback Jared Zabransky of Boise State isn't about to let one game define him. Although it was in one of the most thrilling postseason games ever in any sport, Zabransky's MVP performance in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl is not all there is to the 6'2, 219-pound quarterback. For Zabransky, it's really about a skillset of intangibles that extend far beyond the measurables.

KC DE Allen Requests Move

Chiefs defensive end Jared Allen is requesting a trade after the team failed to offer the 24-year-old defensive end a long-term contract. Allen, a restricted free agent, will be tendered a contract for this upcoming season but will be an unrestricted free agent next year. For some reason, Allen talks about wanting to end his career in Kansas City; this is already on his mind at 24. The piece also notes that Allen led the league in 2006 with six fumble recoveries.

Oh, and first person to make Allen-to-the-Bengals jokes loses the thread.

Michael Allan and the Sleeper Hold

An article I wrote for Scout.com yesterday from about Whitworth TE Michael Allan, the only Division III player invited to the Combine this year. He really helped himself with his workouts yesterday - even the scouts and analysts who were high on him already are newly impressed. Mike Mayock went out of his way to mention Allan in his press conference. It's thought that he raised himself up one or two rounds from late second-day status yesterday in the RCA Dome alone.

Broncos RB Damien Nash Dead at 24

What kind of bad sign is floating over this franchise? Damien Nash, the third-string running back in Denver, passed away at the age of 24 after collapsing during a charity basketball game in St. Louis -- a charity basketball game for a heart transplant charity named after his brother Derris, himself a recent transplant recipient. Awful news.

Corey Dillon to Call it Quits

Corey Dillon tells Mike Reiss of the Boston Globe that he will ask the Patriots to release him and then retire. (Well, probably... he does say he is "going to leave the window open, but it's very slim.") Dillon says that he's retiring for much the same reason as Tiki Barber: his body has taken a pounding, and he wants to be able to walk around comfortably in 10 years. He doesn't quite go out on top like Barber does, but we're spared an agonizing 3.2 yards per carry season with the 2009 Detroit Lions or some such thing.

Raiders Cut Ties With QB Brooks

This is a good start, I guess. With Andrew Walter and Marques Tuiasosopo now the only two quarterbacks on the roster, I think JaMarcus Russell might be in the Raiders' future. Assuming, of course, they don't trade the first-overall pick for David Carr or something.

Go to the Head of the Draft

Every year, in the weeks leading up to the Combine, we read about NFL hopefuls training for months at "combine camps" honing their 40-yard dash, three-cone drill and vertical jump (you know, all the tests that don't correlate well with NFL success). Ken Herock also preps college players with NFL aspirations, but instead of the physical, he focuses on how to sell oneself in the interview process. Basically, less swagger, more polish. Surprisingly, Maurice Clarett, who took the class in 2005, was one of Herock's worst students:

Billick Gets Four-Year Extension

WBAL in Baltimore reports that Brian Billick's received a four year extension, a story confirmed by the Ravens on their website. Terms were not disclosed.

"I'm old school that way," Billick said at the time. "I don't think details of my contract, or anyone's contract for that matter, should be public. My contract is my business and Steve's [Bisciotti, Ravens owner]. I understand the public nature of the business, but not everything needs to be public."

I fully agree. You don't even want to know how much I got paid for putting up this Extra Point.
