Reshaping of Falcons Might Be a Game Away

How would you fix the Atlanta Falcons? Ignore Number Seven for the time being, because it isn't like he's the only problem on this team. Do you cut Warrick Dunn to save $3.25 million on the cap, and make Jerious Norwood your starting running back? Do you pick up an actual real-life cornerback, or hope Jimmy Williams can move into the starting lineup in his second year? What do you do about all the injury-prone stars like Ed Hartwell and John Abraham? Notice, by the way, that this position-by-position look at the Falcons is missing one position: wide receiver.

Archuleta Sounds Off

This whole Adam Archuleta thing is just weird. First, the Redskins recruit him this off-season like he's Jesus Shuttlesworth and then, midway through the regular season, Archuleta's only playing special teams. Washington's personnel practices aside, this probably doesn't help assistant head coach-defense Gregg Williams' chances of landing a head coaching job anytime soon. Dungy Defends Beleaguered Meeks

It looks like Colts' defensive coordinator Ron Meeks has at least one supporter in Indianapolis and it's the head coach. Tony Dungy says he hasn't lost confidence in Meeks: "Last year we were No. 2 in scoring defense and doing a lot of good things. What's different? Nothing's different other than last year we lost two (games) and this we've lost four.'' If by "nothing" Dungy mean "a lot of stuff," then I agree. The Colts were 8th in defensive DVOA in 2005 (4th against the pass, 17th against the run) and this year they rank 26th (19th against the pass, 31st against the run).

Taylor: Honoring LB Sends Wrong Message

Add Jason Taylor's name to the list of people who think Shawne Merriman shouldn't be eligible for any end-of-year accolades since he was suspended for violating the league's substance-abuse policy. Here's what Taylor said yesterday: "You really shouldn't be able to fail a test like that and play in this league, to begin with... To make the Pro Bowl and all the other awards, I think you're walking a fine line of sending the wrong message." Somewhere Barry Bonds is wondering why he didn't play professional football.

Cowher Hints at Faster Decision on Status

In his Tuesday press conference, Bill Cowher said he will discuss his future coaching plans next week. Now that the postseason is no longer an issue, the talk among fans and media is who will replace Cowher if he chooses to retire. There has also been some discussion locally that the Steelers' job is one of the most sought after in professional sports and I wonder if outside observers agree. And if so, does that put previously thought untouchable coaches in play for the position? Assuming, of course, Cowher actually calls it quits.

Coughlin Demotes Offensive Coordinator

As I told Mike Tanier after reading his most recent FOX Blog entry, "The Worst Coach of 2006", he may want to give Tom Coughlin more consideration. The Giants' head coach has stripped offensive coordinator John Hufnagel of his play-calling responsibilities before the final game of the season, though he says he's been pondering the move for weeks.
