NFL Lowdown: Week 2

The game previews are up, this time without a picture of me looking like grown-up Hadji from Johnny Quest. That is value added!

Re: Lions-49ers preview, the mental image of Jim Schwartz and Jim Harbaugh at a dinner party together, coming to blows after a handshake, knocking over several glasses of wine and making silverware fly everywhere, while the other guests look on in horror, made me laugh out loud for several seconds.

That being said, it looks like the two coaches have put the incident behind them, and I hope it stays that way, because last year's kerfluffle overshadowed what was a really good,close game between the two squads.

Mike, in your breakdown of Cam vs RG3, would you not classify Tim Tebow and Sam Bradford as "deceptively fast"? I think they are. They are also "real hard workers" and "a fan favorite."

by Mike Tanier :: Fri, 09/14/2012 - 9:58am

I figured those were all givens :)

All joking aside, I want to let you know that I'm very happy to see you writing somewhere every week, in your usual humorous style. Please, keep up the great work. FO, thanks for continuing to allow Mike to link to his posts here.

I greatly enjoyed the Scooby-Doo Kolb remark

Bart Scott declines to crap on his co-attendee at a charity event and gives innocuous comment....news at 11! Bit of reach there, Mikey. I really liked the Newton/RGIII and Manning/Chuck Berry bits though. Peyton B. Goode?

Thanks for not poking fun at Tannehill yet. Let's wait until he truly deserves it.

I take it these are no longer in order of interest, with Atlanta-Denver at the bottom...

(All times Eastern; all Sunday games ranked by quality of matchup.)

The key word is Sunday. ;)

Ahhhhh! Good catch.

What is a "floppy disk"?

by Ryan D. :: Fri, 09/14/2012 - 11:29am

Seriously? You must be under 25, or my sarcasm detector must be broken.

by MJK :: Fri, 09/14/2012 - 4:06pm

Yes, check your sarcasm detector. I'm 34. And have a closet full of floppy disks that modern computers can't read anymore but that I can't possibly throw away. (That's my old data!)

by Ryan D. :: Fri, 09/14/2012 - 4:19pm

Shit. I need new batteries for my sarcasm detector already? :grumble:

It's something old guys get in their lower back.

by Will Allen :: Fri, 09/14/2012 - 11:30am

Sadly, I concur with the Indy/Minny pick. Longneck is in Denver, and the Vikings still won't beat the Colts. Oh, well, they'll have another chance in 2016.

by justanothersteve :: Fri, 09/14/2012 - 12:20pm

You realize that if they do beat the Colts and Detroit loses to SF, the Vikings will be alone in first place of the NFC Central?

by Will Allen :: Fri, 09/14/2012 - 12:24pm

Oh, sure, go and ruin my Sunday afternoon! Whatta'ya' gonna do next; tell me that the lotto ticket I lost last week had five numbers right?

by Ryan D. :: Fri, 09/14/2012 - 12:38pm

If the Bucs win on Sunday, they will be 2-0, and tied for first place in the NFC Central.

Are you guys having a time-warped conversation from 1998?

"Prediction: Patriots 27, Cardinals 13"

Really? You think the Cardinals don't lose by 15 or more in an early road game on the East coast against probably the best team in the league who notoriously love running up the score? I'm not sure I could get behind the Cardinals at +21, never mind +15.

by Dean :: Fri, 09/14/2012 - 4:30pm

Wasn't there just an XP this offseason about how maybe the travelling east bit is a fallacy? Or am I thinking of something else?

by dmstorm22 :: Fri, 09/14/2012 - 9:25pm

The Patriots ever since their SpyGate vengeance wore off around the Baltimore miracle in 2007 have been awful at covering lines greater than 10. There were some exceptions (late in the 2010 season) but they aren't a great play when they are favorites of more than 10 points.

Per Walter Football, the Patriots with Brady as QB are 7-16 ATS as home favorites of at least 9 points. That number goes down when the line goes over 12.

They usually blow out teams when we don't really expect them to destroy teams, again with the exception of late in the 2010 season.

by Mr Shush :: Sat, 09/15/2012 - 6:21am

Interesting. I sort of feel like this Cardinals team would be in danger of losing by more than two scores in Buffalo, never mind Foxborough, but maybe I'm wrong.

by Ryan D. :: Sun, 09/16/2012 - 5:18pm

How would you feel about betting on Arizona to win outright?

by Mr Shush :: Sun, 09/16/2012 - 7:36pm

Well, I guess at least I can place an effective commenter's kiss of death. Um, damn. I saw only the last few minutes - what the hell happened? Have the Cardinals somehow mysteriously produced an elite defense? Did Brady have one of his inexplicable crapfest games?

Still, anything that improves the Texans' chances of home field advantage is ok by me.

I cant help but feel that Tanier is projecting his feels as a parent of a teenager in that jets piece :p

by countertorque :: Fri, 09/14/2012 - 8:55pm

I like your method of listing the spread and calling the exact score to show your confidence level in which way to bet.

But, of course you're setting yourself up for a scolding from TMQ.

Fun article.

Absolutely love the homeopathy comment on the Eagles' running game. ALthough it is somewhat innacurate, since if we use good instruments, we can actually detect a Philadelphia running game.
